Answers

1. What is Islam?
The word "Islam" means peace and submission. Peace means to be at peace with yourself and your surroundings and submission means submission to the will of God. A broader meaning of the word "Islam" is to achieve peace by submitting to the will of God.

This is a unique religion with a name which signifies a moral attitude and a way of life. Judaism takes its name from the tribe of Juda, Christianity from Jesus Christ, Buddhism from Goutam Buddha and Hinduism from Indus River. However, Muslims derive their identity from the message of Islam, rather than the person of Muhammed (P), thus should not be called "Muhammadans".

2. Who is Allah?
Allah is the Arabic word for "one God". Allah is not God of Muslims only. He is God of all creations, because He is their Creator and Sustainer.

3. Who is a Muslim?
The word "Muslim" means one who submits to the will of God. This is done by declaring that "there is no god except one God and Muhammad is the messenger of God." In a broader sense, anyone who willingly submits to the will of God is a Muslim. Thus, all the prophets preceding the prophet Muhammad are considered Muslims. The Quran specifically mentions Abraham who lived long before Moses and Christ that, "he was not a Jew or a Christian but a Muslim," because, he had submitted to the will of God. Thus there are Muslims who are not submitting at all to the will of God and there are Muslims who are doing their best to live an Islamic life. One cannot judge Islam by looking at those individuals who have a Muslim name but in their actions, they are not living or behaving as Muslims. The extent of being a Muslim can be according to the degree to which one is submitting to the will of God, in his beliefs and his actions.

4. Who was Muhammad? (P)
In brief, Muhammad (Peace be upon him) was born in a noble tribe of Mecca in Arabia in the year 570 AD. His ancestry goes back to Prophet Ishmael (P), son of Prophet Abraham (P). His father died before his birth and his mother died when he was six. He did not attend a formal school since he was raised first by a nurse as it was the custom those days, and then by his grandfather and uncle. As a young man, he was known as a righteous person who used to meditate in a cave. At age 40, he was given the prophethood when the angel, Gabriel, appeared in the cave. Subsequently, the revelations came over 23 years and were compiled in the form of a book called the Quran which Muslims consider as the final and the last word of God. The Quran has been preserved, unchanged, in its original form and confirms the truth in the Torah, the psalms and the Gospel.

5. Do Muslims worship Muhammad? (P)
No. Muslims do not worship Muhammad (P) or any other prophets. Muslims believe in all prophets including Adam, Noah, Abraham, David, Solomon, Moses and Jesus. Muslims believe that Muhammad (P) was the last of the prophets. They believe that God alone is to be worshiped, not any human being.

6. What do Muslims think of Jesus? (P)
Muslims think highly of Jesus (P) and his worthy mother, Mary. The Quran tells us that Jesus was born of a miraculous birth without a father. "Lo! The likeness of Jesus with Allah is the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, and then He said unto him: Be and he is" (Quran 3.59). He was given many miracles as a prophet. These include speaking soon after his birth in defense of his mother's piety. God's other gifts to him included healing the blind and the sick, reviving the dead, making a bird out of clay and most importantly, the message he was carrying. These miracles were given to him by God to establish him as a prophet. According to the Quran, he was not crucified but was raised into Heaven. (Quran, Chapter Maryam)

7. Do Muslims have many sects?
Muslims have no sects. In Islam, there are two major schools of thought, the Shia and the Sunni. Both have many things in common. They follow the same book - Quran. They follow the same prophet Muhammad (P). Both offer their prayers five time a day. Both fast in the month of Ramadan. They both go for hajj, pilgrimage to Mecca. Those who follow Prophet Muhammad (P), in accordance with his sayings and actions, are called Sunni and those who in addition follow the sayings and views of Ali (Muhammad's son-in- law), as the rightful successor to Prophet Muhammad (P), are called Shia. Shia means a partisan (party of Ali) and it started more as a political party to help Ali in his conflict with his political adversaries. Most Shias live in Iran and Iraq while the rest of the Muslim world is mostly Sunni. Shias comprise about 16-percent of the Muslim population.

8. What are the pillars of Islam?
There are five major pillars of Islam which are the articles of faith. These pillars are 1) the belief (Iman) in one God and that Muhammad (P) is His messenger, 2) prayer (Salat) which are prescribed five times a day, 3) fasting (Siyam) which is required in the month of Ramadan, 4) charity (Zakat) which is the poor-due on the wealth of the rich and 5) hajj which is the pilgrimage to Mecca once in a lifetime if one can afford it physically and financially. All the pillars should be of equal height and strength in a building in order to give the building its due shape and proportions. It is not possible that one would do hajj without observing fasting or without practicing regular prayers. Now think of a building which has pillars only. It would not be called a building. In order to make it a building, it has to have a roof, it has to have walls, it has to have doors and windows. These things in Islam are the moral codes of Islam such as honesty, truthfulness, steadfastness and many other human moral qualities. Thus in order to be a Muslim, one should not only be practicing the pillars of Islam but should also have the highest possible attribute for being a good human being. Only then the building is completed and looks beautiful.

9. What is the purpose of worship in Islam?
The purpose of worship in Islam is to be God conscious. Thus the worship, whether it is prayer, fasting, or charity, is a means to achieve God consciousness so that when one becomes conscious of God, in thought and in action, he is in a better position to receive His bounties both in this world and the hereafter.

10. Do Muslims believe in the hereafter?
God is Just and manifest His justice, He established the system of accountability. Those who do good will be rewarded and those who do wrong will be punished accordingly. Thus, He created Heaven and Hell and there are admission criteria for both. Muslims believe that the present life is a temporary one. It is a test and if we pass the test, we will be given a life of permanent pleasure in the company of good people in Heaven.

11. Will the good actions of the non-believers be wasted?
No. The Quran clearly says that, "anyone who has an atom's worth of goodness will see it and anyone who has done an atom's worth of evil will also see it" (Quran 99:7-cool. By that it is meant that those who are non- believers but have done good will be rewarded in this world for their good deed. On the other hand, those who do good if they are Muslims, they will be rewarded not only in this world but also in the world hereafter. However, the final Judgment is up to God himself. (Quran 2:62)

12. What is the dress code for Muslims?
Islam emphasizes modesty. No person should be perceived as a sex object. There are certain guidelines both for men and women that their dress should neither be too thin nor too tight to reveal body forms. For men, they must at least cover the area from the knee to navel and for women, their dress should cover all areas except the hands and face. The veil is not essential.

13. What are the dietary prohibitions in Islam?
Muslims are told in the Quran not to eat pork or pork products, meat of the animals who died before being slaughtered or the carnivorous animals (as they eat dead animals), nor drink blood or intoxicants such as wine or use any illicit drugs.

14. What is Jihad?
The word "Jihad" means struggle, or to be specific, striving in the cause of God. Any struggle done in day-to-day life to please God can be considered Jihad. One of the highest levels of Jihad is to stand up to a tyrant and speak a word of truth. Control of the self from wrong doings is also a great Jihad. One of the forms of Jihad is to take up arms in defense of Islam or a Muslim country when Islam is attacked. This kind of Jihad has to be declared by the religious leadership or by a Muslim head of state who is following the Quran and Sunnah.

15. What is the Islamic Year?
The Islamic year started from the migration (Hijra) of Prophet Muhammad (P) from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD. It is a lunar year of 354 days. The first month is called Muharram. 1996 AD is in Islamic year 1416 AH.

16. What are the major Islamic festivals?
Idul Fitre, marks the end of fasting in the month of Ramadan and is celebrated with public prayers, feasts and exchange of gifts. Idul Adha marks the end of the Hajj or the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. After the public prayers, those who can afford, sacrifice a lamb or a goat to signify Prophet Abraham's obedience to God, shown by his readiness to sacrifice his son Ishmael.

17. What is Sharia?
Sharia is the comprehensive Muslim law derived form two sources, a) the Quran b) the Sunnah or traditions of Prophet Muhammad (P). It covers every aspect of daily individual and collective living. The purpose of Islamic laws are protection of individuals' basic human rights to include right to life, property, political and religious freedom and safeguarding the rights of women and minorities. The low crime rate in Muslim societies is due to the application of the Islamic laws.

18. Was Islam spread by the sword?
According to the Quran, "There is no compulsion in religion" (2:256), thus, no one can be forced to become a Muslim. While it is true that in many places where Muslim armies went to liberate people or the land, they did carry the sword as that was the weapon used at that time. However, Islam did not spread by the sword because in many places where there are Muslims now, in the Far East like Indonesia, in China, and many parts of Africa, there are no records of any Muslim armies going there. To say that Islam was spread by the sword would be to say that Christianity was spread by guns, F-16's and atomic bombs, etc., which is not true. Christianity spread by the missionary works of Christians. Ten-percent of all Arabs are Christians. The "Sword of Islam" could not convert all the non-Muslim minorities in Muslim countries. In India, where Muslims ruled for 700 years, they are still a minority. In the USA., Islam is the fastest growing religion and has 6 million followers without any sword around.

