Help!!! I Have Been Sick Since I Quit Smoking. by Nobody: 3:18am On Nov 10, 2013
For days now, I have not been myself since I stopped smoking cigarrette. This is not the first this has occurred. I have gone back to smoking because of this particular reason after quitting several times in past years. Please I need a good advice, I really wanna quit this time. I hate smoking now and I'm ashamed of being a smoker. If not for any reason, friends keep asking me why a handsome guy like me wanna destroy my life with cigarrette. I cried the day I watched myself smoke before the giant mirrow in my restroom and since then I swore never to have anything with smoking again. We are about to enter winter and I feel cold and catarrh every now and then which never occurred when I was smoking. Please kindly advise

You're going through the withdrawal phase. Just any other illicit or hard drugs, quitting can be very emotionally and psychologically painful. Researchers and scientist alike have come to the conclusion after streinous researches that tobacco is 10x more addictive than cocaine or marijuana because nicotine is very addictive same with the withdrawal stage. A tobacco smoker experience stronger withdrawal symtoms than more illicit drugs.

The sickness you're undergoing is just a phase in the withdrawal stage. You need to be strong my brother and don't give up.

The first few weeks after quitting smoking are usually the most
difficult and it's safe to say that it normally takes at least 8-12
weeks before a person starts to feel comfortable with their new
lifestyle change of being an ex-smoker. Withdrawal from
nicotine, an addictive drug found in tobacco, is characterized
by symptoms that include headache, anxiety, nausea and a
craving for more tobacco. Nicotine creates a chemical
dependency, so that the body develops a need for a certain
level of nicotine at all times.
Unless that level is maintained, the body will begin to go
through withdrawal. For tobacco users trying to quit, symptoms
of withdrawal from nicotine are unpleasant and stressful, but
only temporary. Most withdrawal symptoms peak 48 hours
after you quit and are completely gone in six months.
When you are experiencing symptoms of recovery (withdrawal),
remind yourself of why you are quitting; write your reasons on
a card and keep it with you. Remind yourself that whatever
discomfort you are experiencing is only a tiny fraction of the
probable discomfort associated with continued smoking (i.e.
Painful diseases like cancer, surgery, chemotherapy,
emphysema etc.).

Make The Switch!
Within 12 hours after you have your last cigarette, your body will
begin to heal itself. The levels of carbon monoxide and nicotine in
your system will decline rapidly, and your heart and lungs will begin to
repair the damage caused by cigarette smoke. As your body begins to
repair itself, instead of feeling better right away, you may feel worse
for a while. It's important to understand that healing is a process that
begins immediately, but it continues over time. These "withdrawal
pangs" are really symptoms of the recovery process.
Immediately after quitting, many ex-smokers experience "symptoms of
recovery" such as temporary weight gain caused by fluid retention,
irregularity, and dry, sore gums or tongue. You may feel edgy, hungry,
more tired, and more short-tempered than usual and have trouble
sleeping and notice that you are coughing a lot. These symptoms are
the result of your body clearing itself of nicotine, a powerful addictive
chemical. Most nicotine is gone from the body in 2-3 days.
Take Our Stop Smoking Readiness Quiz!
It is possible to talk yourself out of quitting by believing that your
tobacco use is not a serious addiction. Here's a quick quiz to help
gauge the seriousness of your tobacco use. If you answer "yes" to
three or more of the following questions, your smoking may be more
than just a compulsion.
Do I smoke everyday?
Has a doctor or dentist ever suggested that I stop smoking?
Do I find it difficult to imagine life without smoking?
Do I smoke to escape from boredom and worries while under stress
or pressure?
Have I felt physical or emotional discomfort when trying to quit?
Do I buy extra tobacco supplies to assure that I will not run out?
Do I prefer activities and places that allow me to smoke?
Do I inwardly feel ashamed of myself because of my smoking?
Has my smoking caused a problem at home or in a relationship?
Do I ever find myself lighting another cigarette without consciously
deciding to have another?
Do I feel that my life would be better if I did not use tobacco?
Do I continue to smoke even though I am aware of the health
hazards associated with smoking?
.
.
.
Within 20 minutes of smoking that last cigarette, the body begins a
series of changes that continues for years.
20 MINUTES
Blood pressure drops to normal.
Pulse rate drops to normal.
Body temperature of hands and feet increases to normal.
8 HOURS
Carbon monoxide level in blood drops to normal.
Oxygen level in blood increases to normal.
24 HOURS
Chance of heart attack decreases.
48 HOURS
Nerve endings start regrowing.
Ability to smell and taste is enhanced.
2 WEEKS TO 3 MONTHS
Circulation improves.
Walking becomes easier.
Lung function increases up to 30%.
1 TO 9 MONTHS
Coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, and shortness of breath
decrease.
Cilia regrow in lungs, increasing ability to handle mucus, clean
the lungs, and reduce infection.
Body's overall energy increases.
1 YEAR
Excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker.
5 YEARS
Lung cancer death rate for average smoker (one pack a day)
decreases by almost half.
Stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker 5-15 years after
quitting.
Risk of cancer of the mouth, throat and esophagus is half that of
a smoker's.
10 YEARS
Lung cancer death rate similar to that of nonsmokers.
Precancerous cells are replaced.
Risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney
and pancreas decreases.
15 YEARS
Risk of coronary heart disease is that of a nonsmoker.
What Are Some Rewards of Quit Smoking!
Within a few days you will probably begin to notice some remarkable
changes in your body. Your sense of smell and taste may improve.
You will breathe easier, and your smoker's hack will begin to
disappear, although you may notice that you will continue to cough
for a while. And you will be free from the mess, smell, inconvenience,
expense, and dependence of cigarette smoking.
It is important to understand that the long range after-effects of
quitting are only temporary and signal the beginning of a healthier
life. Now that you've quit, you've added a number of healthy
productive days to each year of your life. Most important, you've
greatly improved your chances for a longer life. You have significantly
reduced your risk of death from heart disease, stroke, chronic
bronchitis, emphysema, and several kinds of cancerp;not just lung
cancer. (Cigarette smoking is responsible every year for approximately
130,000 deaths from cancer, 170,000 deaths from heart disease, and
50,000 deaths from lung disease.)

