Robbie Savage: Man United’s Marouane Fellaini was the best player on the pitch today

”In a game of few chances Chelsea were the better team and the goals came from two set-pieces. Chelsea were tactically spot on, they were big and powerful and creative when they needed to be, but scored from a corner when Rafael was marking Didier Drogba. How can that happen?

“And then for the equaliser it was the best player on the pitch who got the initial header on target – Marouane Fellaini – a great save by Thibaut Courtois but it fell to Robin van Persie and he reacted quickest to smash it into the goal. United kept going, but they did seem to lack a pace and energy.”

Marouane Fellaini's game by numbers:

34 passes completed
3 shots
3 tackles won
3 aerial duels won

[b]Playing slightly from the left of midfield but closing down Cesc Fabregas high up the field when he had chance, Fellaini worked hard to stop the man who prompts Chelsea from deep. Fabregas completed only three passes in the first 20 minutes and just 11 in the whole first half.

Given that the Spaniard has played more passes than anybody else in the Premier League, it was remarkable that United were able to stop him getting on the ball – and that owed much to Fellaini. Even when Chelsea dominated in the second half, he didn’t stop working.

Even when Chelsea dominated in the second half, he didn’t stop working. The Premier League tracking data shows that Fellaini covered 12.17 kilometres in the match, the most by any United player, and made 70 high-intensity runs. That was more than anyone else on the pitch and, tellingly, the most he has made in any game in a United shirt.

Ultimately he had his reward. In stoppage time, it was Fellaini’s header on goal that Thibaut Courtois could only parry into the path of Van Persie. The Belgian clenched his fists when the United striker slammed the ball home. He is making a contribution and is part of this team now.

I watched the game completely, I used to be a critic of Fellaini until today, he really impressed me and United would have looked like underdog team without him. Fellaini played excelently, IMO Rojo and Blind need to up their game, this is EPL where players need to be creative, fast, quick and smart, they are not doing it right. Rafael was good, Januzaj needs to take shot lessons, his shots are far too wide and off-target. Persie missed a couple of chances he could have converted into goals and sealed the match but, he had a solace afterall. De Gea was superb, save for his saves, United would have been 3 goals down. I love him for that. Shaw was good, the tackle on Willian was greatsmiley. It was a great game for United, but a bad game for Rojo, Blind, Mata, Maria(he missed goals), Persie(he missed goals).
Wilson is yet to impress me in the EPL, he looks like a bright chap.
