Festus Odimegwu, Chairman, NPC

Abimbola Akosile

The Chairman, National Population Commission (NPC), Mr. Festus Odimegwu, has said the planned 2016 would create five million jobs for Nigerians, going by the commission’s detailed strategy and action plan, which would span five years of implementation.

Odimegwu revealed this during a meeting with Business Editors in Abuja, where he also said the process would take place across the 200,000 localities in Nigeria.

According to him, the commission would establish a national vital registration infrastructure to allow people take data for births and deaths.

The former industrialist, who revealed that the NPC would hire and train one million enumerators, who would work on gathering credible and accurate data to determine Nigeria’s actual population size, underlined the need for the country to generate efficient and accurate data to ensure proper and efficient development planning.

Odimegwu, who stressed the importance of demographic statistics as a basic pre-requisite for planning in the country, spoke of the NPC's plan to conduct a biometric national census by 2016 using digital imagery and nationwide surveys. He urged Nigerians embrace the use of data in every facet of planning, especially concerning development indicators.

The process, according to him, would gulp a sum of N576 billion, half of which would be raised from the federal government, while the remaining 50 per cent would be generated from nine other sources including states and local governments.

Insisting that nobody could actually state the accurate figure of Nigeria's actual population size, Odimegwu also dispelled the popular notion that citizens would be better captured in any census if they travel to their states of origin or homelands.

Responding to inquiries, he affirmed that Nigerians would be adequately captured wherever they reside, and the data would also reflect ethnicity and religion of each individual, "in response to the yearnings of Nigerians.”

According to him, the commission has formulated a strategy and detailed action plan, which would span five years of implementation, at the end of which a comprehensive, credible and accurate database of all Nigerians, both within the country and in the Diaspora, would have been generated for development planning to spur economic growth.

"You cannot coordinate the economy without data. You cannot plan education or agriculture or build roads without data. There is nothing you can do in a modern society without data. We need planning to improve the welfare of all Nigerians from all corners.

"Nobody knows the actual population of Nigeria. The current statistics are guesstimates. Nigerians want to know the actual population in terms of religion and ethnicity. We must consider religion and ethnicity. Any demographic characterisation of any Nigerians without both issues is incomplete.

Odimegwu stressed that it was time to focus on the governance issues of managing the population.

He called for a sustained fight against corruption and the demise of the social malaise. He added that when the quality of the population increases through education, then the quantity would reduce.

Oops! This move will definitely be prepared to contend with a plethora of obstructions and roadblocks because it'll reveal too many things that may threaten the foundations of this country Nigeria. This country has lived on too many lies over the decades. Including ethinicity and religion will help us know who need more or less.

I reckon that for us to conduct a reliable census, we should not spend more than 2 days.

A 2 day dusk -dawn curfew with say 1 million enumerators will help achieve that.

But to allow free movement of people and census process stretch for weeks creates discrepancies and not cost effective.

During the last census, those data were supposed to be captured as well, but the Northern leaders threatened OBJ with a boycott of the exercise, and the gutless contractors and carpet-baggers that masquerade as SE leaders just caved in. It is a crime that just about eveything in Nigeria is doled out on the basis of state of origin and ethnic and religious classification, yet people will object to determining the true numbers of those classes. Just a fraud of a nation.

Sometimes I feel that Nigeria don't like good things that is why they don't want to support a good idea like this.

This is why we need jonathan to win in 2015 so he can give the National population commission the same autonomy devoid of government corrupting influence It gave to INEC which has improved election conduct in the Nation.
So they will be able to give a true estimate of the population of this country devoid of tribal, ethnic or religious bias

Igbos beating their hairy chests again lmao!!!!!

Hausas are way more than Igbos - Fact !!!

Yorubas are way more than Igbos - Fact

Igbos are way more than Fulanis - Fact

But Igbos more than Hausas or Yorubas? buahahahahahahahahahahahhahaha...

You know what? let it come on.

But then, Igbos in Lagos will only count as Igbos population. but I will prefer to shut these tribal nut jobs up once and for all by allowing Igbos in Lagos to count as "Igbo Lagosians"...

Hausas have the biggest number in Nigeria and I don't think anyone can dispute that with chest beatings..

But the south is way more than the North no ffucking doubt!! but Hausas dominate the North while Yorubas dominate the south by a lesser percentage. These demographies may have changed but Idoubt it has by more than 2%

Jonathan is a reactionists! Jonathan is doing this because he knows Ibo people like it when you make them believe they are being marginalized. Things like this appeal to Ibos emotion. Jonathan must let them feel like they are more than everybody else so they can come out in large number to vote for him. If Jonathan wins the 2015 election, the census count won't go the way they let the Ibos believe it would go.

It is one of the divisive tactics used by Jonathan around the country.

By Hausa, you mean Hausa-Fulani ?

They are sometimes usually merged as one. Buhari for example is not a Hausa man but a Fulani man.

Hausa population alone is not more than the yoruba or igbo population. I am sure of that

I doubt you know the people that will count as Hausas during census. Remove Fulanis, Hausas are the biggest in Nigeria followed by Yorubas then Igbos..

If every chest beating will count as a citizen, then Igbos make 85% of world population..

Who are those that will count as Hausas during census?

How many states of the 19 northern states has majority Hausa population?

It is shocking, but my brother the hausas are not in the majority in Nigeria, dont be deceived by the wide spread usage of Hausa language in the north.

The Hausa (autonyms for singular: Bahaushe; plural Hausawa and general: Hausa/Haoussa; exonyms being Ausa, Mgbakpa, Kado, Al-Takari and Abakwariga) are one of the largest ethnic groups in West Africa. They live primarily in the Sahelian and Sudanian areas of northern Nigeria and southeastern Niger, with significant numbers also living in parts of Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Chad, Togo, Ghana,[2] and Sudan. The Hausa are a minority in every country they reside in except Niger, where they constitute the majority. Predominantly Hausa communities are scattered throughout West Africa and on the traditional Hajj route across the Sahara Desert, especially around the town of Agadez. A few Hausa have also moved to large coastal cities in the region such as Lagos and Cotonou, as well as to parts of North Africa such as Libya. Most Hausa, however, live in small villages or towns in West Africa, where they grow crops, raise livestock including cattle and engage in trade. They speak the Hausa language, an Afro-Asiatic language of the Chadic group.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hausa_people

In Nigeria, the Fulani are often categorized with the Hausa as a conglomerated ethnic group Hausa-Fulani. Following the Fulani War, their histories in the region have been largely intertwined. Outside Nigeria, the two groups are usually considered distinct and are different as a matter of fact.

The Fulani were the first group of people in West Africa to convert to Islam through jihads, or holy wars, and were able to take over much of the Sahel region of West Africa and establish themselves not only as a religious group but also as a political and economical force.

In the 9th century they may have been involved in the formation of a state with its capital at Takrur which is suggested to have had influx of Fulani migrating from the east and settling in the Senegal valley[5][6] although John Donnelly Fage suggests that Takrur was formed through the interaction of Berbers from the Sahara and "Negro agricultural peoples" who were "essentially Serer