19. Does Islam promote violence and terrorism?
No. Islam is religion of peace and submission and stresses on the sanctity of human life. A verse in the Quran says, [Chapter 5, verse 32], that "anyone who saves one life, it is as if he has saved the whole of mankind and anyone who has killed another person (except in lieu of murder or mischief on earth) it is as if he has killed the whole of mankind." Islam condemns all the violence which happened in the Crusades, in Spain, in WW II, or by acts of people like the Rev. Jim Jones, David Koresh, Dr. Baruch Goldstein, or the atrocities committed in Bosniaby the Christian Serbs. Anyone who is doing violence is not practicing his religion at that time. However, sometimes violence is a human response of oppressed people as it happens in Palestine. Although this is wrong, they think of this as a way to get attention. There is a lot of terrorism and violence in areas where there is no Muslim presence. For example, in Ireland, South Africa, Latin America, and Sri Lanka. Sometimes the violence is due to a struggle between those who have with those who do not have, or between those who are oppressed with those who are oppressors. We need to find out why people become terrorists. Unfortunately, the Palestinians who are doing violence are called terrorists, but not the armed Israeli settlers when they do the same sometimes even against their own people. As it turned out to be in the Oklahoma City bombing, sometime Muslims are prematurely blamed even if the terrorism is committed by non-Muslims. Sometimes those who want Peace and those who oppose Peace can be of the same religion.

20. What is "Islamic Fundamentalism"?
There is no concept of "Fundamentalism" in Islam. The western media has coined this term to brand those Muslims who wish to return to the basic fundamental principles of Islam and mould their lives accordingly. Islam is a religion of moderation and a practicing God fearing Muslim can neither be a fanatic nor an extremist.

21. Does Islam promote polygamy?
No, polygamy in Islam is a permission not an injunction. Historically, all the prophets except Jesus, who was not married, had more than one wife. For Muslim men to have more than one wife is a permission which is given to them in the Quran, not to satisfy lust, but for the welfare of the widows and the orphans of the wars. In the pre-Islamic period, men used to have many wives. One person had 11 wives and when he became Muslim, he asked the Prophet Muhammad (P), "What should I do with so many wives?" and he said, "Divorce all except the four." The Quran says, "you can marry 2 or 3 and up to 4 women if you can be equally just with each of them" (4:3). Since it is very difficult to be equally just with all wives, in practice, most of the Muslim men do not have more than one wife. Prophet Muhammad (P) himself from age 24 to 50 was married to only one woman, Khadija. In the western society, some men who have one wife have many extramarital affairs. Thus, a survey was published in "USA. Today" (April 4, 1988 Section D) which asked 4,700 mistresses what they would like their status to be. They said that "they preferred being a second wife rather than the 'other woman' because they did not have the legal rights, nor did they have the financial equality of the legally married wives, and it appeared that they were being used by these men."

22. Does Islam oppress women?
No. On the contrary, Islam elevated the status of women 1,400 years ago by giving them the right to divorce, the right to have financial independence and support and the right to be identified as dignified women (Hijab) when in the rest of the world, including Europe, women had no such rights. Women are equal to men in all acts of piety (Quran 33:32). Islam allows women to keep their maiden name after marriage, their earned money and spend it as they wish, and ask men to be their protector as women on the street can be molested. Prophet Muhammad (P) told Muslim men, "the best among you is the one who is best to his family." Not Islam, but some Muslim men, do oppress women today. This is because of their cultural habits or their ignorance about their religion. Female Genital Mutilations has nothing to do with Islam. It is a pre Islamic African Custom, practiced by non Muslims including coptic Christians as well.

23. Is Islam intolerant of other religious minorities?
Islam recognizes the rights of the minority. To ensure their welfare and safety, Muslim rulers initiated a tax (Jazia) on them. Prophet Muhammad (P) forbade Muslim armies to destroy churches and synagogues. Caliph Umer did not even allow them to pray inside a church. Jews were welcomed and flourished in Muslim Spain even when they were persecuted in the rest of Europe. They consider that part of their history as the Golden Era. In Muslim countries, Christians live in prosperity, hold government positions and attend their church. Christian missionaries are allowed to establish and operate their schools and hospitals. However, the same religious tolerance is not always available to Muslim minorities as seen in the past during Spanish inquisition and the crusades, or as seen now by the events in Bosnia, Israel and India. Muslims do recognize that sometimes the actions of a ruler does not reflect the teachings of his religion.

24. What is the Islamic view on-
a. Dating and Premarital sex:
Islam does not approve of intimate mixing of the sexes, and forbids premarital or extramarital sex. Islam encourages marriage as a shield to such temptations and as a means of having mutual love, mercy and peace.

b. Abortion:
Islam considers abortion as murder and does not permit it except to save the mother's life (Quran 17:23-31, 6:15 1).

c. Homosexuality and AIDS:
Islam categorically opposes homosexuality and considers it a sin. However, Muslim physicians are advised to care for AIDS patients with compassion just as they would for other patients.

d. Euthanasia and Suicide:
Islam is opposed to both suicide and euthanasia. Muslims do not believe in heroic measures to prolong the misery in a terminally ill patient.

e. Organ transplantation:
Islam stresses upon saving lives (Quran 5:32); thus, transplantation in general would be considered permissible provided a donor consent is available. The sale of the organ is not allowed.

25. How should Muslims treat Jews and Christians?
The Quran calls them "People of the Book", i.e., those who received Divine scriptures before Muhammad (P). Muslims are told to treat them with respect and justice and do not fight with them unless they initiate hostilities or ridicule their faith. The Muslims ultimate hope is that they all will join them in worshipping one God and submit to His will.

"Say (O Muhammad): O people of the Book (Jews and Christians) come to an agreement between us and you, that we shall worship none but Allah, and that we shall take no partners with Him, and none of us shall take others for Lords beside Allah. And if they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we are those who have surrendered (unto Him)." (Quran 3:64)

What about Hindus, Bahai, Buddhists and members of other religions?
They should also be treated with love, respect, and understanding to make them recipients of Invitations to Islam.

TOP TEN MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT ISLAM

MISCONCEPTION #1:
Muslims are violent, terrorists and/or extremists.

This is the biggest misconception in Islam, no doubt resulting from
the constant stereotyping and bashing the media gives Islam. When a
gunman attacks a mosque in the name of Judaism, a Catholic IRA
guerrilla sets off a bomb in an urban area, or Serbian Orthodox
militiamen rape and kill innocent Muslim civilians, these acts are not
used to stereotype an entire faith. Never are these acts attributed
to the religion of the perpetrators. Yet how many times have we heard
the words 'Islamic, Muslim fundamentalist. etc.' linked with violence.

Politics in so called "Muslim countries" may or may not have any
Islamic basis. Often dictators and politicians will use the name of
Islam for their own purposes. One should remember to go to the source
of Islam and separate what the true religion of Islam says from what
is portrayed in the media. Islam literally means 'submission to God'
and is derived from a root word meaning 'peace'.

Islam may seem exotic or even extreme in the modern world. Perhaps
this is because religion doesn't dominate everyday life in the West,
whereas Islam is considered a 'way of life' for Muslims and they make
no division between secular and sacred in their lives. Like
Christianity, Islam permits fighting in self-defense, in defense of
religion, or on the part of those who have been expelled forcibly
from their homes. It lays down strict rules of combat which include
prohibitions against harming civilians and against destroying crops,
trees and livestock.

NOWHERE DOES ISLAM ENJOIN THE KILLING OF INNOCENTS, The Quran says:
"Fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not
transgress limits. God does not love transgressors." (Quran 2:190)
"If they seek peace, then seek you peace. And trust in God for He is
the One that heareth and knoweth all things." (Quran 8:61) War,
therefore, is the last resort, and is subject to the rigorous
conditions laid down by the sacred law. The term 'jihad' literally
means 'struggle'. Muslims believe that there are two kinds of jihad.
The other 'jihad' is the inner struggle of the soul which everyone
wages against egotistic desires for the sake of attaining inner
peace.

MISCONCEPTION #2:
Islam oppresses women.

The image of the typical Muslim woman wearing the veil and forced to
stay home and forbidden to drive is all too common in most peoples
thoughts. Although some Muslim countries may have laws that oppress
women, this should not be seen as coming from Islam. Many of these
countries do not rule by any kind of Shari'ah (Islamic law) and
introduce their own cultural standpoints on the issue of gender
equity.

Islam on the other hand gives men and women different roles and equity
between the two is laid down in the Quran and the example of the
Prophet (peace be upon him). Islam sees a woman, whether single or
married, as an individual in her own right, with the right to own and
dispose of her property and earnings. A marriage gift is given by
the groom to the bride for her own personal use, and she keeps her
own family name rather than taking her husband's. Both men and women
are expected to dress in a way that is modest and dignified. The
Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: "The most perfect in faith
amongst believers is he who is best in manner and kindest to his
wife."

