The proposed creation of 19 additional states to bring the number of states in the country to 54 has been entrenched in the new map proposed by the National Conference reported recently submitted to President Goodluck Jonathan

The recommendation was made by the Committee on Political Restructuring and Forms of Government jointly headed by Ike Nwachukwu and Mohammed Kumalia.

Initially, some Northern delegates kicked against moves to create additional states apart from the one proposed for the South-East which was overwhelmingly supported. But after series of consultations by the leadership of delegations, the Conference unanimously adopted the recommendation for the creation of additional 19 new states recommended for Nigeria.

The National Confab proposed just 19 new State. All region can not have 9 states each. I think the south West have the lowest number of states to be created.

NASS WILL NOT APPROVE IT.

States creation will naturally evolve when we practice True Federalism in Nigeria. Any state created now base on the current structure of Nigeria will be counter productive.

Every state creation since they were 12 has mirrored the rise in the poverty index in Nigeria. That is the more states created the more the rise in the poverty index. Creation of states is a panacea for sure rise in poverty.

As much as i do not support the creation of new state, but it looks like this will have a lot of support as very powerful interest will be appeased with this planned creation of new states ie the Ijebus,aniomas, ijaws,ogojas,southern kaduna gets gurara, katagun etc It can happen.

Although, for clarity purpose, the Northern and southern is divided into three zone each and of such each zone has 3 state to their name, but this proposal can only be possible upon the agreement of 2/3 vote of the house of reprensentative (240 Members), but if this does not yield any result the president may place an assent on the bill.

It's also possible that the citizens' of Nigeria may decide to foster/hinder this issue through referendum.

...And it is only in Nigeria we have a geographical location(Zone) called South-South. How does that even sound? Nigeria is so divided i don't even know the difference between "Zones" and "Regions" anymore! What about the "Middle belts"? What manner of classification is that? Thanks for enlightening posts BTW.

1) It will separate minority ethnic groups from majority ethnic groups. This will increase the political influence of minority ethnic groups causing a change in Nigeria's politics
Eg We won't be seeing scenarios where a single ethno-religious group will hold the country ransom because a new policy do not favour them

2) In 20yrs to come, these minority ethnic groups will support weak central(true federalism) because they tend to believe in themselves than some majority ethnic groups that have failed to learn to survive outside federal powers

SE having 4 new states,with what they concluded each geographical zone will have a vice president and allocation to the 9 states of a region will go direct to its VP then he will now share to the state administrators but there will be a president and a deputy president in the central together with NASS lower and upper house,so with this every zones are meant to develop at it own pace with the resource revenue formula of 50 50 between zones and the FG/central government,this is what I heard general ike nwachukwu explained in oghene show on AIT to the igbos.
