Anambra Poll: Lawyers Threaten To Sue Police If Clients Not Released by Ayekotoo(m): 10:41am On Nov 16, 2013
THE lawyer of the 181 arrested human rights activists on observer mission to Anambra State, Chief Soronnadi Njoku, has threatened to sue the Nigeria Police if his clients were not released to observe the governorship elections there today.
Briefing journalists Friday evening in Owerri, Njoku said the arrested persons were members of the “Equity and Justice” organisation on election observer mission to Anambra were surprised that after the arrested election observers had explained their mission, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Muhammad Musa Katsina, held on to detain them, brandishing them as election riggers.
Njoku insisted that his firm would prosecute the Police if they released the arrested persons, who were picked up at Disney Hotel in Owerri, after Saturday polls, adding that it would amount to gross infraction of their human rights.
Secretary of the coalition of the human rights group involved, Belo Adebayo, confirmed that they came in from Osogbo (Osun State) and Akure (Ondo State) for the purpose of the election, with various identifiable badges issued by the accreditation team of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), regretting that the Police arrested them on the guise that they had fake election materials, guns and ammunition.
Njoku challenged the Police to prove their allegation that the arrested persons were in possession of the posters of a political party and fake voters’ card materials.
