Title : THE REASON WE CAN'T SLEEP

Fun fact : this is the 4th drama special of im ji Kyu's I'm watching and the 2nd drama special of im se mi I'm watching

A lady (ism) is lying down on the floor in a room with a telephone in her ear. There's no one on the line tho just the sound of a disconnected phone. She starts to drift off to sleep with the phone still in her ear.

Outside her room window (she lives in what looks like a basement), a man (ijk) is skipping rope. The sound of the rope disturbs ism's sleep. She wakes up angrily, goes out to meet him and says "hey, you crazy person, hey!" he turns around and they are startled to see each other. He asks if she was talking to him? She says well is there another senseless person skipping rope in front of my house by 3am? He says senseless? He points to his house which is opposite hers and says why is it the front of your house? It's the front of my house. She says I've been living here for 29 years now. He asks 29 years? I've never seen you before. She says I know the ups and downs of this town and I haven't been able to sleep for a week because of your lousy skipping every night. He says why does it bother you now when you've lived here for 29 years? I've been skipping rope here every 3am for a year now. Don't take your personal matters out on me, it's seems you can't sleep well these days. You should exercise. It helps you sleep. He continues skipping and she goes back to her room in angry frustration.

The next morning she's sitting with her mom and still feeling sleepy while her mom is watering some flowers. She says that guy has no conscience. Mom asks are you talking about yourself? Ism asks her mom if the noise doesn't wake her up? Mom says nope, I sleep well, I don't think about you. Ism says you're not even looking at me as we speak, do you prefer flowers over your daughter? Mom says at least when I look at flowers, I don't get frustrated. Ism eyes the flowers and goes into her room angrily.

Ijk is at a store, he's a part time worker and he's dozing off at the counter. Customers have to wake him up to attend to them. He forces himself to stay awake by drinking a bottle of energy drink. While working a girl comes and calls his name "young Jae" he looks at her, smiles and says how was your first day at work? She says let me ask you, does seokhun watch porn or does he masturbate (me:🤔) young Jae responds why are you asking me? She says you're his roommate. Young Jae says he's a 2nd year resident, he doesn't even have time to sleep. The girl whines "he hasn't been having sex with me😭" young Jae says ya! Can you keep your private information to yourself, there are kids here. She says we've been together for 6 years and we've never rested this long. If I touch him, he avoids my eyes, you really don't know anything? Did he say he's tired of me? Young Jae says no way, I'm sure it's because he's tired these days. He tells her not to bother and pursues her out of the store.

Ism is in her room trying to meditate herself to sleep. She almost succeeds when she hears the sound of a bottle opening, she angrily gets off the bed and opens her window. Young Jae is standing there drinking a bottle of energy drink and holding his skipping rope. She says try skipping and see what I'll do to you. He's startled. She says I haven't slept in a long time, disturb my sleep and see what happens to you. He says I too can't sleep properly if I don't sweat profusely because of my energetic body. He starts skipping, she angrily comes and starts to pour the soil from her mom's flower pot on him. She tells him to go meditate if he has trouble sleeping and goes into her house.

He angrily goes into his room drinking his energy drink. His roommate seokhun says ya you're a caffeine addict, always drinking that thing and that's why you can't sleep because your body is amped up. Youngjae says I'm not amped up, I'm overly energetic unlike you, I'm hot blooded! Seokhun says unlike me? Did jiyu say something? (I'm guessing jiyu is seokhun's girlfriend) Youngjae says you shouldn't make her worry as a man even if you're tired, are you that tired? Seokhun covers his face in embarrassment.

The next morning Youngjae is going out, he sees ism sweeping the front of her house where she poured soil and dancing happily. He says you seem very energetic for someone who doesn't sleep well. She smiles and says sarcastically "I might not have had much sleep but I feel much better, thanks to you" lol she starts to sweep towards his leg. He says I couldn't sleep well cos I didn't get my exercise. She says you're not a rabbit, you don't need to jump around to exercise, you should do silent things like sit-ups at home. He sarcastically responds "thanks". They both sarcastically say goodbye while she still sweeps more soil his way. A woman comes from behind, hits ism and says it's you yujeong! I thought you moved out, when did you come back home, you need to stop disturbing your mom with this theater stuff and live well. By the way tell your mom to come hang out with the neighborhood ahjummas, she hasn't been attending our meetings.