I would suggest you get a nicotine patch and then try electronic cigarettes
You seem to be experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms. The next time you feel the very strong urge to smoke, get an electronic cigarette, yes I know you are trying to quit but you need to wean yourself off it slowly. Rather than take the real thing, take the electronic one, it does bring out smoke as well. So if you used to take like 6 sticks for instance every day, limit it to 3 and use the e-cigarette instead. The following day you can use the nicotine gum or patch. Gradually you will get off it. Slow and steady does it.

You will find that these substitutes will not usually give you the satisfaction you will usually get from lighting a stick but that is where self control comes in, you know what you are after so you need to stick to the regimen, it's like a woman looking to drop a few dress sizes, you substitute something for something, it might not satisfy your craving but the end result is what really matters.
Good luck and all the best.

Re: Help!!! I Have Been Sick Since I Quit Smoking. by Nobody: 6:15am On Jun 22, 2016
There was a time I was so addicted to smoking cigarettes that i was smoking two packs a day (40 sticks)

First thing i would do after waking up in the morning was to smoke 2 sticks.
After brushing my teeth, smoke another stick.

Preparing breakfast, smoke another.

During and after eating, smoke again.

Watching movie or football, smoke some more.

In fact 8 years ago, if i ate without smoking, i would be constipated.

I stopped smoking 3 years ago. How I stopped still baffles me.

Now the smell of cigarettes nauseates me.

@ Mr. Nobody;

As earlier responders have said you are going thru a withdrawal phase which i went through during the 3 or 4 times i tried quitting.

It's a pretty painful process but you need to remember that u will feel worse before u start to feel better.

Think of your health and your loved ones to help you stick to ur resolution about quitting.

I haven't smoked in 3 years and i have no desire to do so ever in my life.

The difference u will feel in ur lungs as time goes on are definitely worth quitting not to talk of avoiding the risk of lung cancer, etc. I used to smoke a lot and I know the difference I'm experiencing now so trust me, I know what I'm saying.

The benefits of quitting are endless so i emplore u to stick with it.

You can do it so don't give up.

Best wishes.

India MediTourism provides a very personalized service which is designed and revised to meet each patient's wishes and requirements. You will not be a round peg in a square hole. You will not be offered a "one size fits all" solution.

India MediTourism works directly for the patient and does not have a moral or practical conflict of interest with a health provider facility or Hospitals.

In India, Hospital’s mission is to provide treatment but they less focus on the auxiliary services or care, a patient may require beside his medical attention. The staffs of the hospitals are well trained but the workloads upon the staffs are very high, compelling them to handle many patients at a time. The system has shinned in recent decades to the point where access to services is difficult, standards have declined and care is fragmented and is less focused on the individual patient. Gaps in health management have developed, stress, frustration, expense, poor hospital service and poor medical care can result the outcome unsatisfactorily.

Optimal health is invaluable and hence India MediTourism comes into picture as an independent patient advocate assisting you to effectively utilize specialist consultations, Treatment and Stays in India.

This role does not encompass any decision making regarding medical care. It involves assisting you when you need to make such decisions and then ensures your wishes prevail.

Advantage of Healthcare Patient Advocate over Healthcare Provider?
The biggest benefit to patients with India MediTourism is the elimination of conflicts of interest. Whereas healthcare facilities like hospitals often provide coordinator to work with patients, those coordinators must adhere to the rules of their organization. Wherein India MediTourism is dedicated to work directly for patients and supports only the genuine needs of the patients.

India MediTourism keeps a close watch on your bills, eradicating unnecessary tests, overbilling and unnecessary consultations. The system of Hospital itself is very complex and access can be difficult that too if the patient is from foreign land. For some patients, just knowing where to find suitable facilities that are reasonable without compromising with quality is stressful. India MediTourism stands by your side, when you need the process of access and co-ordination of your management to be streamlined and simplified.

The language of healthcare is difficult and the delivery system often almost incomprehensible, frequently patients find themselves confused and excluded by a momentum and culture that assumes that patients are health literate and have the knowledge and energy to defend themselves. India MediTourism Patient’s advocate will assist the patient to acquire the knowledge that is fundamental to the countless informed decisions they will need to make.

India MediTourism Advocate will help you to help yourself.
If your health provider (hospital) is causing you anxiety in terms of care or progress, an India MediTourism Patient’s Advocate can meet with your provider and doctor to discuss your concerns.
India MediTourism coordinates with the hospital and doctor to ensure that your health management stays on track and you recover your satisfaction and your expectations are met. In case you are not satisfied with your treatment and need a temporarily pause in proceedings. India MediTourism’s Patient Advocate can request that the treatment be reviewed and seek a second opinion on your behalf. Depending on that opinion, the treatment may continue as before or it may become evident that there is a better alternative to proceed with. The use of second opinions is common in medical practice and when it is indicated, does not create a confronting situation.