Violence of any kind towards women and forcing them against their
will for anything is not allowed. A Muslim marriage is a simple, legal
agreement in which either partner is free to include conditions.
Marriage customs thus vary widely from country to country. Divorce is
not common, although it is acceptable as a last resort. According to
Islam, a Muslim girl cannot be forced to marry against her will: her
parents simply suggest young men they think may be suitable.

MISCONCEPTION #3:
Muslims worship a different God.

Allah is simply the Arabic word for God. Allah for Muslims is the
greatest and most inclusive of the Names of God, it is an Arabic word
of rich meaning, denoting the one and only God and ascribing no
partners to Him. It is exactly the same word which the Jews, in
Hebrew, use for God (eloh), the word which Jesus Christ used in
Aramaic when he prayed to God. God has an identical name in Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam; Allah is the same God worshiped by Muslims,
Christians and Jews. Muslims believe that Allah's sovereignty is to
be acknowledged in worship and in the pledge to obey His teaching and
commandments, conveyed through His messengers and prophets who were
sent at various times and in many places throughout history.
However, it should be noted that God in Islam is One and Only. He,
the Exalted, does not get tired, does not have a son ie Jesus or
have associates, nor does He have human-like attributions as found in
other faiths.

MISCONCEPTION #4:
Islam was spread by the sword and intolerant of other faiths.

Many social studies textbooks for students show the image of an Arab
horseman carrying a sword in one hand and the Quran in the other
conquering and forcibly converting. This, though, is not a correct
portrayal of history. Islam has always given respect and freedom of
religion to all faiths. The Quran says: "God forbids you not, with
regards to those who fight you not for [your] faith nor drive you out
of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them; for God
loveth those who are just. 60:cool

Freedom of religion is laid down in the Quran itself: "There is no
compulsion (or coercion) in the religion (Islam). The right
direction is distinctly clear from error". (2:256) Christian
missionary, T.W. Arnold had this opinion on his study of the question
of the spread of Islam: ", of any organized attempt to force the
acceptance of Islam on the non-Muslim population, or of any
systematic persecution intended to stamp out the Christian religion,
we hear nothing. Had the caliphs chosen to adopt either course of
action, they might have swept away Christianity as easily as
Ferdinand and Isabella drove Islam out of Spain, or Louis XIV made
Protestanism , "

It is a function of Islamic law to protect the privileged status of
minorities, and this is why non-Muslim places of worship have
flourished all over the Islamic world. History provides many
examples of Muslim tolerance towards other faiths: when the caliph
Omar entered Jerusalem in the year 634, Islam granted freedom of
worship to all religious communities in the city. Proclaiming to the
inhabitants that their lives, and property were safe, and that their
places of worship would never be taken from them, he asked the
Christian patriarch Sophronius to accompany him on a visit to all the
holy places. Islamic law also permits non-Muslim minorities to set up
their own courts, which implement family laws drawn up by the
minorities themselves. The life and property of all citizens in an
Islamic state are considered sacred whether the person is Muslim or
not.

Racism is not a part of Islam, the Quran speaks only of human equality
and how all peoples are equal in the sight of God. "O mankind! We
created you from a single soul, male and female, and made you into
nations and tribes, so that you may come to know one another. Truly,
the most honored of you in God's sight is the greatest of you in
piety. God is All-Knowing, All- Aware. (49:13)

MISCONCEPTION #5:
All Muslims are Arabs

The Muslim population of the world is around 1.2 billion. 1 out of 5
people in the world is a Muslim. They are a vast range of races,
nationalities, and cultures from around the globe--from the
Phillipines to Nigeria--they are united by their common Islamic faith.
Only about 18% live in the Arab world and the largest Muslim
community is in Indonesia. Most Muslims live east of Pakistan. 30%
of Muslims live in the Indian subcontinent, 20% in Sub-Saharan Africa,
17% in Southeast Asia, 18% in the Arab world, and 10% in the Soviet
Union and China. Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan make up 10% of the
non-Arab Middle East. Although there are Muslim minorities in almost
every area, including Latin America and Australia, they are most
numerous in Russia and its newly independent states, India and
central Africa. There are about 6 million Muslims in the United
States

MISCONCEPTION #6:
The Nation of Islam is a Muslim group.

Islam and the so called "Nation of Islam'" are two different
religions. NOI is more of a political organization since its members
are not limited to a single faith. Muslims consider this group to be
just one of many cults using the name of Islam for their own gain.
The only thing common between them is the jargon, the language used
by both. "The Nation of Islam" is a misnomer; this religion should be
called Farrakhanism, after the name of its propogator, Louis Farrakhan.

Islam and Farakhanism differ in many fundamental ways. For example,
Farakhan followers believe in racism and that the 'black man' was the
original man and therefore superior, while in Islam there is no
racism and everyone is considered equal in the sight of God, the only
difference being in one's piety. There are many other theological
examples that show the 'Nation's teachings have little to do with
true Islam. There are many groups in America who claim to represent
Islam and call their adherents Muslims.

Any serious student of Islam has a duty to investigate and find the
true Islam. The only two authentic sources which bind every Muslim
are 1. the Quran and 2. authentic or sound Hadith. Any teachings under
the label of "Islam" which contradict or at variance with the direct
understanding of fundamental beliefs and practices of Islam form the
Quran and authentic Hadith should be rejected and such a religion
should be considered a Pseudo-Islamic Cult. In America there are many
pseudo-Islamic cults, Farrakhanism being one of them. An honest
attitude on the part of such cults should be not to call themselves
Muslims and their religion Islam. such an example of honesty is
Bahaism which is an off-shoot of Islam but Bahais do not call
themselves Muslims nor their religion, Islam. In fact Bahaism is not
Islam just as Farrakhanism is not Islam.

MISCONCEPTION #7:
All Muslim men marry four wives.

The religion of Islam was revealed for all societies and all times and
so accommodates widely differing social requirements. Circumstances
may warrant the taking of another wife but the right is granted,
according to the Quran, only on condition that the husband is
scrupulously fair. No woman can be forced into this kind of marriage
if they do not wish it, and they also have the right to exclude it in
their marriage contract.

Polygamy is neither mandatory, nor encouraged, but merely permitted.
Images of "sheikhs with harems" are not consistent with Islam, as a
man is only allowed at most four wives only if he can fulfill the
stringent conditions of treating each fairly and providing each with
separate housing etc. Permission to practice polygamy is not
associated with mere satisfaction of passion. It is rather
associated with compassion toward widows and orphans. It was the
Quran that limited and put conditions on the practice of polygamy
among the Arabs, who had as many as ten or more wives and considered
them "property".

It is both honest and accurate to say that it is Islam that regulated
this practice, limited it, made it more humane, and instituted equal
rights and status for all wives. What the Qur'anic decrees amount to,
taken together is discouragement of polygamy unless necessity for it
exists. It is also evident that the general rule in Islam is monogamy
and not polygamy. It is a very tiny percentage of Muslims that
practice it over the world. However, permission to practice limited
polygamy is only consistent with Islam's realistic view of the nature
of man and woman and of various social needs, problems and cultural
variations.

The question is, however far more than the inherent flexibility of
Islam; it also is the frank and straightforward approach of Islam in
dealing with practical problems. Rather than requiring hypocritical
and superficial compliance, Islam delves deeper into the problems of
individuals and societies, and provides for legitimate and clean
solutions which are far more beneficial than would be the case if they
were ignored. There is no doubt that the second wife legally married
and treated kindly is better off than a mistress without any legal
rights or expermanence.

MISCONCEPTION #8:
Muslims are a barbaric, backward people.

Among the reasons for the rapid and peaceful spread of Islam was the
simplicity of its doctrine-Islam calls for faith in only one God
worthy of worship. It also repeatedly instructs man to use his
powers of intelligence and observation. Within a few years, great
civilizations and universities were flourishing, for according to the
Prophet (pbuh), 'seeking knowledge is an obligation for every Muslim
man and woman'.

The synthesis of Eastern and Western ideas and of new thought with
old, brought about great advances in medicine, mathematics, physics,
astronomy, geography, architecture, art, literature, and history.
Many crucial systems such as algebra, the Arabic numerals, and also
the concept of the zero (vital to the advancement of mathematics),
were transmitted to medieval Europe from Islam. Sophisticated
instruments which were to make possible the European voyages of
discovery were developed, including the astrolabe, the quadrant and
good navigational maps.

MISCONCEPTION #9:
Muhammad was the founder of Islam and Muslims worship him.

Muhammad(pbuh) was born in Mecca in the year 570. Since his father
died before his birth, and his mother shortly afterwards, he was
raised by his uncle from the respected tribe of Quraysh. As he grew
up, he became known for his truthfulness, generosity and sincerity, so
that he was sought after for his ability to arbitrate in disputes.
The historians describe him as calm and meditative. Muhammad (pbuh)
was of a deeply religious nature, and had long detested the decadence
of his society.

