Samtolly4JESUS: An average Nigerian has barely enough to afford a decent three square meal. Already depraved on standard living, it will be sheer injustice to deprive such of quality education to better himself. School should not be about who has money, it should be about who's smart and motivated enough to attend. Precious brains waste away on the streets on the basis of lack of school fund. Pure injustice!here, you fail to understand the prime factors that hold the keys to a good standard of living. If the government should provide jobs, security, good roads and a conducive environment, won't education be funded by individuals? Why then do you want the government to spend funds just in free tertiary education, leaving the capital-intensive sectors? |

Mazi_Omenuko: Dechyko; in your essay, you posited that the rise of the cost of tertiary education has risen to over 2000%, using a case study of OAU within the last decade. Did you also put into consideration the inflation rates and value of the naira when making that statistical comparison? It will be shallow to compare just figures without considering that the value of naira in 2003 isn't the same in this 2013 and the difference could result also in the increase of school fees. The exchange rate of dollar to naira in 2003 is N137 to $1. I think inflation statistics should reflect thus here. It is currently N160 to $1, an increase of below 10%. Compare to the 2000% increase in fees. 1 Like |

Samtolly4JESUS:Truth be told, what do you expect from an institution where the government is made to bear all the burden? There will surely be loopholes in such a situation because the government can not carter for all the institutions, hence, poor funding and further derailing of researches, infrastructures and projects, producing half-baked individuals as graduates. |

Mazi_Omenuko: Madam Alicia; no recommendation? Your essay just sounds like you were saying; "if you can't afford education, then go to hell".what better recommendation can be provided than for the provision of lucrative jobs, security, roads and electricity, that will arrest the case of low standard of living and hence, better funding.. Kindly go through the last paragraph of my essay for that. 1 Like |

Samtolly4JESUS:I was told that whenever you are involved in something, you should make room for "if, but, maybe" and also expect the unexpected. No covering up here, with the present day situation, a backdrop in our country's economy has become the order of the way so saying that the government should provide free quality education to students is just like "crossing the road with your two eyes closed... I am made to believe that what you mean by DESERVING STUDENTS are those that know their game academically, that is why there are SCHOLARSHIPS and not making education free for all, even does that do not know the worth. 1 Like |

@Deschyko: I love your use of the Canada scenario as an example to buttress your point on the feasibility of Free Tertiary Education. However can you give us more examples? Especially in the African context. Thanks. @Samtolly4Jesus: I want you to explain why Free Education will better suite a corrupt ridden government like ours than Subsidized Education. Thanks. @Aliciakeys: "Raising taxes in Nigeria during a time of economic meltdown would be damaging and counter-productive." Please can you elaborate more on this Aliciakeys? Thanks @Mazi_Omenuko: Are you saying anything free is commensurate to low quality? Please expatiate, thanks. |

Samtolly4JESUS:This is informal education, you won't tell me that you need to be taught how to switch on a bulb, drive a car or operate appliances from an institution of formal learning. No, you can make use of social amenities without necessarily seeing the four walls of an institution. |

Aliciakeys:Deserving students are those who can. You can't tell me all scientists you know today where always top of their classes from the start. Some picked up along the way.. So you see why finance must not hinder the slow-starters we kill? And mind you, scholarship means freedom from the burden for a very limited number, meanwhile someone who knows much better narrowly missed out while a rich pea-brain schools. Poor decision. 2 Likes |

Obinoscopy: The low quality isn't as a direct result of price: but as a result of general attitude of Nigerians towards free stuffs. It can be likened to one that hangs out friends and his friends pay for his beer. He tends to abuse the drink; not because the beer is of low quality; but because its coming free of charge. This is what I termed "crowd mentality." |

Samtolly4JESUS, with free education to tertiary students, how do you intend to encourage independence and hardwork? With free education in all levels of education, how do you hope to sustain the economy and the enterpreneurial spirit of these students when they get out there? How do you make them understand that "nothing good comes easy" when you spoil them with freebies from primary level of education to teritiary level? 1 Like |

None of the proponents of free tertiary education told us how government would source funds to maintain the free education scheme. All we hear is the advantages of free education but no blueprint on possible means of achieving this. |

@Deschyko and Samtolly, you are supporting free education at the tertiary level. Do you agree that most of these students spend a lot on social activities, lovers, etc. even more than their school fees? Have you attended parties and clubs in schools? Have you seen the display of affluence, wealth and competition by some of these students? Do you really think these students cannot afford their own education to a certain extent? |

Obinoscopy:According to the result of the Laffer curve, it is pstulated is increasing tax rates beyond a certain point will be counter-productive for raising further tax revenue. A hypothetical Laffer curve for any given economy, hence increasing tax rate at this stage means, individuals have to worker harder and there is an extent one can work, causing breakdown. Breakdown leading to accumulated hospital bills and hence, a toll in the same economy. |

@aliciakeys, don't you think educational sector is more important than capital-intensive projects? Who will carry out these projects? Illiterates? Don't you think free education at the tertiary level will empower engineers, scientists, etc. to work out plans and projects that would improve our economy? |
Re: Nairaland Educational Debate: Winner :::ALICIAKEYS::::: by DesChyko1(m): 3:01pm On Oct 26, 2013 |
@Obinoscopy.. We're going to be the first to implementing it. Our African brothers are in the blind. It won't be the first we're making such achievements. We were also the first country to offset their international debt owed to the France aid @ CARACTA.. THE gDP is often utilized to make plans before the full amount ibecomes liquid cash. That's how countries execute projects. 1 Like |
