I don't support this development. We all know the problems that street traders cause, but they are part of the informal economy. If these people are not allowed to trade, it will only create an increase in Poverty. Certain decisions cannot be made until alternatives are made. Nobody in their right mind would be a street trader if they had a better job offer. |

@Fashola - Gov, I believe instead of raiding the streets of these people, the goverment should increase Job opportunities, and further increase its effort in providing good free education. Eko o ni Baje O. |

dblock: I agree with the statement in bold there. We may not like the truth but growing up in lagos, it is not hard to tell that the street traders do contribute a portion to the lagos economy. I am more for government helping create alternatives; maknig sure those are in place before embarking on this current move. |

Nigerians will be the first to condemn government for not making our country to look as beautiful as america, uk, south africa etc. Yet when the government decides to make a change, the same nigeria will call them names and even start casting and binding them in prayers. I have observed one thing about Nigerians, they hate change, no matter how positive the change might be. Nigerians prefer short cut solutions which of course crashes within a short time to long lasting solution. Its very very bad and the earlier people beging to accept positive change, the better for us. I see nothing wrong with what the lagos state governor is doing. May be he should have provided an alternative place for them to do their business or altenative job or something like that to assist them on the effect the action may have on their personal economy. But generally speaking, Fashola is in order. |

@dblock, if alternatives are provided for the street traders and the ones currently street trading now leave such a life, considering the population in lagos and the fact that people are still flocking into Lagos in high numbers what makes you think a new batch of street traders won't move in to fill the vaccuum left by the old? If government however makes it clear that street trading is not an option and illegal then work can be done from there. Of course alternatives have to be provided and if you read the article and follow news you would realise that new markets were built but the street traders did not move in. The street traders are better patronised in the streets by motorists. Sure these are lives we are talking about but putting sentiments aside, this culture has simply got to stop and it can't continue to be the norm. As much as government should provide alternatives which they seem to be doing anyway, it should be made clear that street trading is not an alternative form of employment and hence i think the lagos state government is in order. |
