He was the embodiment of pure intellect,the bumbing professor with the German accent,a comic cliche in a thousand films. Instantly recognizable,like Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp,Albert Einstein's shaggy-haired visage was as familiar to ordinary people as to the matrons who fluttered about him in salons from Berlin to Hollywood.Yet he was unfathomably profound-the genius among geniuses who discovered,merely by thinking about it,that the universe was not as it seemed.
Even now scientists marvel at the daring of general relativity("I still can't see how he thought of it,"said the late Richard Feynman,no slouch himself).

Despite his fame and outstanding input to science,especially his best epitaph and memorial(equations of general relativity),Einstein however agreed thatt cosmological constant was his greatest mistake.Einstein found that his equations didn't have a solution that described a universe that was unchanging in time. Rather than give up a static and everlasting universe,which he and most other people beleived in at that time,he fudged equations by adding a term called the cosmological constant,which warped space-time the other way so that bodies move apart thus balancing the attrative effect of matter and allowing for all time. A year after 100-in. telescope on Mount Wilson revealed that the universe is expanding and the distance between any two galaxies is steadily increasing with time. The discovery cantered Einsteins description that the universe was unchanging with time.

In one of his groundbreaking 1905 papers,Einstein showed that Planck's quantum hypothesis could explain what is called the photoelectic effect,the way certain metals give off electrons when light falls on them.
