New Lecturers Resume Work At AAUA To Replace Striking Ones by LMAyedun(m): 6:57pm On Dec 07, 2013
The crisis between the embattled members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities [ASUU], Adekunle Ajasin University [AAUA], Ondo state and their management is now deepened as new lecturers have been employment to replace the striking lecturers.

Recall that when DailyPost visited the campus last Monday, some old lecturers were seen in various lecture rooms teaching , thinking the AAUA authorities and the striking workers have agreed to end the five months old strike.

However, with a statement later issued by the AAUA ASUU’s Chairman, Dr. Meruyi Mekusi, insisting that they will not call off the strike until their national body orders them to do so might have forced the management to recruit new lecturers.

Relatively, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Femi Mimiko, has charged the newly recruited lecturers to key into the work ethics of the Institution and always observe the values of the teaching profession.

Prof. Mimiko, who also enjoined the academics to be loyal to the University at all times, gave the charge on Monday last week at the Opening Ceremony of a two-day orientation programme organized by the Institution for the new academics.

The VC said, “Our expectations from you on the job are to be in constant search for knowledge and devise the innovative way of dissemination. There must not be mention of you in anything that is not worthy. Be role models to students and enhance their moral standard. You must be like counselors to them at all times. Be shapers of opinions. Engage in constructive criticism of society. Be solution generators. Be focused and play a big role in national development.

“AAUA is a public trust that is dedicated to building leaders. You must, therefore, be loyal to the system. We expect you to give to this University an undiluted loyalty. We just launched AAUA ALWAYS as a new campaign. The message is that you must think about this University at all times.”

While the VC commended them for being found worthy of employment after rigorous interviews, he said that the orientation became necessary to expose them to AAUA culture.

He said, “This induction is to expose you to our own peculiar form of pedagogy that we want you to imbibe and to continue to sustain.”

The VC was one of the four resource persons at the orientation programme and he spoke on “Who is an Academic?” He said the new intakes were supposed to teach, engage in research and community service.

Prof. Mimiko urged those among them who were yet to earn Ph. D. to pursue it vigorously, saying, “For us, Ph. D. is a must have. Those who are yet to possess the Ph. D. should know that the most important thing that we will ask when you get here is, ‘How far you are going in the pursuit of knowledge, leading to the award of the Ph. D?”

He promised that the University would give them support to undertake Ph.D. Programme in any University of their choice.

Other speakers were the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rotimi Ajayi, who spoke on “Academic Profession in the 21st Century”; Prof. Francis Oyebade, who examined “AAUA Academic Culture”; and Prof. Niyi Akinnaso, who spoke on “21st Century Teaching”.

Billyonaire: Very good.
Billy, that is not good.

The gains of the past struggles of ASUU in AAUA are signposted by the several completed and ongoing TETFund projects such as the Obasanjo Multipurpose Hall, the only major Science Laboratories, ETF 750, four lecture halls in the quadrangle, the Space Research Building, which is now the Vice Chancellor’s Office, Yar’Adua and Awolowo Halls, the Central Library, and many Others. These are still outside the several millions awaiting application for infrastructural development. In the area of manpower development, TETFund has allocated several millions of naira to AAUA for staff training, both home and abroad, as well as conference attendance and research. To be specific, TETFund was a baby of ASUU; an initiative it came up with that started as ETF.

The lazy and unproductive lecturers should step aside for new lecturers who are ready to work. Atleast the new lecturers will learn from the sacked ones never to sacrifice their job on the alter of trade unionism.

If we'r not careful trade unionism will grow and become an untameble monster.

Yes workers can make demands but when they become unreasonable, they should be shown the way out. Only God knows what would have become of America if Ronald Reagan, then American president, did not sack 11, 345 air traffic controllers after a two-day strike. He did the right thing to avoid DANGEROUS precedent. Nobody is indispensable. Not even the president of Nigeria

The university only resumed on the 25th of November, and can only sack the striking lecturers if they failed to resume on that particular 25th of November.
http://dailypost.com.ng/2013/11/21/ASUU-strike-aaua-pulls-out-of-union-orders-students-to-resume-on-monday/

If the university held its 'Opening Ceremony of a two-day orientation programme organized by the Institution for the new academics' last week monday(25th of November), that is the same day the school resumed. It is impossible that the school recruited the new lecturers to replace the striking ones, because as at 25th of November(resumption date), the school wasn't sure of how many lecturers would turn up for work in order to decide on recruiting new lecturers to replace them and for the institution to hold its opening day for the new academics on the 25th November, it means the school must have concluded the recruitment process long before the 25th of November, so they were not recruited to replace striking lecturers. The story from Daily Post doesn't add up. Its more likely the institution only recruited 'more' lecturers.

The VC also 'commended them for being found worthy of employment after rigorous interviews'. It shows that the recruitment exercise started long ago(anyone familiar with recruitment process would know it takes a long time), making it doubtful that the were recruited to replace the striking lecturers.

take dat: The same monday, Daily Post said it visited the school and saw some old lecturers teaching happened to be the same day the university held the 'Opening Ceremony of a two-day orientation programme organized by the Institution for the new academics'.

The VC also 'commended them for being found worthy of employment after rigorous interviews'. It shows that the recruitment exercise started long ago(anyone familiar with recruitment process would know it takes a long time), making it doubtful that the were recruited to replace the 'sacked' lecturers. The school was under-staffed so it recruited more teaching staff! Moreover, there is nothing to prove that the school sacked stricking lecturers(the deadline given by FG is yet to expire). This story is the handiwork of a confused journalist.
AAUA's management pulled out of the strike action before the FG ordered all Federal Unis to immediately reopen and even before the FG issued a deadline to the striking lecturers.
Few weeks ago, AAUA's management announced the automatic sack of any lecturer that failed to resume work and also last week or so, announced the start of their recruitment process.
Lastly, the AAUA's management (VC) is kinda desperate and not even working with the FG's deadline just like FUTO.