It became his habit to meditate from time to time in the Cave of Hira
near Mecca. At the age of 40, while engaged in a meditative retreat,
Muhammad(pbuh) received his first revelation from God through the
Angel Gabriel. This revelation, which continued for 23 years is
known as the Quran. As soon as he began to recite the words he heard
from Gabriel, and to preach the truth which God had revealed to him,
he and his small group of followers suffered bitter persecution,
which grew so fierce that in the year 622 God gave them the command to
emigrate.

This event, the Hijra 'migration', in which they left Mecca for the
city of Medina, marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar. After
several years, the Prophet and his followers were able to return to
Mecca, where they forgave their enemies and established Islam
definitively. Before the Prophet saw dies at the age of 63, the
greater part of Arabia was Muslim, and within a century of his death
Islam had spread to Spain in the West and as far East as China. He
died with less than 5 possessions to his name.

While Muhammad (pbuh) was chosen to deliver the message, he is not
considered the "founder" of Islam, since Muslims consider Islam to be
the same divine guidance sent to all peoples before. Muslims believe
all the prophets from Adam, Noah, Moses, Jesus etc. were all sent
with divine guidance for their peoples. Every prophet was sent to his
own people, but Muhammad(pbuh) was sent to all of mankind. Muhammad
is the last and final messenger sent to deliver the message of Islam.
Muslims revere and honor him (pbuh) for all he went through and his
dedication, but they do not worship him. "O Prophet, verily We have
sent you as a witness and a bearer of glad tidings and a warner and
as one who invites unto God by His leave and as an illuminating
lamp."(33:45-6)

MISCONCEPTION #10:
Muslims don't believe in Jesus or any other prophets.

Muslims respect and revere Jesus, upon him be peace, and await his
Second Coming. They consider him one of the greatest of God's
messengers to mankind. A Muslim never refers to him simply as
'Jesus', but always adds the phrase 'upon him be peace' (abbreviated
as (u) here). The Quran confirms his virgin birth (a chapter of the
Quran is entitled 'Mary'), and Mary is considered the purest woman in
all creation. The Quran describes the Annunciation as follows:

"Behold!" the Angel said, "God has chosen you, and purified you, and
chosen you above the women of all nations. O Mary, God gives you
good news of a word from Him whose name shall be the Messiah, Jesus
son of Mary, honored in this world and the Hereafter, and one of those
brought near to God. He shall speak to the people from his cradle and
in maturity, and shall be of the righteous." She said: "O my Lord!
How shall I have a son when no man has touched me?" He said: "Even
so; God creates what He will. When He decrees a thing, He says to it,
"Be!" and it is" (Quran 3:42-47)

Jesus (u) was born miraculously through the same power, which had
brought Adam (u) into being without a father: "Truly, the likeness of
Jesus with God is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust,
and then said to him, 'Be!' and he was." (3:59) During his prophetic
mission Jesus (u) performed many miracles. The Quran tells us that he
said: " I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I make for you
out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breath into it
and it becomes a bird by God's leave. And I heal the blind, and the
lepers, and I raise the dead by God's leave." (3:49) Neither Muhammad
(pbuh) not Jesus (u) came to change the basic doctrine of the brief in
One God brought by earlier prophets, but to confirm and renew it.

In the Quran Jesus (u) is reported as saying that he came: "To attest
the law which was before me. And to make lawful to you part of what
was forbidden you; I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so
fear God and obey Me. (3:50) The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said:
"Whoever believes there is no god but God, alone without partner,
that Muhammad (pbuh) is His messenger, that Jesus is the servant and
messenger of God, His word breathed into Mary and a spirit emanating
from Him, and that Paradise and Hell are true, shall be received by
God into Heaven. "(Hadith related by Bukhari).

Re: Most Frequently Asked Questions About Islam by littleb(m): 8:08am On Oct 11, 2008
TAUHID ( ISLAMIC MONOTHEISM )
Tauhid ( Islamic Monotheism ) has three aspects :

(A) Oneness of the Lordship of Allah ; Tauhid-ar-Rububiyah : To
believe that there is only one Lord for all the universe its
Creator, Organizer, Planner, Sustainer, and the Giver of
security, etc., and that is Allah.

(B) Oneness of the Worship of Allah ; Tauhid-al-Uluhiya : To
believe that none has the right to be worshiped [ e.g. praying,
invoking, asking for help (from the unseen), swearing,
slaughtering sacrifices, giving charity, fasting, pilgrimage,
etc. ] but Allah.

(C) Oneness of the Names and the Qualities of Allah ;
Tauhid-al-Asma was-Sifat : To believe that :

(i) We must not name or qualify Allah except with what He or His
Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), has named or qualified
Him,

(ii) None can be named or qualified with the Names or
Qualifications of Allah ; e.g. AL-Kareem,

(iii) We must confirm all of Allah's Qualification which Allah
has stated in His Book (the Qur'an) or mentioned throuhg His
Messenger ( Muhammad ) without changing them or ignoring them
completely or twisting the meanings or giving resemblance to any
of the craeted things [ e.g. Allah is present over His Throne as
mentioned in the Qur'an (20:5) :- " The Most Beneficent (Allah)
Istawa (rose over) the (Mighty) Throne " over the seventh heaven
; and He only comes down over the first (nearest) heaven to us
on the day of Arafat (the 9th of Dhul-Hijja), and also during
the last third part of the night as mentioned by the Prophet
Muhammad (peace be upon him), but He is with us by His Knowledge
only, not by His Personal-Self (Bi-Dhatihi).

Also Allah said : " There is nothing like unto Him and He is
the All-Hearer, the All-Seer " (42:11)

This holy Verse confirms the quality of hearing and the quality
of sight for Allah without resemblance to others, and likewise
He also said :

" To one whom I have created with Both My Hands," (38:75)

" The Hand of Allah is over their hands " (48:10)

This confirms two Hands for Allah, but there is no similarity
for them. This is the Faith of all true believers, and was the
Faith of all the Prophets of Allah, from Noah, Abraham, Moses,
and Christ till the last of the Prophets , Muhammad (peace be
upon them all) . [ It is not like as some people think that
Allah is present everywhere--here, there and even inside the
braests of men ] .

# These three aspects of TAUHID are included in the meaning of
La ilaha
ill-Allah ( none has the right to be worshiped but Allah ) .

# It is also essential to follow Allah's Messenger, Muhammad
(peace be upon him) : Wajub al-Itteba'a and it is a part of
Tauhid-al-Uluhiyah .

This is included in the meaning, " I testify that Muhammad
(peace be upon him) is Allah's Messenger," and this means, "
None has the right to be followed after Allah's Book (the
Qur'an), but Allah's Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him)," .

Allah said :

" And whatsoever the Messenger ( Muhammad) gives you, take it,
and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain from it " (59:7) .

" Say ( O Muhammad to mankind ), If you (really) love Allah then
follow me [ i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Qur'an
and the Sunnah (legal ways of the prophet Muhammad peace be upon
him), ], Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. "
(3:31) .
Re: Most Frequently Asked Questions About Islam by littleb(m): 12:45pm On Apr 11, 2009
1. "Why do women cover the way they do. I mean doesn't it get a bit hot under there? And why do they have to wear those dowdy colours – it must make mornings so boring for them?"

Ans
Islam does not deny sexual attraction but it insists this should remain a precious and personal matter between husbands and wives. Sexual attraction is not the aim in public life and the public space can do without sexual tensions. Islam therefore teaches that both men and women should dress modestly (hijab in Arabic). Men should cover from the navel to the knee and women cover their bodies so that their figure is not revealing and in most cases this includes the hair as well (no more bad hair days!).

The extent of covering is different for men and women because men and women think and behave slightly differently. We can debate how much of a society’s culture and attitudes are nurtured and how much are truly natural, i.e. hard-wired into our genes. It is a scientific fact however that men’s and women’s brains do work differently.

That’s why, for example, young schoolgirls on average do better than boys, boys and girls, in general, like different toys and in terms of attraction, men generally respond more to visual stimuli and generally women, to emotional stimuli. It is no fluke that top shelves are lined with men’s mags and not women’s. Market forces don’t lie. So we see that in most cultures men and women dress differently and women’s clothing is more covering – even on the beach where there is not much dressing going on at all, this is still true!

Many Muslim women find comfort in the hijab because they feel that things have got out of hand nowadays. Women are pressured into feeling they have to look ‘glamorous’ i.e. attractive, to be noticed in a man’s world. Why are women cultured into tolerating a half-hour ritual of make-up every morning that men don’t have to bother with? There is a constant pressure to dress fashionably, forcing women to forever scout the high streets buying the latest styles, far beyond genuine need.

