PhD certificate is the minimum qualification required to be adjudged qualified lecturer in Nigeria universities. The latest staff audit conducted by the National University Commission (NUC)-a statutory universities regulatory agency in Nigeria- revealed that there is acute shortage of PhD certificate holders in Nigeria Universities. The agency disclosed in 2006 that about 60% of lecturers in Nigeria universities did not possess the certificate. The implication of this is that, as at 2006, about 60% of ‘lecturers’ in Nigeria’s universities were not qualified to teach/lecture in their respective universities.

PhD is a postgraduate academic degree awarded by universities. The academic level known as a Doctor of Philosophy varies considerably according to country, institution, and time period. In Nigeria, completion of first (e.g. B.Sc., B.Agric) and second degrees (e.g. M.Sc., Mphil) is a prerequisite to undertaking a PhD certificate programme. However, candidates with first class honours may be admitted directly to undertake the PhD programme, although being admitted with only first degree is very rare. PhD is a terminal degree in many fields. Having a PhD prepares an individual for careers as researchers, scholars, lecturers and host of other opportunities. To qualify for PhD certificate, a candidate must have been adjudged/certified to have successfully completed a study on a given or chosen topic/event/phenomenon. The study must be original devoid of plagiarism with sound research design and carefully mapped out methodology.

Poor research has always been identified as the greatest impediment to acquiring PhD certificate in Nigeria in recent times as against the situation before now. The National University Commission (NUC) noted that..