Yujeong goes in and asks her mom why she hasn't been meeting up with the neighborhood ahjummas? Mom says they're so obvious, all they do is brag about their husbands and kids. Juyeong asks what's so bad about that? Her mom says it must be nice to be as carefree as you. Do you know why she's inviting me? Because her son has been promoted to an assistant manager. When they ask about me, should I say my daughter failed at what she was doing and moved back home? Juyeong asks are you that embarrassed of me? Mom replies yes I am. You're 30 next year and instead of you supporting me, I'm still caring for you and that's embarrassing and frustrating. Juyeong tears up and goes into her room.

YoungJae is at his part time job, he's talking to a publisher on the phone to buy his webtoon. Apparently he's an aspiring webtoon artist. The publisher tells him the only thing available is a part time job as an illustrator. Young Jae says he'll accept it if they'll actually pay him. He ends the call happily and notices that his nose is bleeding. He cleans his nose and drinks his energy drink happily. He's surprised to see juyeong walk into the store. She's still sad from her discussion with her mom and buys 5 packs of soju. She goes to pay and young Jae says drinking during the day, what a nice behavior. She ignores him. He says you'll get hurt if you drink cos you can't sleep. She pays and walks out with her drinks. She sits outside the store drinking, people walk past her staring but she doesn't care. Young Jae ends his shift, comes out and says you've lived in this area for 29 years but you don't have someone to drink with. She says I'm not in the mood to talk to you, go home and exercise. He sits next to her and starts to draw her on his iPad. She asks what are you doing? He says it's strange but I get inspired everytime I see you, have you never heard that you look like a zombie? She spits out the straw she's using for her soju on him and he says so disgusting, do you always have to be so aggressive? She says a bum that has nothing working for her does not deserve to live peacefully. He says right, I guess that's why I'm your sacrificial lamb. She says do you want me to show you the true meaning of sacrificial lamb? He says no thanks, you already showed me enough yesterday. Her soju finishes. He says nothing is working for me and I also can't sleep like you, do you want to have a drink with me, it'd inspire me too. She says if you're buying, sure. He says I will.

Mom goes into juyeong's room, her things are in boxes. Mom says it's been a while since she moved back home but she still hasn't unpacked, I guess her mind hasn't moved back. She moves round the room checking things and sees a picture of juyeong and her friends, behind it juyeong wrote "even if we don't get popular or make lots of money, let's always hold on to what we love doing"

Juyeong and youngjae are at a roadside bar, tipsy. She plays with a claw machine but is unable to get a prize after many tries. She exclaims loudly that people who have nothing except hope will continue to get robbed like how the claw machine robbed her. He gives her some money and she looks surprised, he says she only played 5 times, he'll pay for her to play 5 more times, who knows, it might work and it might not. If you hold onto hope even if you get robbed, then it's not over. I can try 100 more times, it's nothing. She looks touched and says what an energetic man, must be nice to not get tired. He says you should also hold on to hope, your mind is aged, is it because you can't sleep? She starts crying and saying maybe, it's been 2 years, at first I thought "don't I have talent?" then I couldn't sleep because I was worried, then I thought what if I have no talent, as long as I'm persistent, then I couldn't sleep because it felt like I had no shame, I thought I could sleep if I give up, now I don't know why I can't sleep. When I lie down to sleep, cold sweat runs down my back. Lol she is drunk and feeling sleepy and he is tipsy and she suddenly starts to look attractive in his eyes.

They are walking home drunk and he is still drinking his energy drink, she asks him if it's a symbol of youth and why he's always drinking it? He says he must be healthy to become a famous webtoon artist. She sees a roadside stall that sells hair clips and she runs there drunkenly trying everything on the table. He watches her and feels his heart beating fast and wonders why?

They get to the front of their houses and are about to part, she asks him if he has a landline at home, he says yes. She says if you can't sleep, hold it in your ear and listen to the dial tone, it will make you feel at ease, perhaps there's someone else at the end of the line who also can't sleep, listening and connected. He smiles and says what a weird hobby. He gives her his phone number and says if you get tired of listening to the dial tone, you can just call. She smiles and goes into her house.

He runs into his home excited and brings out his telephone from the carton and sets it up, listening to the dial tone. Seokhun is on the floor exercising saying he wants to work on his stamina. Youngjae says if someone stares at you is it always that sexy, making your heart beat like crazy? Seokhun gets up looking serious and says can you not mention the letter s or sexy, it stresses me out. Youngjae asks what exactly is your problem? Seokhun says I don't know, these days I get scared when jiyu holds my hand or looks at me, I want to run away. Youngjae says what are you saying? Seokhun says enjoy that feeling now that you can, it doesn't last long. Youngjae says you jerk, you call that love? He throws a pillow on him and says you beast.