Muslim women are not commanded to be frumpy! There are no specific restrictions about the colour of dress but some choose to wear plainer colours out of modesty. However this does not stop them from dressing elegantly. A few women choose to cover their faces. However odd that might seem to many people, if they really want to, then that should be their right and obviously passports are an exception. After all, to a lot of people certain hairstyles and facial piercing can look odd too, but we wouldn’t want it banned! As for it getting to hot, in the British climate that is quite unlikely!

It is important to understand that in Britain hijab is definitely not a sign of male dominance. Muslim women are donning the hijab out of choice, often despite protestation from their fathers or husbands. They see it as a spiritual act, a reflection of their faith and a means of attaining closeness to God. Hijab also gives them confidence. They feel people are no longer judging them by their figures but are now freed to respect them for their minds rather than for their bodies.

It is sad that hijab is turned into a political game. Muslim women are not saying, “I want to convert you or force you to wear one.” All they’re doing is what they feel their religion is asking from them - hijab is a very brave and personal decision that a woman makes. We should support them for their courage, not make life harder for them.

2. Why are Muslim girls and boys forced into marriage?

Ans
From an Islamic point of view, boys and girls should never be forced into marriage. Islam gave women and men the right to reject a marriage proposal free from pressure. In fact, in Islamic marriage law, the girl’s consent is a condition puppets.jpgfor the marriage contract to be legal - otherwise the contract is void. It is reported that a young woman came to the Prophet Muhammad and complained that her father had forced her to marry a man without her agreement. The Prophet annulled her marriage. On a different occasion, a guardian who had adopted an orphan girl came to the Prophet, and said that he received two offers for her hand in marriage, one from a rich man and one from a poor man. He added that he likes the rich man, but that the girl likes the poor man. The Prophet answered, “For those in love we don't see anything better than marriage”.

From 1400 years ago, Islam has given men and women the right to divorce if the marriage really doesn’t work out. Women can file for divorce just on the grounds that they don’t love their husbands.

3. Why don't Muslims go to pubs much?

Ans
Cultures across the world have different attitudes to alcohol. It’s hard to deny that a pint or two will make people more cheerful and sociable. The Qur’an mentions that there is some good in alcohol, but on balance the harm outweighs the benefit – and we know that alcohol is behind so many of the crimes, accidents, domestic abuse and health problems in society.

So in the Qur’an Muslims are asked to avoid alcohol altogether. Many Muslims believe this rule extends to going to places where drink is widely consumed e.g. pubs and bars.

But it would be wrong to think that only Muslims avoid pubs. Many religious people of other faiths also avoid them. Even generally, a lot of people are very selective about which pubs they go to, and many other simply don’t like pubs altogether.

4. How can Muslims possibly manage to pray five times a day? Don’t they get tired of it?

Ans
The daily prayers form one of the five pillars of Islamic worship. So praying is an essential part of a Muslim’s life. Muslims do not see praying as a chore. On the contrary, they see it as a way of keeping up their relationship with God. Many Muslims feel refreshed and recharged after a prayer.

The five daily prayers also help to enhance a Muslim’s time-management, as they can organise their day around the time between prayers. Islam lays emphasis on the punctuality in offering prayers so that a regularity and rhythm is established. The prayers themselves take only about five minutes.

Muslims do not see the commandments as unreasonable. When ill, it is up to the person to consider how much they can manage. On journeys they can shorten their prayers and group some of them together to save time. However, they should still be performed, to keep in mind the prayer’s importance in the life of a Muslim.

5. Why are Muslims always so radical?

Ans
In four words: Muslims are not radical! In fact, because of the simple, pure life they are asked to lead, ordinary Muslims can, if anything, appear more plain than radical!!

Terms such as ‘fundamentalist’ and ‘Islamist’ are not Islamic terms, but have been created by the media and western ‘experts’ to pigeonhole people that they don’t understand. There may be a few zealous young men who do extreme actions in the name of Islam, but as far as the majority of Muslims are concerned, they are going against Islamic teachings.

Muslims are noted for the passion with which they hold to their faith and in the sort of age that we live, this in itself can appear ‘radically’ different. But when people learn that Islam is a practical and tolerant religion, they are reassured that a Muslim’s becoming ‘religious’ does not make him or her a threat.

If the word ‘radical’ is taken to mean ‘wanting change’ then indeed Muslims do want change – a change for the better. Muslims get irritated when they see injustice and deprivation, because Islam teaches people to strive for justice and social improvement - but the overwhelming majority of Muslims know that the way to achieve this is through charity and development, not violence.

6. Why does Islam ask all its followers to fight jihad? Surely that can’t do much good for community relations?

Ans
The noble concept of Jihad is horribly misunderstood. The word actually means ‘struggle’ – NOT Holy War!!

Islam asks its followers to first engage in their own internal, spiritual jihad. So jihad is mainly to do with fighting vigorously against one’s weaknesses and lower instincts, e.g. greed, laziness and impatience. Through this kind of jihad, the Muslim should become even more suited to serving society. Rather than worsening community relations, this should enhance them.

However, there is a “lesser” type of jihad, which involves the struggle for justice and freedom. In extreme cases where there is no peaceful alternative, this might even require war, like the idea of a ‘Just War’ in Christianity. Even then, Islam demands very strict ‘rules of engagement’: for example, not harming women, children, non-combatants, places of religious worship, e.g. temples and churches, property and even trees and wildlife. So clearly terrorism cannot be called jihad.

It is a common myth that Islam was spread by the sword. Yet the Holy Quran states clearly "Let there be no compulsion in religion". Faith must come though inner conviction and free choice, not from outside force. Islam spread through the spirituality and inspirational example that early Muslims displayed.

7. Why aren't girls allowed out in the evenings? It must be so boring cooped up in the kitchen?

Ans
In society generally, there are some parents who are very relaxed and think of their children as independent adults from the age of 12 or younger: free to go out and act as they please and ready to take responsibility for their actions. Yet some parents are more inclined to feel that their teenage children are still vulnerable to peer pressure, and so are concerned and careful about the friends they keep, in case they get caught up in the wrong crowd and end up making serious mistakes that jeopardise their whole future.

The Muslims of Britain come from all cultural backgrounds and as with any community, you will find a similar variation in the way parents approach their teenage children. Some parents will have made a robust effort to get their children interested in wholesome extra-curricular activities such as sports, etc.

Like many parents these days, religious Muslim parents are also likely to be anxious about the sort of company and ways their teenage kids spend their spare time, as these precious years not only mark a transition into adulthood but are also critical in shaping the prospects of young persons entire future life. Parents are quite likely therefore to be careful about the way their children, whether girls or boys, spend those precious hours of their spare time. Islam does not allow relationships before marriage, and as hormones are on high charge around that age, religious children and their parents will be careful to avoid situations that could lead to serious relationships developing.
horsey.jpgAlthough there is a popular tendency these days to imagine that a young person has to experience a number of relationships before they mature enough to recognise the 'right one', there are plenty of people that never find the 'right one' and plenty more that decide that their 'first one' was the 'right one'. Islam therefore teaches that the success of a relationship is to be found in the faithfulness and love that is poured into that relationship and that is why countless semi or even totally arranged marriages still manage to hold together with the glue of mutual love and respect.

But does this mean that kids can’t have fun? Of course not! A lot of Muslim teenagers like teenagers of all backgrounds find fun in a whole host of decent, wholesome pursuits. As for the kitchen, well if Muslims were to follow the example of Prophet Muhammad’s household, it's the boys who would be in the kitchen!

8. What’s the big deal with Halal food – surely a tandoori chicken is still a tandoori chicken whether you call it Halal, organic or kosher? And isn’t the halal method cruel?

Ans
Halal is an Arabic word which means permitted or lawful. Meat can only be called Halal when it has been prepared according to the strict ethical requirements of kindness that Islam demands. The Islamic method of slaughter is called zabh.

It is never comfortable to think of our steaks and burgers as once being cute animals grazing blissfully in green fields. It is even more uncomfortable to think of the trauma these poor animals might experience at the time of slaughter.

Islam puts a strong emphasis on kindness to animals. The Prophet Muhammad is reported to have said, "All creatures are God's dependants, and the most beloved to God, among men, is he who does good to God's dependants".

So even before zabh, according to the directions of Prophet Muhammad, the animal has to be treated kindly, e.g. well fed, watered and comforted so it does not feel panic. The animal must not be allowed to see either the knife or any other slaughtered animals. The blade has to be sharpened so that with a swift stroke, before the animal realises any pain, blood has drained from its brain and it has lost consciousness.

Prayers are recited during this process and this shows respect to the animal, reminding us that its life was taken only because of need, not for fun, and that God watches us and we will have to account for any distress we might have caused the animal.

Scientific studies (using EEG recorders) have confirmed that there is less distress to animals with the zabh method than conventional factory techniques where there is a recognised failure rate. So whilst ‘organic’ suggests the animal had a non-traumatic life, ‘halal’ should confirm that it had a non-traumatic death.

