FG Approves N1.3bn For Design Of 5 Fast Train Lines.

billante: Abuja – The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved N1.3 billion contracts for the design of five fast train lines across the country.

The Minister of Transport, Alhaji Idris Umar, disclosed this after the Council meeting presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo, at the State House, Abuja.

Umar said that the Council had approved the contracts to ease the burden of transportation across the country.

“Today I brought a memo to Council seeking for the approval to award contract for consultancy services to carry out feasibility studies on five corridors.

“The first is Lagos-Abuja. The Lagos-Abuja is intended to usher in the highest speed train system which is a distance of 615km.

“It is our hope that the train can ply from Lagos- Abuja within a maximum period of three hours with about five stops.

“The total contract sum for the five corridors is N1, 334, 405, 366.74 with a completion period of seven months.’’

The minister said that the light rail, which was conceived to ease transportation problems, would “compete favourably with the air industry’’.

The second rail line is Lagos – Benin with a distance of 300km while the third will run from Ajaokuta – Abuja, a distance of 533km.

The fourth and fifth, from Zaria – Illela and Benin to Aba covered 520km and 500km respectively.

Umar said that government was committed to the resuscitation of the railway system in the country.

He said that a double approach adopted included the rehabilitation of the existing narrow gauge rail lines and the resuscitation of the railway in the area of the modernisation. (NAN)

If you cared to read through you would have seen that the contract was awarded last year September with a completion period of 7 months and @ the Ministerial platform this year the transport minister hinted that the designs are ready and adverts will be made soon for the Expression of Interest by the private sector for PPP arrangement to develop this lines..

GEJ fresh air is brining to life all the dead Infrastructures in Nigeria.
It will be very very good if the eastern railine (PH - Maiduguri) could be fixed on time. such will relive Lagos of many economical activities/Pressure from other part of the country. this will also go a long way to benefit Nigerian along that axis.
Welldone GEJ,
We are really proud of you

General Electric is involved in the present improvements in the rail sector. Most of the trains that are currently running were refurbished by GE. They also plan to export trains and coaches from Calabar to other African countries.

I'll show you a presentation from GE (@ the Ebute Metta workshop where they refurbished some of the trains that are currently working).

About GE Transportation

GE Transportation is a global technology leader and supplier of various transport solutions including freight and passenger locomotives. Its presence in Africa dates back to over 100 years, having supplied more than 1,000 locomotives supported by its after sales service, maintenance and parts. For more information please visit: GE Transportation

How we overcame the challenge:

GE’s company-to-country agreement with Nigeria, signed in 2009, provided GE’s transportation business with the opportunity to work with the NRC in delivering a rail solution consisting of 25 diesel locomotives, which will contribute to re-igniting the vigorous rail driven trading of goods such as oil, and enable regional trade growth in East, Central and West Africa. In addition to supplying the locomotives, GE is also training NRC employees and transferring valuable skills as part of this agreement.

National Railway Corporation:

Previously known as the Government Department of Railways, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has been in existence for 112 years. It runs unilaterally designed track systems made up of 3,505 kilometers of narrow gauge tracks and approximately 300 kilometers of standard gauge tracks respectively. The NRC’s locomotive fleet includes new and aged engines, couchette-type sleepers, air-conditioned first-class and non-air-conditioned economy-class passenger coaches and wagons.

NRC challenge:

Aligned to the Nigerian Government’s renewed commitment to rebuilding its rail asset, the NRC identified the need to build its locomotive fleet and invest in further infrastructure maintenance.

Solution’s impact on Nigeria:

The NRC’s new GE diesel locomotives will increase rail capacity, provide additional revenue that can be re-invested back into Nigeria’s economy, and assist in fast tracking regional trade in the East, Central and West Africa regions. This in turn will help attract foreign direct investment and contribute to infrastructure development for short and long-haul destinations within Nigeria and beyond.

I have travelled by rail in many countries, by Deutsche Bahn's ICE, France's TGV, Tallys, Austria's Railjet and Switzerland ' s SBB IC, but none equals the hilarious experience i had travelling by train along Enugu- Port Harcourt in the 80s.
One of my sweetest childhood memories were along Enugu, Agbani, Ugbawka, Oduma- Achara, Ndeabor, Afikpo, Ovim, Ikwuano Umuahia, Ibeku, Umuahia and Aba train stations.
Great to know those wonderful years are coming back.
Travelling by rail in Nigeria were big fun in those days, no fear of armed robbers or accidents.

most of the media houses are busy promoting propoganda for the opposition since nigeria media houses dont do free reporting. They are paid to publish anything. and this present government dont pay for publicity ,on like a certain party that when they commission street light and taxi and fabricate lies it makes front pages of newspapers

Please can you give me any info about the status of the monorail project (including articles, pictures, videos, etc)? I'm getting conflicting reports about the project from people in Port Harcourt. I already have info about the Lagos LRT and Abuja Metro.