The next morning, juyeong's mom finds her passed out near the door. Mom hits her to wake up. She gives her mom a hairclip she bought and says I bought some soju yesterday so I couldn't buy the most expensive one but this is the 2nd most expensive, I think you'd look pretty if you wore it to gatherings. Mom rolls her eyes and says others bring luxury bags and stuff their children bought them, is this all I get? She pushes the clip away. Juyeong looks sad. Mom takes it, wears and asks if she looks pretty? Juyeong says yes. Mom says don't flatter me and leaves. Juyeong is happy.

Youngjae is in a meeting with an editor who tells him his webtoon is not funny, who wants to read about a zombie that walks around during the day working part-time jobs 🤭, stop drawing about yourself. He tells youngjae to just continue to be an illustrator for other webtoon artists instead of trying to be one. Youngjae sighs and says just make sure you pay me this time. The editor says you know we are going through a hard time, just think of it as talent donation. Youngjae shouts it's talent only when you're using me, why would I donate it to you? Hyung don't be like this to people like me, you think we're stupid because we do what we like? Editor angrily says I pitied you and cared for your talent.... Youngjae walks out angrily.

Juyeong is home trying to type her resume but she has nothing to put as job experience, she says for 6 years I didn't take a break performing at the theater but can I use any of that.

Youngjae walks home looking dejected, he's about to go in but changes his mind and knocks on juyeong's window. She opens and he asks if she can sleep tonight, she says she doubts it. He asks her to join him in exercising, not skipping but anything else. Her mom calls for her and she tells him to go wait for her up the street, she'll be there in 10 minutes.

She arrives with 2 hula hoops, he looks confused. She says it's not noisy and they won't disturb the neighbors, he says ah I didn't think of that.

They exercise while he tells her the plot of his webtoon, she laughs and says it's very funny. He asks if she's been able to write her cv?

She says she's trying but it's not going well cos the short work history she has ended up being a failure and in the part of the self introduction, she has to write about a time she learnt a valuable lesson from work. Can't failure be a valuable lesson? He says of course it can, you have to fail really hard in life to learn lessons. She says right? But if I write honestly, they won't pick me saying I'm pathetic. He says I should find the person who invented self introductions and get my zombie to bite him, she laughs and says that's funny. He says I'll write about it then. Her dad is walking past, he sees them exercising and smiles.

The next morning she's home cleaning the Hola hoop, her dad is about to leave for work and asks if she needs some money, she says a jobless person doesn't need money. He folds some money into her palm and says if you have someone you like, buy him something yummy and have fun. Don't be so wary and have fun now that you're young.

Youngjae is at his part time job drawing on his tablet (yayyyy wanna one's energetic is playing in the background 💃💃) juyeong comes in to surprise him and asks when he closes cos she wants to treat him to something nice. As he's about to respond, they hear a female voice call "youngjae-ya" in a seckshi way🤣 They turn and there's jiyu wearing a seckshi dress lol youngjae and juyeong are shocked. Juyeong wonders who she is. Jiyu continues talking in a seckshi manner "don't go home tonight". He says why are you talking like that, people will misunderstand. Jiyu comes closer and says what do you think, how do I look today, am I sexy? Lol juyeong is uncomfortable and mutters "sexy doesn't mean naked" jiyu asks youngjae if yujeong is a customer? He stammers no.. Juyeong looks expectant to see how he'll introduce her, he says she's my neighbor, we exercise together and stuff. Lol juyeong looks disappointed. Jiyu says OK, anyway you're not going home tonight right? Juyeong says you 2 can talk, I'll leave (lol she thinks jiyu is his girlfriend). She goes out sadly looking at the money her dad gave her. Youngjae tries to call her back but she doesn't answer.

She's walking home with some packs of soju and sees her dad, he's a security guard of an apartment complex, he's recycling the bins of the tenants and she watches him sadly, he sees her smiles at her and wants to hug her then remembers he just finished touching people's trash. He stops himself and asks what she's doing there, she holds his hand (awwn he's touched) smiles and says you know I'm most active at night. She shows him the soju, he smiles and says why would you bring that when you know I'm working. They both laugh

I'd rate this 6/10. It was good in a slice of life way. There was a really funny scene where they were about to have sex for the first time and his heart was beating all excitedly and he thought it was cos he was so much in love but then he passes out before they even get their clothes off their bodies 😂 They later realize he's been having those irregular heartbeats as a side effect of the energy drink he was addicted too