9. Why don’t Muslims just call themselves Pakistanis, like Hindus usually call themselves Indian, etc.?

Ans
We all have multiple identities that describe the different ways that we each see ourselves – our religion, our ethnicity, our nationality, and our culture. For many Muslims, their ethnic identity is not as important as their religious identity; so many prefer to call themselves Muslims or British Muslims.

Islam is a universal religion, separate from national identities and cultures. It was revealed for the whole of humankind. God states in the Quran, "Truly, this is no less than a message to (all) the worlds”. So even in Birmingham there are Muslims who migrated not only from Pakistan, but many other parts of the world, e.g. Bangladesh, Yemen, Iraq, Bosnia, Somalia, etc.

10. Why don’t Muslims openly condemn terrorism and suicide bombing, if they really don’t agree with it?

Of course Muslims have condemned such actions loudly and clearly. But if it is condemned in a mosque, who will know about it? Even if we stand on street corners and shout that we are just as appalled by terrorism, our message will only get out to a handful of passers by (who might think all sorts of other things about us instead!)

But how do we broadcast our opinions to the masses? We need the help of the mass media: newspapers and television. The good Muslim citizen is plain boring and will not grab headlines or turn heads. Ratings and sales are driven by emotions such as fear, outrage and hatred.

So it is difficult to hear the voices of the moderate majority, but certain sections of the media will give the oxygen of publicity to controversial extremists.

It is important therefore to sometimes get behind the headlines and read what the large organizations that represent Muslim are saying. For example, regarding terrorist activity, the Muslim Council of Britain says, “We utterly condemn these indiscriminate terrorist attacks against innocent lives. The perpetrators of these atrocities, regardless of their religious, ideological or political beliefs, stand outside the pale of civilised values.”

The words of the Qur’an (5:32) also state that the killing of a single innocent man should be looked on like the killing of the whole of mankind.

11. If Muslims and Christians share the same God, why can’t they tolerate one another and learn to live together?

Ans
Muslims and Christians have even more in common than God: they also share a respect for the prophets of the Bible (e.g. Abraham, Noah, Joseph, and particularly Jesus) as well as a respect for the Bible itself.

allkinds.jpgIt is often said that people are the weakest link in the world’s religions because they often fail to live up to their own teachings. Muslims are taught that all humankind is one brotherhood and sisterhood, having been created from a single pair of a male and female, and divided into nations and tribes, not that we may despise each other but so that we may know each other, celebrating our differences. All are equal and Muslims are taught that there is no difference between people in the sight of God, except in righteousness and nearness to God, which only God truly knows. In fact there are countless Islamic teachings talking about the need to respect people of other faiths.

Having said this, if we open the history books there are specific wars or specific occasions when relations between Muslims and Christians did break down. But what about the centuries of continuous peaceful neighbourly existence that the history books don’t talk about? E.g. Muslim and Christian Palestinians have lived side by side without a single war between them for well over a thousand years. In fact during the crusades, Christian Arabs met the same slaughter as their Muslim brethren. The same record of peace has held throughout Africa and Asia. Even in Europe, under the Ottoman Empire (which lasted 600 years) and in Islamic Spain (which lasted 800 years), Muslims and Christians also lived peacefully together. Why expect that in Birmingham in 2004, things should suddenly be different?

12. Why do Muslims pray with their face to the ground? Isn’t it a bit undignified?

Ans
During prayers, Muslims prostrate to the ground to show their humility in front of God, and their submission to God’s will. All Muslims perform this act when praying, regardless of race, colour, gender, wealth, education and social status. This gives them the sense that to God, they are all equal, as He only looks to what is in the hearts.

Prostration is also a state during which a Muslim is closest to his Creator and they are taught that it is a special time to ask God for forgiveness and help: “So prostrate and come close (to God),” (Holy Qur’an).

13. Why do Muslims remove their shoes when entering the mosque?

Ans
As a place of prayer, Muslims try to keep their mosques clean because the actions of prayer involve standing, sitting and prostrating on the floor.

14. Why live in the West when Islam disapproves of so many aspects of western life?

Ans
For Muslims, Islam is not a religion of the East or the West and Muslims have for centuries lived as minorities in countries all over the world, including the West. In addition many people in the West have converted to Islam and so know no other home.

The phenomenon of twentieth century mass migration has meant that many more Muslims now live in the West than previously. Theslide.jpg reasons why those Muslims moved to the West are varied and complex, but an important factor is that many Muslims found that some basic Islamic values like individual freedoms, tolerance, human rights, and an accountability of government are more respected in the West than in the so-called Muslim countries.

So many Muslims will say that there is nowhere in the world that fits their ideal, but Britain is closer to it than many Muslim countries.

There are lots of people that aren’t 100% satisfied with things in society. But that doesn’t make them traitors and surely they can still be glad to be British? Wouldn’t it be absurd if when a bishop or an MP spoke out and demanded changes in the law, they were considered patriotic and yet if a Muslim asked for changes to be considered, people saw him as ungrateful and disloyal!?

Would anyone expect the citizens of a country to accept life as it is and stay quiet, even if there was much room for improvement? After all, why else do we have this great tradition of parliamentary politics, if not to voice our concerns about the things we see as wrong in society and government?

15. Would you be offended by a Santa in a shopping centre? If yes, why? If not, then why don’t you speak out when council’s ban them on your behalf?

Ans
Although Muslims do not teach their children to believe in Santa Claus, there is no reason why they should be offended by any of the traditions in this country whether they are religious or not. Muslims would probably themselves prefer to join with other Christians in emphasising the spiritual teachings of Prophet Jesus at Christmas over the excessive materialism seen in present day society.

Why can’t councils celebrate with their citizens whenever the citizens have an occasion for happiness? This includes Christmas, Eid, Diwali etc. And though religious Christians may not like it, Santa Claus like many rituals before him, has now become part and parcel of the ‘magic of Christmas’.

No one wants a bland, cultureless council, which invents meaningless festivals but ignores the important religious ones that are dear to its citizens. This sounds like the oppressive ‘secular fundamentalism’ that is seen in other countries, where society harshly stamps out any public displays of religious or cultural identity. This is an unnatural attitude and does not help community relations.

As for speaking out: give us a voice, as this supplement has, and we will shout out against such nonsense! But if we aren’t given airtime to broadcast our feelings, you cannot reasonably claim that we don’t object.

16. Why have mosques when a prayer mat facing towards Mecca would suffice?

Ans
It is a feature of religions through the ages that they have always had places of worship. For many religions, the faith is more than a belief alone: they hold together communities and worship brings them together.

The Prophet Muhammad said that the whole of the Earth is a place of prayer, but Muslims are encouraged to pray in congregation, either as a family or with other people in the community.

This is because Islam encourages interaction and integration of families and neighbours into a community. Although we all need a little quiet time to ourselves every now and again, Islam does not encourage people to wander off into the wilderness abandoning their families and communities so the mosque is also a brief spiritual retreat.

17. Why can’t Muslims have normal names?

Ans
It is fashionable among Muslims, as it is in Britain generally, to choose a name based upon how it sounds. There is nothing wrong with four.jpgthis although Prophet Muhammed said that one of the rights of a child is that his/ her parents choose a good name for them, with a good meaning or they be named after notable people. So many Muslims choose names that are mentioned in the Qur’an, or are the names of the men and women who were dedicated disciples of the Prophet Muhammad, or the names of famous prophets, some of whom are also mentioned in the Bible, such as Ibrahim (Abraham), Yusuf (Joseph), Musa (Moses), Yahya (John), Adam and Issa (Jesus). Other common Muslim names include Ahmed and Mustafa, both of which refer to the Prophet Muhammad. A name beginning with “Abdul” simply means ‘servant of’ and is followed by one of God’s holy names.

The reason why these names may sound strange is because they are in Arabic and there often is no simple equivalent in English. However, many new English Muslims do choose to keep their old names, especially when they know that they have a good meaning. Others, however, wish to take on a new name, so that they feel a sense of Muslim identity. Another increasingly common option is to use names that sound the same and mean the same in many languages such as Sarah, a name used by Muslims, Jews and Christians alike.

Also, in Islam, a wife does not take on the surname of her husband, but keeps her family name and roots. This is to reinforce her independence as a person.

1. why are muslims all over the world blood thirsty and would readily kill in the name of anything?

How many muslims did you know that are blood thirsty?

Quran 5:32 ", if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people, "

Ibn `Abbas says: The Messenger of Allah, when dispatching his troops, would tell them, " , Do not behave treacherously, nor misappropriate war-booty, nor mutilate [those whom you kill], nor kill children, nor the people in cloisters." [Narrated by Ahmad, Tirmidhi (who graded it hasan sahih ]).