Adex097: Good one from AAUA, ma sister's friend was recruited some weeks ago too...the funniest part of it is that, the guy just finished serving and has no masters degree.

God help us in this country

A testifier in the House and many more to come.
Welcome to Nigeria, where nothing is impossible. Recruitment process can start and end within 24hrs in Nigeria.
AAUA's management is more desperate than even the FG.. Just wondering why.

How can they start 'recruitment process' last week and from this report, the institution held its 'opening day ceremony for new academics' just last week. Recruitment process takes time, right from advertising the vacancies to the several interviews which will be conducted by the university management. The VC himself commended them for being found worthy of employment after 'Rigorous Interviews'.

*FUTO's VC already denied sacking any lecturer.

grin grin grin Psych Ops methinks.
Given the short window, the emboldened could only have been achieved if the Federal government had drafted in lecturers from the Army. A credible source once told me this was how Margaret Thatcher (the Iron Lady) broke the back of the teaching unions in the '70s.

Daily Post is rather confused. The University resumed on the 25th of November. If the University was going to sack striking lecturers it can only happen when lecturers fail to turn up on the 25th of November. The opening day ceremony for the new lecturers was held last week monday which was on the 25th of November, it means the new lecturers were employed long before the 25th of November. The link you provided which reported that the VC had commenced recruitment was dated 28th of November. How can you commence recruitment when the university had already finished recruiting long before then?

this news Daily Post's is outright misinformation, the university commenced recruitment exercise(job advertisement) in September, long before the school ordered striking lecturers to return to work in November.

http://www.aaua.edu.ng/career/

http://getnaijajob..co.uk/2013/09/adekunle-ajasin-university-recruiting.html?m=1

It shows that the school only recruited more hands, and did not employ them to replace anyone.

In fact, I made a mistake which I already modified. The school resumed on the 25th of November and the opening day for new lecturers was held the same day. There was no way the university management would have known how many of the striking lecturers was going to turn up for work on the 25th of November(the resumption day), so they couldn't have planned on replacing them with the new lecturers who commenced their opening day on that 25th of November(resumption day).

Yeah... Its just the beginning. They've not seen anything yet. The number of strikes done by ASUU in the past 15 years is unbelivable. And all of them boil down to one thing SALARY INCREASE.

I actually do not blame students that support ASUU 's comouflage of ''improve the status of Nigerian Universities''. Did Nigerian Universities just start getting bad. And by the way which is more important '' infrastructure or the quality of education? - I mean quality education without sorting and fvcking to pass. Can 50% of our so called naija lecturers compete academically/ intellectually with Ghanian lecturers. Do our lecturers read before coming to class ? Do they update their handouts or pass the same expired information in old papers from generation to generation ? If ASUU is actually concerned about the state of Naija universities, they would have started cleaning the mess from within by removing the bad eggs amongst themselves first. Open ur eyes Great Nigerian students.

The biggest lie the trade union called ASUU had ever told to anyone who cared to listen was that they were fighting for the quality of education for students.

The same students they've turned to slaves in their respective schools. Sex slaves, labor slaves, financial slaves. Comply or fail!

Over 70% of the lecturers are openly involved in this business of forcing students to either sleep with them/sort their courses or fail....only to turn around and claim they are fighting for the students.

Government has also not helped matters cos if they had not neglected their responsibilities of properly funding the universities over the years, ASUU wouldn't have used the welfare of students as their defense for their real motive.

The first step to attaining quality education in our schools again is not infrastructure or whatever. It's by prosecuting all lecturers who are involved in sex or money for marks.

This post does not make any sense!

This current ASUU strike isn't about 'Salary Increase'.

Our universities did not just start getting bad, I concur but should we then continue with the bad system or should we look for ways to put a stop to it? Which is why ASUU's demand for revitalization of the universities is important.

There is no association, group or organization where you will not find bad eggs mixed with the good ones. So there is no denying the fact that there are bad lecturers but the buck doesn't rest with ASUU. ASUU is only a trade union, it has no power to hire or fire lecturers. It is the university management that can hire lecturers, they can also query, discipline and fire bad lecturers. The ASUU chairman cannot punish licentous lecturers only a university management can do so, and who appoints the University heads/administrators(VC's, Pro-Chancellor and Governing Councils)? It is the 'GOVERNMENT'(the President for federal universities and state Governors for State universities). The rot starts and ends with Government(either Federal or State) depending on the institution!

Nigerian lecturers cannot compete 'Academically or Intellectually' with Ghanaian lecturers? Well, it is your opinion. Do you know what it takes to be employed as a mere graduate assistant in a Federal University? It means such a person would have graduated with a First Class and minimum of a 2.1. Do you know what it takes to bag a First Class in a Federal University? Lots of hardwork, perseverance and exceptional brilliance. These Nigerian lecturers you claim are not competitive or up to date Academically/intellectually, are the same ones many of our political leaders who starve our universities of adequate funds but loot our treasury to establish private universities where students pay good money 'hire'. And many of them who leave the shores of Nigeria gets hired by foreign universities. Are those foreign and private universities hiring lecturers who are not intellectually sound? Why are we always quick to condemn these academics, yet many of those who condemn the lecturers are themselves not intellectually sound?

If the Government fulfills its promise of annually funding the universities for 4 years to the tune of N1.2trillion, and the universities management make judicious use of what they are provided and build more hostels, lecture theaters/halls, equip the labs and improve on the infrastructural deficits, it is then you will see the 'Gains of this strike'. If ASUU did not embark on strike action, the Government wasn't prepared to inject more funds into our university system because almost all the top officials don't have children in public universities.
