Manchester United forced
through a late deal to sign
Marouane Fellaini from
Everton after an earlier
attempt to bring Ander Herrera
to Old Trafford collapsed amid farce.
United were also reported to be
close to sealing a deal for Real
Madrid defender Fabio
Coentrao. Belgium international Fellaini
completed a £27.5 million move
from Everton after handing in a formal transfer request hours
before the 11pm deadline. It is the second time new United
boss David Moyes has signed
the 25-year-old, having taken
him to Goodison Park when in
charge of Everton. Earlier, United's attempts to sign
Athletic Bilbao midfielder
Herrera descended into farce. Moyes identified Herrera as a
potential target and it was
believed United were willing to
pay Athletic's 36 million euro
(£30.5 million) asking price. It then appeared three United
officials had arrived at La Liga
headquarters in Madrid to
complete the formalities that
would allow Herrera to finalise a
move to Old Trafford. However, it now seems the trio
were imposters and had nothing
to do with United at all.
Subsequently, United withdrew
from the transfer, even though it
was established they had an additional hour to conclude the
deal providing a Deal Sheet with
the signature of both clubs and
the player was submitted to the
Premier League. Insiders claimed that Moyes felt
the buyout clause was too high
and attempts to try and bring the
fee down failed. Coentrao, who has made no
secret of the fact he would like a
move away from the Santiago
Bernabeu this summer, is
expected to join United on loan
for the rest of the season. A move to United was opened up
after they failed in their efforts
to sign Leighton Baines.