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Go in Allah's name, trusting in Allah, and adhering to the religion of Allah's Apostle. Do not kill a decrepit old man, or a young infant, or a child, or a woman; do not be dishonest about booty, but collect your spoils, do right and act well, for Allah loves those who do well. (Sunan Abu Dawud , Book 14, Number 2608)

But going through the bible:

Now kill all the boys [innocent kids]. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.(Numbers 31:17-18)"

1 Samuel 15:

2 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.
3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

What did ANIMALS DO?

2nd chronicle 15 v 13: All who would not seek the LORD, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.

I thought your god is a loving one shocked

A search for the word "kill" found it 442 times in the Revised Standard Version, and 271 times in the King James Version of the Bible compared to 40 times in the Pickthall Version and 22 times in the Yusuf-Ali Version of the Qur'an!

When the Crusaders conquered Jerusalem, they killed 70,000 Muslims. When the Muslims re-conquered the city they did not kill anybody.

Orthodox Christians were considered heretics and therefore did not escape the Crusaders' brutality. The Orthodox Churches, which were safe during centuries of Muslim rule, were looted by the Crusaders. The Holy Grail was not the only thing the Crusaders took from the Orthodox churches.

The Serb Christians waged war on the Muslim civilians in Bosnia and Kosovo. In Bosnia, more than 200,000 Muslims have been killed and more than 1400 mosques were destroyed or damaged. About 200 villages have been destroyed in Kosovo and about 250,000 refugees have fled for their lives.

When the Serb Christians invaded Kosovo, they destroyed all mosques despite the fact that the Christian monasteries were safe for centuries in the predominantly Muslim Kosovo.

Facts pls and while doing that, you may read my response to your first question and check here as well

4. why did mohammed snatch his adopted son`s wife? isnt that incest?

Olodo. I have replied Todak, you keep recycling questions which shows your lack of knowledge.

Read again:

According to the Western culture, an adopted son becomes an actual son. But this law does not exist in Islam.

Let us look at Noble Verses 33:4-5 "Allah has not Made for any man two hearts in his (one) body: nor has He made your wives whom ye divorce by Zihar your mothers: nor has He Made your adopted sons your sons. Such is (only) your (manner of) speech by your mouths. But Allah Tells (you) the Truth, and He Shows the (right) Way."

Zihar is the divorce done by pagan Arabs before Islam, where a man would say to his wife you are to me like my mother. The man could marry another woman, where the woman couldn't marry another man, which was very degrading to all women.

Zayd's, the Prophet's alleged "adopted son" by the haters of Islam, wife, was the one who wanted to divorce him and marry the Prophet. She was not forced into the marriage by any means. Let us look at Noble Verse 58:1 "God has indeed heard (and accepted) the statement of the woman who pleads with thee concerning her husband and carries her complaint (in prayer) to God: and God (always) hears the arguments between both sides among you: for God hears and sees (all things)."

Let us look at Noble Verse 33:37 "Behold! thou didst say to one who had received the grace of Allah and thy favour: 'Retain thou (in wedlock) thy wife, and fear Allah.' But thou didst hide in thy heart that which Allah was about to make manifest: thou didst fear the people, but it is more fitting that thou shouldst fear Allah. Then Zayd had dissolved (his marriage) with her, with the necessary (formality), we joined her in marriage to thee: In order that (in future) there may be no difficulty to the believers in (the matter) of marriage with the wives of their adopted sons, when the latter have dissolved with the necessary (formality) (their marriage) with them. And Allah's command must be fulfilled."

According to Islamic laws, where from the above Noble Verses do we see our beloved Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him marrying his daughter in law?!

According to Noble Verses 33:4-5 above, we clearly see that an adopted son is NOT in the place of an actual son. An adopted son is a son from a stranger person. The foster father would still have to treat the adopted son with kindness and fulfill all of his needs. But the adopted son can never be an actual son.

According to Noble Verse 33:37 above, we clearly see that Allah Almighty allowed for the Muslims to marry the former wives of their adopted sons!.

If a man called another's son "his son", it might create complications with natural and normal relationships if taken too literally. The truth is the truth and can not be altered by men's adopting "sons". "Adoption" in the technical sense is not allowed in Muslim Law. Those who have been "wives of your sons proceeding from your loins" are within the Prohibited Degrees of marriage, but this does not apply to "adopted" sons; "Prohibited to you (for marriage) are your mothers, daughters, sisters; father's sisters, mother's sisters; brother's daughters, sister's daughters; foster-mothers (who gave you suck), foster-sisters; your wives' mothers; your step-daughters under your guardianship, born of your wives to whom ye have gone in no prohibition if ye have not gone in (those who have been) wives of your sons proceeding from your loins; and two sisters in wedlock at one and the same time, except for what is past for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (The Noble Quran, 4:23)"

3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

What did ANIMALS do to him?

2nd chronicle 15 v 13: All who would not seek the LORD, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.

MERCIFUL god indeed.

What do you have to say to these killings:

The Serb Christians waged war on the Muslim civilians in Bosnia and Kosovo. In Bosnia, more than 200,000 Muslims were killed and more than 1400 mosques were destroyed or damaged. About 200 villages have been destroyed in Kosovo and about 250,000 refugees have fled for their lives.

@Noetic

who do u think u are fooling?

You dont need to be too worry about people fooling you, the one you are doing to yourself is enough. Just remove the color glasses in order to see things in thier natural color.

those are not the most asked questions about islam.
This is an attempt to unleash an islamic propaganda machine.
This same response had been dine and wine with in the past, including the most difficult questions that prophets left unanswered or answered because of thier hardened mind, including Jesus and Mohammad. Human being never get satisfied untill death come arround. Do you know thier response? "You are here with tricks and magics; simply propagandist".

The response may not solely useful to you, but I believe it would  still be read many people in the years to come, where it would make difference in what they here and what is written down in the Quran and Hadiths.

These are the most asked questions about islam, if u can "intelligently" answer this questions, then maybe my view on islam can change.
until then . . .    Huh Huh Huh

Your tone has clearly shown that if I unintelligently answerred your questions, you will never get satisfied. So, why do you think my response will be useful? However, with little or nothing, Intelligently, I will try.

1.   why are muslims all over the world blood thirsty and would readily kill in the name of anything?

First, maybe because you angry at muslims, you coludnt structure your question properly. I think I could help you on this.
The word, "blood thirsty" has no place in Islam.

In Islam, you dont kill in the name of anything, you kill in the name of Allah.
These can be in many faces, in some cases, it apply to the law of equality in punishment against one another. For example whoever killed wrongly should be killed. This is not in all cases as the killer may be forgiven instead.

Secondly, you can kill during the war, this can be done in severals ways and which ever ways it come. Muslims should ensure they follow the proper guidance as stated by the prophet. There are a lot of misconception on this which have been highlighted and expanciated in this forum.  Head or tail, it is left for those who wanted to follow the right guidance.

2.    What explanation do u have for mohammed`s paedophilic nature?

If you mean prophet Muhammad, this is very untrue. I need details. Thanks

3.    why did mohammed kill 700 jews in year 600?

I think I have a story details very related to your questions. Moreover, there are several posts on this forum related to it as well. If your goes straight, you would have said the Conquere of Jerusalem by Muslims. See, Neotic, you will never get convinced about this political historical events bettween the three faiths (Jew, Christians and Muslims), if you only belong to one side. I my detail response for you give your detail, then I will know where you belong. Maybe we continue from there.

4.     why did mohammed snatch his adopted son`s wife? isnt that incest?

  Haba, snatch! NO.

5.   why are muslims inclined towards "holy" killing against defenceless women and children?

No such nature in Islam, and never found a verse cited such in the Quran or Hadith. Islam preaches against, even during war, that you shouldn't kill unjustly and not children and women who have not raise sword against you.

6.   what is the rationality in amputating a helpless boy, who stole because of poverty, in the name of sharia?

  Where and when?

7.   why is terrorism an islamic agenda?

NO, terrorism is not an Islamic Agenda. Today, many things are wrongfully attached to Islam and muslims all over the world, that is why you see in my previous post as my questions are structured the way it is. Not only terror, what about the ff: extremists, fundamentalists, even in my local language "Esin o ko ku" and so on. Meanwhile, this is a complex situation for the present and the next generations to comprehend. Nevertheless, for whoever Allah guides, nobody can mislead such. As muslims who are ready to learn and clear out this complexity, one need 1.  A very detail knowledge about Islam, both Quran and Hadiths 2. Wisdom and pray for Allah's guidance always.

8.   whats the rationale in killing people who choose to convert to other religions after seeing the numerous and despicable evil of islam?

First, there is no evil in Islam. I have tasted and tested it in many faces. Now, you may be right, it is possible for one to be killed if he/she left a particular faith. This has a lot of complexities as well. Killing is not the utmost concern of any muslim community. In many cases leaving such a person and pray for him is better and more preferable in the sight of Allah than for him being dead as unbliever. This is not only applicable to Islam alone. However, in short, killing a convertee is strictly exceptional which should be handle carefully by any muslim community. Meanwhile, I have people in among my family members and friends that converted to christians, I have never fought them coz they converted not to talk of killing them. Very closely, my junior brother living and feeding under me. Moreover, in many community, killing is not even applicable.  e.g where your place and time of worship has not been affected.

