National Confab: Fashola Calls For Clear Agenda

The governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, has stressed the need to set a clear agenda for the proposed National Conference in order to be certain of its purpose.

In a meeting with the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue, held in his office, governor Fashola maintained that it was impossible to say with any exactitude if the President was right or wrong on his decision to embark on the initiative.

Fashola expressed resentments about the timing of the conference and pointed out that dialogue by its very definition demands that all views, both agreeable and disagreeable must be listened to.

“If those that do not agree are heckled and shouted down, then the platform for dialogue is immediately weakened,” he said, making reference to the heckling down of the governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, in Benin City during a similar visit by the committee.

“If we refuse to listen to the views of those who don’t think that we should be doing what we are doing, it portends for me great concern about whether or not we can dialogue and indeed if we should be having one,” he emphasised.

The governor insisted that the onset of the exercise “is the strongest implication on the challenge of leadership question that we face as a nation.

“If we do not believe that our elected leaders in the National Assembly can undertake the task for us then we must begin to imagine how many possible people and groups seek to.”

He stated that the position taken by the Edo State governor was the one that appealed to him.

Issues Of Dissatisfaction

“The reason I stand by governor Oshiomhole’s position in Edo is the underlying question we are both asking; what are we supposed to be talking about?

Governor Fashola further said that some of the issues of dissatisfaction in Nigeria lie in areas where there is no need to talk.

He listed the areas of concern to include unemployment, education, inefficient transportation system, irregular power supply, hunger and national security.

All these, he pointed out, could be resolved with “concrete economic plans of action, a clear roadmap for addressing all stakeholders, parents, teachers and students in that sector, urgent infrastructural renewal plan for the country and a vigorous and impassioned implementation of the power sector reform agenda.

“I believe that what Nigerians want is not just a better document but a better life.”

He also advised the committee to take a critical look at the report of the constitutional conference held in 2006, as many areas were vigorously and passionately defended, compromised and agreed.

A better document will enhance a better life!

Let's add capital punishment for corruption into our law cos the present constitution is flawed and encourages sleaze.

Thank you my bros.
The constitution is not in favour of economic development. Nigeria needs only one parliament. The salaries and entitlement of all government officials must be fixed and the rate of increment stated to avoid strike and fraud. EFCC should be free to investigate anybody including the president. The local governments should be strengthened and monitored. Finally government, must as a matter of urgency tackle corruption, medical facilities and education. Local and state govt should tackle primary healthcare , agriculture, road and security.

Also, that public and political office holders and their families should NOT seek for medical attention and educational opportunities outside the country. Anyone caught doing so should be jailed for a minimum of 8yrs without any option of fine.

Thank you for your additional contributions. Am sure those who benefits from this bad system will resist all attempts to make it better.
My only fear is who will sign the new constitution into law?

End of story.

Simple truth is this Government CANNOT be trusted to handle a truly all-inclusive and impartial National Conference. Ordinary recommendations of committees they set up themselves, they havn't implemented. National Assembly requests and resolutions, they are struggling to comply with. Yearnings of Nigerians, they don't give a damn about.

Trusting such leadership to properly convene and implement the resolutions of a NATIONAL CONFERENCE is wayy too ambitious almost to the point of absurdity.

Those who are of the opinion that this proposed "conference" is to achieve some devious objective for 2015 should not be ignored.

They stressed Justice Uwais, they stressed Nuhu Ribadu, now it's Senator Okurounmu's turn.

You have a good point but there is no harm in trying another . This time , the panel will be chosen by the ppu not the president. My only fear is implementation. It is possible to have a violent chauvinism if the true wishes of Nigerians are not implemented.
However, even if the result are thrown away, the dialogue will douse the tension in the air. Why should kano have more lg than Lagos? Resource control , some States are mere parasites, etc
Re: National Confab: Fashola Calls For Clear Agenda by FindOut(m): 11:32pm On Nov 02, 2013
Of course, no harm in trying. However, as to the panel representatives being chosen by the people without the influence of the presidency/PDP particularly in certain states, let's wait and see. Implementation is even still far actually, proper convening of the conference is what we should even beam our searchight on.

As to kano having more LGs or parasite states, we need to go back to fashols's main point whis is: THOSE ARE NOT THE MAJOR ISSUES BEGGING FOR ATTENTION NOW. Besides, exactly what direction is the conference taking? What's the focal point? What are the issues at stake? We are waiting to know. I assume some of that will be the committee's job.

I wont be surprised if we see an expedited (probably too expedited not to have been pre-planned) approach to the whole thing. Not to sound negative, but for now in Nigeria, as far as government is concerned, the only things that move fast are those things with plenty mago mago, chop chop & selfish interests inside.
