Polytechnic Lecturers Resume Strike On Friday by Donmams(m): 2:05pm On Sep 30, 2013
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has shed further light on why it is resuming an indefinite strike on Friday.
The National Publicity Secretary of the union Mr. Chirman Clement Selchum who spoke to newsmen in Jos yesterday said the union is calling the nationwide strike because of “the frustrating inertia of the Federal Government to convincingly fulfill any of the promises and agreements reached with the union before the suspension of the earlier strike on 17th July, 2013.”
Selchum said the attitude of government show it was not serious and that the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union after its 75th meeting held at the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Niger State resolved that the strike would be total until government shows committed to honouring the agreement it reached with it.
He cited other areas in which the Federal Government has failed the polytechnic system to include “The CONTISS 15 Migration for Lower cadres, Needs Assessment of Polytechnics, release of white paper of visitation to Federal polytechnics, discrimination between polytechnics and university graduates in job placement and career progression and the constitution of Governing Councils to Federal polytechnics earlier omitted.”
Selchum said ASUP would not go back on the planned strike except these issues are addressed by the government.