9.   whats ur explanation for mohammed marrying a 6 year old girl? would u let him marry and sexually abuse ur 6 year old girl?

This has been trashed several times on this forum. Just browse through the forum, there several details response. I will cite it if I have time to check.

10.   why do u presently wish u could see me now and stab me? why is violence in ur blood?

I never stated that. Even, I wish to see you probably you would weoclome me. Neither babs will never thought so.

11.    why is there no tolerance in any islamic state? why is there no democracy in any islamic state?

If I may help you, clearly explain your tolerance level and your democaracy the way you understand it, maybe from bible, then we discuss further.

12.   why do u have to kill for allah? why is allah such a powerless, blood thirsty, demonic and consciously debilitating object called an idol?

I don't blame you. You can never know the content of the case untill it is opened to you. Just continue calling it any name. He has the key and the owner of your heart. You can never comprehend His power. The rest clause have been answerred in the previuos questions.

13.    why do u abuse ur powers on nairaland, by banning and deleting anti-islamic posts, yet promote anti-xtian posts?

I think you just need to redirect your question to moderator

14.  whats the rationale behind jihad? fighting and killing defenceless people when unprovoked?

Jihad is an arabic word, meaning struggle, it has level, our discussion here is a form of jihad, the highest level is killing the unblievers who are ready to kill you, commonly term HOLY WAR. It has mode and method as stated by Quran and Hadith. Whoever does JIHAD without the correct guidance as stated in the Quran and Hadith has no reward.

15.   why does allah want u to convert the world to islam by war? if he was that powerful, why didnt he just touch people`s heart when prayed for?

There is no such in Islam. Allah ordered to  call to Islam with knowledge and wisdom.

"Invite to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Revelation and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided."

16.   why is allah keeping several generations of slaves? why is he not a father, but an advocate of modern slavery?
Generations to generations, many things are understood differently. That is they way you understand slaves, I think you will share the same view with my great grand fathers because my use to tell me that his when his own father and friends were young and they hear of slave, they ran away, thinking Amrican invaders are coming. Even some bible verses will not share your thinking. Slave in Islam means person you obey someone(ALLAH), you dont do things the way you like, he gave you manual to leave your life. For you to be accepted, you have to follow the manual strictly.

He is not a father because human being forget easily, nowadays, literal heavenly father has been deningly transformed GOD almighty to share part of human attribute.

17.    why is the world such a terrible place because of the violence of islam?

The world will continue to be a terrible place because of your bad attitude, corruption, injustice and selfishness. Moreover, God will not change our condition until you and I change our bad attitude starting from this forum.

Undoubtedly, there are many complexity political wars going on around the globe involving Muslims and Islamic state. Admittedly, Muslims may be wrong in some circumstances. However, Islam does not preach their wrong doings. Islam preaches peace and unity. There can't peace without justice. We know our differences, we can't have the same religions, share the same view and opinion. Then, why fighting?
To a cursory observer, there is more to politically inclined wars than religion. There are lot on this, this is an assignment I have given myself  and starting from home, Nigeria. Truly the fighting's are not totally religious!

Thanks.

I am only bothering to reply cos u displayed positive discretion in answering, but shielded away from the main issues I raised.

Let me state here, that I have no problem with islam, neither do I consider myself an enemy of islam.
What I do however have a problem with is the many evil doctrines and inactions of islam in the name of allah. and the many deplorable and inhuman islamic inactions in the name of sharia in the 21st century, some of which reflects the questions i have been asking.

why must u kill in the name of allah? why must u kill at all outside human law in the 21st century? ur response does not reflect reality.

u didnt tell me why mohammed killed 700 jews in year 600?

why do attempt to use denial as a way of answering questions? I understand that it is acceptable in ur religion allows u to tell lies to defend allah.
It will however not stand here, cos I dont believe in allah.

did mohammed not marry his adopted son`s wife? so y d denial?

does sharia not advocate amputation of people for alleged crimes? is the zamfara example not a living testimonial?
is the numerous begeading of nigerians and others in saudi arabia and other islamic nations not an example?

@ noetic,

I am only bothering to reply cos u displayed positive discretion in answering, but shielded away from the main issues I raised.

There is no need to bother, even if I have answerred differently might not changed your perception to Islam. And your response might not be different.

Let me state here, that I have no problem with islam, neither do I consider myself an enemy of islam.

Rather say you have problem with muslims.

What I do however have a problem with is the many evil doctrines and inactions of islam in the name of allah. and the many deplorable and inhuman islamic inactions in the name of sharia in the 21st century, some of which reflects the questions i have been asking.

There is no evil doctrines in Islam whatsoever, just understand it very well. Start from reading Quran yourself. Sharia is an Islamic law for Muslims being used in an Islamic state. If you talk of Nigeria sharia, you might not get it proper. Cos, for example, proper implementation of Sharia require stable economy. If someone steal, it wouldn't be because of out of hunger, no jobs and the government is doing nothing to this, otherwise people with long spoon are only serving their belly. My explanation might not satisfied you enough, even if I try with pages. You only need to read it yourself, prbably with open mind.

why must u kill in the name of allah? why must u kill at all outside human law in the 21st century? ur response does not reflect reality.

I think I have clear this accusation. You musn't kill except the person is a criminal and is the highest penalty accorded. For example, a hardened killer, just like Drug pushers tracked several times realy shows it won't changed. Moreso, even from human law, there is killings, human law is even worst, because there is no mistakes recognition. Death sentence was passed Pastor king, I think you are aware of that. So, there is law everywhere, even in christianity.

u didnt tell me why mohammed killed 700 jews in year 600?

My man, I wish you present your facts very well,. I have the detailed, just a bit busy.

why do attempt to use denial as a way of answering questions? I understand that it is acceptable in ur religion allows u to tell lies to defend allah.
It will however not stand here, cos I dont believe in allah.

I am not advocating for Allah for you to believe in Him. He knows your heart, He guides whoever He wishes.

did mohammed not marry his adopted son`s wife? so y d denial?

which one?

does sharia not advocate amputation of people for alleged crimes? is the zamfara example not a living testimonial?
is the numerous begeading of nigerians and others in saudi arabia and other islamic nations not an example?
Yes, amputation is right according to sharia, but does the government provides all necesssary means to block being a criminal. Will you steal if you have your three sq meals daily, you have a shelter, free to amenities and infrastructures. If all these were provided, then why stealing? Why pushing drugs? why killing in the name of money, why human rituals for getting wealthy? Even, samfara that you are even talking about, when Sharia was first implemented, in order to minimzed adultry and corruption, I witness prostitutes given money to start trading, intended bachelor getting married given cash and several things. It was just a faces of sharia.
Now, do you know how many allocation to your local govt alone in the name of "demo crazy", what have we gotten, all has been like ironical rain which devil does not allow to reach the ground. I believe if sharia is properly analyse for you, it will be your choice.

u offered no meaningful explanation as to why people are killed after converting from islam, or should I skip that?

Regarding killing a convertee, I think I have responded well. What you only need now is to start presenting some cases. The issue of Aisha, the prophet wife has been anaylse several times in this forum, just search through the forum and grap any response that suit your intention.

You don't need to worry about redeeming Allah's name yourself, leave it to Allah alone. Concern about redeeming yourself before your demise. Allah has been existing before you and when you die people will still been calling His name.

Many of these have been read before, its all just noises about Islam. Whereever, sharia is being used properly will still be the most peacefull environment ever. You just only need to clear off your hatred towards Islam. Read Quran and Hadiths you find better answers to your questions if your intention is formal.

Gentleman, i have been sifting through some of your posts and this i would say got under my skin. Lets be civil and understand and respect the sensitivities of other faiths. If we must debate and argue lets do it but within the confines of intellectualism, civility and decorum which frowns at throwing of insults and derogatory words not just to a person but to the symbol of a faith. I can assume your a christian from your posts but no muslim can ever say a derogatory word towards Jesus not to mention calling Allah with those words.

It is is ignorance i would say leads you to call Allah in those term as we have established time without numbers that arab christains call God with that name, that yoruba call god as olorun , that igbo people call him chineke , that hausas calls him Allah or Ubangiji. I cant believe a true christain would refer to God in those demeaning terms all because he hates a faith and the people of that faith refer to God in a particular language.

Referring to the prophet of islam in those words is simply ridiculous and you could be humble enough to apologise and continue with your debate. There is absolute no need for insults and that is why people get baned from this section.

You say muslims should stay of the xtian forum but there is no christain section on NL what we have is a religious section for peoplle of all faiths and it is only islam that has a separate section.
