Introduction

The African continent is endowed with huge deposits of precious gems that are mined generating considerable profit. The continent has one half of the deposits located outside Russia and two thirds of the worlds forecast diamond resources.

Diamond mining is practiced by 15 countries in Africa. The largest of them, which annually recover over one million carats of diamonds worth more than half a billion U.S. dollars, are Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia and South Africa.

The other countries where diamonds are mined in Africa include Zimbabwe, Guinea, Ghana, Congo, Liberia, Sierra Leone, CAR and Tanzania.
