WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Navy on Tuesday pledged to cut costs for building new aircraft carriers, as it prepared to christen the USS Gerald R. Ford, first in its class of warships and a vessel whose $12.9 billion cost will exceed forecasts by almost 25 percent.

Rear Admiral Thomas Moore, Navy officer in charge of aircraft carriers, pledged that the next carrier, the USS John F. Kennedy, would cost $1.2 billion less than the USS Ford, which will be christened on Saturday.

The Ford features a new nuclear power plant, a redesigned island, electromagnetic catapults, new weapons and storage elevators, and an enhanced flight deck.

It has 10 million feet of electrical cabling on board, compared to 3 million on the predecessor ship, as well as 4 million feet of fiber optic cable, Moore said, noting sailors would also be able to watch television on board and receive regular emails.

The ship will produce 500,0000 gallons of fresh water a day, 100,000 more than earlier Nimitz-class carriers, Moore said. He said this would allow sailors to take "Hollywood showers," keeping water running while they bathe, instead of Spartan "Navy showers".

What a waste. Imagine if this kind of money had been spent on a new type of giant, luxury cruise ship, with every conceivable enjoyment on board. It would make a lot more waves (excuse the pun).

A new hypersonic spy plane, capable of flying up to six times faster than the speed of sound, is being developed by aerospace giant Lockheed Martin Corp., according to company officials.

The new aircraft, known as the SR-72, is the unmanned successor to Lockheed's SR-71 Blackbird, a twin-engine, two-seater, supersonic aircraft that was developed in the 1960s. The company's new spy plane will be able to fly twice as fast as the Blackbird and three times faster than current fighter jets, accelerating to Mach 6, which is six times the speed of sound, or more than 3,500 mph (5,600 km/h).

"Hypersonic is the new stealth," Leland told Reuters. "Your adversaries cannot hide or move their critical assets. They will be found. That becomes a game-changer."

Thanks, fuqua. Many don't realise that the earth is rich and bountiful enough to make every single person on it a millionaire. It is just the wasteful expenditure on weapons - app. 2 TRILLION dollars per year, that sucks the resources of the planet. Imagine if the world suspended military expenditure for just one year. Hunger and poverty will be eliminated from the earth. Just one year. In fact the stupidity of man is mind-boggling. It is as though we are under a spell.

How naive. Everyone doesn't hold the same ideals and you have to secure yourself against the threats that exist. It's the reason households and streets and estates hire security men. It's the reason banks are fitted with all those security measures. It's the reason taxpayer money is spent of law enforcement. Why then not on protecting the country? You think life as you know it in the modern world would be the same if the ideals and ambitions of Hitler weren't stopped by the might of arms? You think Israel wouldn't have been wiped off the map by their hostile neighbours if they couldn't defend themselves? You think there aren't insane jihadists that would gladly nuke America if they got half the chance and the weapons?

That is even ignoring the MASSIVE contributions of military research and technology to civilian life - including the very internet you love to spend time on. Or the rocket technology that brough space exploration and research. I guess Americans would be thankful you don't make decisions about their security. Maybe we wouldn't be facing the oil theft in the South and terrorism in the North in this country if we could live up to our obligations in matters of national security.
