Ibadan shoprite

A top government source in Ogun state recently disclosed that the recently opened Shoprite store in Ibadan met its revenue projection for 6 months in less than 8 weeks.
As food retail in South Africa is becoming more competitive, Shoprite is expanding in the rest of the continent. Sales climbed 28 percent to 11.7 billion rand in supermarkets outside its home market as the rand weakened against the dollar and some African currencies, making imports from South Africa more affordable. Supermarkets in the region contributed 14.2 percent to total sales.

Shoprite CEO Whitey Basson said “The non-South Africa operations are an opportunity to satisfy consumers’ appetite for upmarket products,” adding that the seven stores in Nigeria sold more Moet & Chandon champagne than all the liquor shops in South Africa last year.

I don't wanna be perceived as an Enemy of Progress oh! But with the coming of Big Retail Shops like Shoprite into the Nigerian Market, What becomes the fate of small time Retailers? Afterall Shoprite is NOT and indigenous company hence they would launder their profits to their Mother Country to develop Her!

Let's allow FDI but let's also protect local SMEs!
That is what is done all over the world!

i'm always amazed at the success rate of foreign companies in this country, while indigenous companies and businesses are striving hard to survive.

Same here!

Shoprite, Walmart.... These companies just spell DOOM for our SME's in the long haul, and I just hope government is closely setting limitations for them so they don't end up wiping out our local enterprises. These companies are foreign; and ultimately, the money they make will go back to their homes.
If to say na Nigerian chains, e for better. But Shoprite is South African, and Walmart is American.

I think policies should be made to kinda limit their priviledges.
IMHO.

At least, they employ local people.
And to those people who are typically governed by rumours,
Shoprite is booming in Ibadan .
Who does not want good quality products with guarantee.
Only port harcourt and Lagos has a bigger resident purchasing power than in Ibadan .
The Others are government money economies.

Be silent you cow. Linda only showed a picture of the opening of the Ibadan outlet with a huge crowd but said most that thronged the site on the opening day were mere "tourists". She probaly said something like of 10, 9 were tourist and only one a shopper which was true in the first days of opening.

Low patronage hits newly opened Ibadan shoprite

Barely a month after the grand opening of Shoprite at Heritage Cocoa Mall, on Oba Adebimpe Road, Dugbe, Ibadan, Oyo State, the retail store has been hit with low patronage

Fret not, personally, I don't even like these companies. Walmart and it's subsidiaries along with others big-box stores have ruined American economy, so I understand your concern.

There are not many intelligent people on nairaland to see that goof. Trust the Lagos media to swinge into action and hype that failed business decision. Fact is the Ibadan shoprite is not profitable. Trust them to correct the mistake without withdrawing the entire article started on a false and fraudulent premise.

Indeed. To be honest, Shoprite is an internationally successful supermarket brand. It takes a degree of specialist nous and efficacy to get to that point. They would have done their detailed homework which would cover extensive research and precise forecasting. Sales, profitability and overall success would never be predicated on what happens over a day, a month or even a quarter. I Don't know why anyone would then take the utterance of a mere gossip blog serious especially when it talks of "barely a month" as a judgement period for a new retailer Seriously? Such patently inane talk is near illiterate and should not be entertained by a citizenry capable of critical thinking.

We really should start discussing serious ideas and issues in Nigeria. On one hand, I hate the crass inanity displayed here and on many Nigeria chat fora because such show we do not, as a Nation, routinely host citizens with a mentality for solution provisions, entrepreneurship and innovation. That makes me sad for Nigeria because this is a big problem vis-a-vis local minds finding solutions to local problems.

On the other hand, as a private citizen and from what I have seen first hand throughout Africa, it makes me realise that the few who are 'clued on' will enjoy more dominance and far less competition. In essence, it is far easier to then become a Dangote or Adenuga in Africa currently than anywhere else. Those who are ready to face serious issues, learn aggressively and dedicate themselves to being very good in a specific area of opportunity can make a killing and a name for themselves in Africa because it is still a place where too many citizens than is healthy are obsessed with garbage that matters nought instead of striving to develop their thinking and thus efficacy.

Good development, shoprite seems to be making a hell of cash from Ibadan people.

Saw the new mall on my way to oluyole along ring-road, few weeks ago when I was in Ibadan for an assignment. It looks huge and good of course. The steel trusses have been fixed, left with fixing of the iron sheet.
