Benefits Of Wisdom (16) by SonofIssachar: 4:02am On Nov 13, 2013

When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom.
– Proverbs 11:2

Our reference passage today highlights another unique benefit of wisdom – it makes one humble. Unlike pride which requires little or no effort from anyone, and is a state of being that one can easily relapse into because of life’s acquisitions or privileges, it takes more than casual exertion of the mind to remain humble when endowed with privileges of life. It takes wisdom to maintain humility in a blessed state or exalted position.

Now, some people might have been forced into humility because of their impoverished background or the beatings they might have received in the course of living. But such individuals can easily become prideful when the table turns and they start to enjoy the comforts of life above measure. This is because pride in itself does not require much effort to assume, it naturally comes with the paddings of life.

But the humility that is fostered by wisdom is a continual exercise of the human will and reflexes trained by the regime of wisdom. Not that humility comes naturally to the wise; nay, wise people also have their struggles with pride, but they are schooled enough to put a rein on their impulses and put forward a measured restraint in their attitude, disposition and interaction with people, rather than strut in their walks or talk grandiloquently as prideful people would naturally do.

Humility is one of the special attributes that wisdom confers on the wise, and with it is insurance from shame and fall which come from pride.
