Archbishop Okogie To Jonathan - "Do Not Run For Presidency In 2015" by PassingShot(m): 6:26am On Sep 22, 2013
The opposition camp seems to be swelling by the days as another 'man of God" has warned GEJ not to contest the 2015 presidency if there was any pledge by him not to do so while seeking support in 2011 to become president.
Mr. Jonathan, listen to the voice of reasoning and bury the thought of contesting in 2015. Remember that as influential, as powerful and as dreaded OBJ was, he was disgraced from getting the support to get a third term as president. The handwriting is on the wall for you to do the honourable thing.

THE Archbishop emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to jettison the idea (if any) of running for a second term in office in 2015.

In an exclusive interview with The Guardian, Okogie said “the handwriting on the wall,” does not favour it, even as the election date is two years away.

Making direct reference to the alleged “third-term bid” of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Archbishop, who decried flattery and sycophancy ‘in high places,’ stressed the need to keep political agreement, if any.

According to Okogie, by 20015, the incumbent President would have served the country in that capacity for, at least, six years, the number of service years, which, he said, is enough for modest contribution to national development.

“If I were Jonathan, I will not try it (running for a second term), because the writing on the wall does not favour it. We have not even got to 2015, (yet) there is so much sycophancy and flattery. It is like telling Okogie now to go into politics: ‘come, you are the kind of person we want;’ you think I’m stupid?”

He continued: “Jonathan will be there for almost six years; there was a time, he was Vice, and now President for four years. What is he looking for again? It is just like comparing it with Obasanjo; what was Obasanjo looking for in third term?

“You know what happened then. Apart from the story that Jonathan made an agreement that he would do just one term, if it is true, do you think those who were there when he said ‘just one term’ are stupid.”

The Bishop Emeritus also expressed dissatisfaction with the manner the Nigerian elite go about the business of politics, describing it in the words of late musician, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, as “chop I chop.” He also condemned corruption and the killings in Nigeria.

“And why are so many people running into politics? 2015 is two years away; see how they are killing themselves. Who even knows who will get to 2015? What do you think they are looking for, money? Nothing else. They are not patriotic; they are not. All our political leaders, how many of them can beat their chests to say they are patriotic. It is just gimmick and pancake that they are doing.”

GEJ's problem is that he has bad advisers that keep egging him on.

"Go for it!" They scream! "You are the president, no one can challenge you! We the strong men of Nigeria are behind you"

They keep egging him on. Till he falls into a ditch.

GEJ, please leave politics for politicians.

Why is that Nigeria leaders always forget to the background they came from And African leaders have this "mentality" of clinging to Power.

Anyways, its either they get Relieved of the Power or they are taken away by MR DEATH.

Anyhow it Goes, GEJ can never be Robbert Mugabe!

I'm loving this already. The same voice that called gej 'blood of jesus' in 2011 are now telling him not to contest in 2015; they campaigned for gej using religion/region in 2011. This is what happen when u vote or elect based on religious sentiment and ethnicity.
Why do we keep supporting somebody with bad record of leadership, achievement, even when his flaws are obvious becos of 'na we son' symptom? Gej was a deputy govnor, govnor, vice president , actin president and president..he's done nothing 2 show he was in dz position. What can he do in 4 years(frm 2015) again? The worst part of him is that he cant keep 2 promise and agreement. How can we have a coy as a leader?

There is no doubt that GEJ currently has done better than his predecessors even with the presence of distractors on all sides. But he should think deeply before declaring his intention for a second term. Not because he is afraid of oppositions both within and outside PDP but because of the need to fulfill promises he made to people who supported him in his hour of need. Mandela is currently a Hero in Africa because he chose to leave when the ovation was loudest but if GEJ decides to run and all the opposition parties keep presenting Buhari and his likes I will still vote for Uncle Joe.

"He continued: “Jonathan will be there for almost six years; there was a time, he was Vice, and now President for four years. What is he looking for again? It is just like comparing it with Obasanjo; what was Obasanjo looking for in third term?"

For the 1st time I am going to disagree with the Archbishop. Jonathan not contesting should not be because some people who feel they own Nigeria are against his contesting. It should be his own decision to make. It is wrong to compare him with Obasanko's third term ambition. Obasanjo was to alter the constitution to achieve his ambition but Jonathan has every right under the constitution to contest. If because Atiku, Babangida, Buhari, Lamido do not want him to contest and then decide to make some parts of the country ungovernable and we now say he has failed, its unfortunate. The country belongs to us all and there are no 2nd class and 3rd class citizens. What kind of agreement should be made by a few crooks without the knowledge of majority of Nigerians? The Archbishop should rather condemn the existence of such an agreement if at all it exist because it is not good for the country today and it will not be good for the country in the future unless you want us to go back to the era where any one that wants to be something must go and pay homage to sultan of sokoto including obas and rulers of other tribes. Also, you want us to return to the era where you must have one gworo chewing mallam to back you up b4 you get contract with NNPC,NAFCON etc The same people that do not want Jonathan to contest were either sleeping or dinning with Abacha when he was hell bent on perpetuating himself in power.

If only he had pumped more money into education instead of copping private jets left and right, you wouldnt have ended up sounding like GEJ's wife.

With all the cumulative years of GEJ in power from deputy Governor to Full Governor to Vice President to President then to (s)elected Governor how many years is that?
He has not even really performed beyond reasonable doubt yet and he's doing everything outside ethics and legality for another term.
IF YOUR FIRST TERM WORKS CAN'T SPEAK FOR YOU WHAT WILL?

If he thinks being a cathlic cardinal gives him the right to spew rubbish....then I welcome him to 2015 with GEJ still occupying Aso Rock or whatever country Otueke falls under then!

Seriously, whats wrong with Nigerians?! How do you guys think? Why cant you guys ever see past your noses?!

GEJ already showed yall his hands and his intentions from day one that he wanted to be President for life so why is everyone acting all surprised? Abeg, go to my first posts when I started on this forum....

GEJ, the first week he became President , decided that his first official trips would be to Uganda and Cameroon respectively to go visit two of the worst dictators mankind has ever witnessed: Youweri Musevini and Paul Biya. He spent two weeks in those countries and by the time he returned to Nigeria (3 weeks into his Presidency), he presented his FIRST Bill to the National Assembly: A Constitutional Amendment for a 7yr Single Term Rule. Not a bill for jobs, housing, security, identity, Education or health....power was all that mattered to the bush man. This was the same Constitutional changes those two Dictators enshrined in their respective countries that enabled them keep their people in bondage for 30+ Years. In fact, GEJ was stoned in Uganda but he denied it to the Nigerian press. He showed his hands early that he was a serial liar, manipulator and wannabe-Dictator.

So, what are you guys complaining over now?
