Incredible news broke on Thursday afternoon: new West Brom striker Nicolas Anelka has walked out of West Brom’s training, and the Frenchman has announced his retirement from professional football.
The story is an embarrassment for West Brom after the club had repeatedly defended signing the bad-boy Frenchman in recent weeks, with Albion manager Steve Clarke going as far as to lambaste journalists who painted Anelka out to be a bad apple only last week.
Just seven days ago WBA boss Clarke told a packed room of press:
Anelka wanted to come back to England to play. I think he felt he still had enough in his body to produce in the Premier League, and luckily for him I agreed.
There is no downside with Nicolas. I find him a very engaging character and good person. He has been great in the group here. He has come in here and is already a favourite. He is a good person.
He is up for it. If he wasn’t up for it, he would have chosen to go somewhere else for an easier life and still pick up decent money. Everyone keeps knocking on about his age, but he is the fittest 34-year-old I have seen. He is a fabulous athlete.
Sadly for Clarke, Anelka has now made Albion look foolish for trusting him as the ex-Arsenal, PSG and Real Madrid striker has left the Baggies high-and-dry just over a week before the transfer window slams close.
For many observers the writing was on the wall the day Anelka signed for the Baggies, as Le Sulk looked a picture of misery from the very first moment he arrived at The Hawthorns.
In total, Nicolas Anelka was a West Brom player for just 45 days.
Watch Steve Clarke defend his signing of Anelka just seven days ago below, together with Anelka’s now infamous signing day video where the attacker looked miserable at having joined the club

When you talk about football prostitution, Anelka is a legend. I don't think there's no league that that guy has not played in except maybe in Nigeria. He should end his career in Enyimba.

And retiring happens to be the best respect he'd pay his agent?
