For those of us in the medium and enterprise level of networking profession, we are used to upgrading IOS and firmware and even command level programming. In those days we could upgrade a lower router to a higher performance router by upgrading the bios to higher compatible bios.

For example you can upgrade a low cost linksys router to another router just be upgrading the firmware. TPlink router TL-1043ND,a 4-port gigabit switch, Ultimate 300 N Wireless Router with 3 detachable antenna plus USB Storage port can also be converted to a super router using the dd-wrt firmware. Without upgrade, a 300mbps (3 X 100mbps) wireless equivalent to thrice the cat5 speed is enough for communication, on the LAN side there is gigabit port and a USB port either for a storage device to be used as a network storage or for converting a non network printer to a network printer without a print server. These features are ideal at a reduced price is being sold.

But for experienced network engineer this router can be turned to a super router by firmware upgrade to dd-wrt. The methods can be found on internet through google or other search engines.
