The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr George Uriesi, said yesterday in Abuja that at 11 per cent airline passenger growth, Nigeria was one of the few countries experiencing double-digit growth rate in the world.

Uriesi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that between January and June 2013, the number of airline passengers in Nigeria was estimated at 8 million.

He said the industry was on a five-year consecutive double-digit growth track, but derailed in 2012 because of the accident recorded by Dana Airline.

“The figure for the first half of the year - January to June - is about 8 million passengers; it represents almost 11 per cent growth.

“We have had consecutive double-digit growth for four years and we were on track to get consecutive double-digit growth for five years last year if not for the crash of Dana Airline aircraft after which a lot of airlines went out of the market for a while.

“So there was a big lull in the second half of last year which then, for the first time in a five-year cycle we dipped below double-digit growth, Uriesi said.

“And this year again we are racing very fast to achieve double-digit growth even on the year before because the airlines are back, the airplanes are full, so it’s an indication of a very strong underlying economy. One of the indices is the growth of airline passengers”.

“The trajectory was unfortunately diminished between July and December because so many airlines went out, so it wasn’t a real indication of the potential of the industry but as of January this year the industry is back and is climbing very nicely”.

“We are on track to do about 16 million passengers this year and if we do 16 million passengers that will be going towards 16 per cent to 18 per cent growth.’’

Uriesi told NAN that the double digit growth was attributable to the major remodeling works going on in several airports in the country.

He added that many airlines were also increasing their fleets and that it was an indication that the investments made in the aviation sector was beginning to yield results
.

He said that that the newly remodeled Akanu Ibiam Airport in Enugu attained international status on Saturday when it recorded a flight of 153 passengers to Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian Airlines, he said, would operate in and out of that airports four times a week.

“If we hadn’t remodeled that terminal we would not be able to do this there because we created the facility for international traffic in that terminal so the same thing will be replicated elsewhere.’’

Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, now has the capacity for any international airline that wants to come and we are actively working in the background trying to encourage a number of airlines.

Those that had stopped coming there and those who might want to come there; we are trying to encourage them to start flying into Kano also.

“So there’s a linkage between the growth, infrastructure and the impact on the country.”

Exactly! Coupledwith the fact that the FG has eliminated import duty on aircraft spare parts, and the single-digit interest rate for airlines seeking to buy new aircraft, I foresee a drastic reduction in airfares.

More grease to Stella Oduah's elbow. She is a much better aviation minister than Femi Fani-Kayode ever was.

Yea, that's important. The solution to the issue would be increased refining of aviation fuel and/or licensing of more importers of the product. This would lead to a reduction of it's price.

Talk normal Bro. There's difference between being satisfied and being rich.. Most Nigerians ain't simply getting the basic stuffs to live a contented life.. Those figures rose from business and issues I guess.. What do you say when most have to spend more than they earn??

Am still amazed at the ease with which we are hoodwinked in Nigeria.

(1) Airline passenger growth is fuelled by lack of alternatives like good road travel & proper rail travel.

(2) The decline in the figures were largely due to fear of flying after the Dana crash (An aftermath that saw the wealthy flying from Lagos to London to fly to Abuja)

(3) The fragility of his growth figure is obvious. If only 1 airline could affect the growth % so much, then it means, the industry is fragile meaning the % figure would have disappeared if AERO & ARIK pulled out of the industry.

(4) Its curious Dana could have brought down the % growth but AIR Nigeria did not...hmm

(5) We should be challenging him and his boss Stella Oduah for the high taxes collected on Airfares & what they do with it instead of sycopantly praising them. A one way ticket to Abuja of 18,000 gives 25% to the airline and the remainder is Aviation Tax

@Topic: Very good development. I pray it is sustained such that we would have more confidence in flying.
Any investment in Nigeria is profitable IF given the condusive environment and basic infrastructure

Eliminating import duty is still a mirage and nothing tangible has happened to that effect. The Nigerian custom still collect tax on aircraft parts imported into the country. The president merely made a statement, but up till now, it hasn't being effected with enforcement and law.

If I tell everybody the rot going on in all our airports and aviation, we would all feel ashamed for the minister of aviationg and GEJ. The minister knew that most Nigerians are novice when it comes to aviation. Therefore, they perfected the way of remodelling the airports so that gullible people would think aviation minister is the best. As am talking to you, the United State of America is planning to withdraw our Cat-w certificate.

The prolems we have in the aviation is that all the old equipment which were being used for over 40yrs ago are still being used without upgrading them.
