IGNORAMUSES, READ AND LEARN: HOW CHINA BECAME A MAJOR CAR MANUFACTURER ''The automotive industry in China has been the largest in the world measured by automobile unit production since 2008. Since 2009 annual production of automobiles in China exceeds that of the European Union or that of the United States and Japan combined. In 2009, China produced 13.79 million automobiles''. HOW IT HAPPENED 1980 to 1990 ''The passenger car industry was a minor part of vehicle production during the first three decades of China’s socialist economy. As late as 1985, the country produced a total of only 5,200 cars.... As domestic production was very limited, import totals rose dramatically, despite a 260 per cent import duty on foreign vehicles. Before 1984, the dominant exporter of cars to China had been the Soviet Union. In 1984, Japan's vehicle exports to China increased sevenfold (from 10,800 to 85,000) and by mid-1985 China had become Japan's second biggest export market after the US. The country spent some $3 billion to import more than 350,000 vehicles (including 106,000 cars and 111,000 trucks) in 1985 alone.. As this spending binge began to lead to a severe trade deficit, the Chinese leadership put on the brakes, both through propaganda efforts and by making foreign exchange much less accessible. Customs duties on imported goods were raised in March 1985 and a new "regulatory tax" was added a little later. In September 1985 a two-year moratorium on nearly all vehicle imports was imposed. While limiting imports, China also tried to increase local production by boosting the various existing joint-venture passenger car production agreements, as well as adding new ones. In 1983, American Motors Corporation (AMC, later acquired by Chrysler Corporation) signed a 20-year contract to produce their Jeep-model vehicles in Beijing. The following year, Germany’s Volkswagen signed a 25-year contract to make passenger cars in Shanghai, and France’s Peugeot agreed to another passenger car project to make vehicles in the prosperous southern city of Guangzhou.'' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_industry_in_China Can you see? Yet tomorrow you will say you want to be like China, but you don't want to sacrifice the way the Chinese sacrificed. Go on. Allow free imports of all foreign vehicles till infinity. An issue of this nature should go through the National Assembly where it would be thoroughly debated looking at the advantage and disadvantages...I personally don't see how the ban on importation of cars will increase local patronage. I mean how can you force the entire Nigerians to use one brand of car from Innuson motors? |

I am not after whatever argument you are out to start, i am just trying to make you understand that It's credibility is not one to be sure of, whether being sourced from via reliable mediums or not, hence the reason why you see lots of other articles being patched with their stories...If you know so well in this your Kokoro brain, you wouldn't refer to Wiki to make your points in the first place, and oga i take God beg you, no insult me..stay on the topic and don't escalate this into something else. 1 Like |

Seriously for naija to produce a car that will be competitive in african markets or for GEJ to be taken serious abt encouraging nnewi car maufacturer, then the white elephant behemothic project called ajaokuta steel mill should be fix, if that is done, then we will know that the chassis, spare parts and engines are all made locally, if this is not done then it means innoson motors are ckd's and are not made locally but assembled like peugeot(PAN) or the moribund VWON at ojo and might collapse at the end of the day.. 1 Like |

Let them ban whatever bannable, that all the know. Europe manufacture cars and still import from Japan and the USA. The governments in africa lack vision. They cannot ban cement that we can manufacture locally, what of the oil we export and import. Your undergraduates are 3 months at home and you don't know how to come out of it, you want to ban ban ban. Ban whatever please. |

HNosegbe: I'm not quite sure what the president means by this.Yes, there are imported vehicles in vehicle manufacturing countries but in Nigeria, we need such policy because of our negative attitude towards locally made products. I wouldn't blame us though because this is what experience has taught us about locally made goods. I support the decision but before implementing it, FG should first make sure that IVM plant can meet up with the huge demand that will arise as a result of the ban because if this is not taken into consideration, the prices will rise astronomically. |

eddiebruk: Dude stop embarrassing yourself. Wikipedia is a globally respected KNOWLEDGE SOURCE. You can verify the authenticity of articles by the REFERENCES AT THE END. Every credible article, whether on wiki or not, comes with references. That is how you determine what information is valid, if you feel the need to. There is no ''PERFECT repository OF INFO'' anywhere on earth. Every scholarly contribution, even a single textbook, is based on its references. Wikipedia is only a vehicle for the dissemination of information. Rejecting it is like rejecting the use of a pen because some people use pen to write rubbish. 2 Likes |

Idiots..many western car manufactures have plants in south africa, they don't import cars like we do. FG wooed Nissan and Toyota to establish a plant here but they gave flimsy reasons not to.. I think this is a good move .. empower innoson and create additional plants here, then we'll be on a path to owning our own competitive car brand .. 2 Likes |
