Meet The First Female LASU Students' Union President by sojiboy(m): 3:03pm On Aug 24, 2013
***My Chat with The First Female LASU Students' Union President***
After the press Confrence Organised by Nans Lagos State chapter On the 22/08/2013 @ International Press Centre (IPC) Ogba. I meet with the first FEMALE PRESIDENT in the history of Lasusu(Com.Hassan Mojirade Monsurat aka M.J) relax as u enjoy the chat...
AngelGabby-Goodafternoon,May I meet you?
Com. MJ- I am Com.Hassan Mojirade Monsurat,The LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' UNION PRESIDENT,Am a final year student of Economics in faculty of social sciences.
AngelGabby-Whatare your portfolios before emergingthe NO1 Lasu Student
Com.M.J- I served 2 times in the Student parliamentary Council,I was an Honourable representing my constituency in my 200l and 300l,I was the secretary social commitee before I contested as the Vice-President of the Students' Union and latteremerged as the president of the students' union.
AngelGabby-How did you feel when you were declared the President?
Com.M.j- Well it was just a normal feeling I had when I earlier emerged as the V.P,Nothing serious that much,I just believed there will be more challenges ahead of me.Initially I was thinking I couldnot handle the position because, Normally being a students' Union president in Lasu is not what comes very easy even for my Male counterpart and considering been afemale the BIASED perspective that am a lady and it poses question like How can a Lady rule Us?, but I was able to overcome that with the help of my colleagues, who stood by me and encouraged me andwith my little experience as the former V.P of the Union,I just feel normal,Nothing special.
AngelGabby-Whatare your achievements within the period that you have been declared president of the Lasu Students' Union
Com.M.J- Well,Its not actually something that have been for a long time,Its just within few months unlikethe one year Tenure I should have spend If I was elected originally from the beginning of the Tenure but with the little time we have spent in Office,we have been able to set records for incoming regimes to break. We have been able to achieved what have never been done in the history of LASUSU.
*The Lasusu Match,That is the first of its kind in Lasu.
*We also have the Lasusu Magazine the first of its kind too.
*Then we did Miss Lasu beauty peagant competition and
*we had the CULTURAL Stimulation which is the first of its kind which is basically done to promote culture among our students, because it seems alot of studentshad already forgotten there heritage, some students feel because they are now student they should forget their culture(i.e Yoruba,Igbo or Hausa culture) and all they do is english and western culture,we did the Cultural Stimulation to IGNITE and REVIVE the cultural spirit in Lasu.
AngelGabby-How are You Combining Academics with the Union Activities?
Com.M.J- That is the least of all challenges am going through because normally am a WORKAHOLIC,I am use to merging so many things together even bfor i became the president. After my hustling and bustling at school in the morning and afternoon,I get back to my room late at night. Most time i dont sleep at ,I use it in covering up what i missed during the day i.e I do my reading overnight. The only difficulty i have is attending lectures,Most times I am not able to attend lectures and even when am in class i get emergency calls/texts so i leave to attend to crucial issues that most happen to be a matter of life or death of our Union members. Most time there is always issues that aglfeect our students welfare I MUST attend to ,Its notthat I dont like lectures but the mantle bestowed on me require me to sacrifice my classes/lecture for the well-being of the populace/Lasuites.
I get notes from my colleagues and I read them at night and I also get text books and material to aid myreading.
AngelGabby-whenYou are NOT into Union activities, whatdo you do?
Com.M.J-Am always in my hostel,I am not a very socila person like that,I dont attend parties and all sorts,am mostly in my room readin or relaxing. If I am not in my hostel, then I will be at home with my Family here in Lagos.
AngelGabby-Whatis your advice to the Fedral Govt concerning the Ongoin ASUU Strike?
Com.M.J-The only thing I can say is for F.G to meet ASUU demand(s),Because ASUU demands is what we students are in support of,even IF we ar not in support of the strike action.what ASUU is demanding for is genuine,I mean Adequate funding of Education from F.G which I believe it going to help the economyof the nation as a whole is Genuine.I just want F.G to attend to ASUU as quick as possible.
AngelGabby-whatis your Advice to Female in NigerianInstitutions especially Universities?
Com.M.J- My advice for female students is for them to be focus and well determined, especially for the fact that alot of people within and outside the country have been attaching so many negative comment to our female students in Nigeria institution especially Universities,Claims like all they do is Aristo,Prostitution and the likes, but that is not true,we have femalestudents that are CARVING GOOD IMAGE for females in Universities both in Nigeria and outside the country, attaining leadership positions like myself(smiles),and doing best in the academics even more than our male counterparts. I strongly advice female students to be more focus and study hard because there is so much competition now among we and our counterpart and we are still fighting for gender equality and if we are fighting for such, then we should be up and doing infact doing better than our counterparts in all ramification because What A Man can do A Woman can do BEST.
AngelGabby- (Smiling) Do you have a Mentor?
Com.M.j- Not really or let me Just say God and my Father, because most of all I do are from the priciples God laid down for man and I learn alot from my Dad.
AngelGabby- Can you tell us who your Dad is or his full name if you wont mind.
Com.M.J- Why cant I,He his Alhaji Chief Dr.M.A.K Hassan ,He is the Aree Musulumi Baduu Oba Adinni in Epe. Baduu town in Epe,He is my mentor.
AngelGabby-In the nearest four years what will you be doing?
Com.M.J- God willing I should have completed my PH.D and probably come back to the system(Lasu) because I wish to impact lifes by lecturing Gods willing and If NOT I will own an Organization,I will want to run an NGO basically for women and children.
AngelGabby- Does grades affect Career? Your Opinion please...
Com.M.J- Yes it is but not in all cases,If one graduated with 1st class and cant defend it,You start asking, how come u made 1st class. But for those that can defend it,its a plus on there career and those that cant defend it,its left for them.
Basically what is most important is building oneself for Labour Market,There are some 2:2 students who are far better than 2:1 and 1st class students.Skill acquisation is an added advantage to any degree in school. If you have a 2:1 and you cant defend it,Its a blow on you, your department and your school .
Angelgabby-Words for ASUU,FG and Nigerians students?
Com.M.J- First of all for ASUU,Please find other means of achieving your negotiations been implemented with F.G,Instead of resorting to strike and distrupting tha academic calendar of the school which will definately affect the students career and elongate ourstay on campus.
For F.G I want to categorically say that most of our leaders now benefitted from free and uninterrupted education, why shouldnt we? I want F.G to fund education more and properly or better still they should heed to Unesco recomendation which is 26.5percent budget allocation to education. And I think Nigerians should employ the socialist system of economy instead of the capitalist system we are operating.
If the masses must be Librated,Education is the only key for Libration and the best way to achieve that is to fund education properly and give free education oraffordable if not free.
And lastly to Nigerian students,I will advice the to study hard, lets be focus and Maximize this strike in getting ourselves into any artisanal work or Learn Trade. This will help us alot.
AngelGabby-Thanks for your time Her Excellency.
Com.M.J- Its My pleasure Mr.Press...Laughing
