AKWA IBOM INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The gateway to these riches is through the Akwa Ibom International
Airport, situated in Uyo, the state capital. Although conceived in 2001,
construction by Alcon Nigeria Ltd did not begin until 2006 and it was
opened for business in 2009.
Phase One of the project has now been completed and the airport
boasts a runway of 3,600 metres, expandable to 4,200 metres, the
second-longest runway in Nigeria after Lagos, with an impressive 190
approach lights. The airport can accommodate most current
commercial aircraft, including wide-bodied planes such as the Boeing
747 and Airbus A340. It can even provide ample space for the Airbus
A380 with its wingspan of 79.8m.
Arik Air was the first airline to fly into the new airport in September
2009, exactly 22 years after the creation of the state. Then came Dana
Air, followed by Aero, which began daily flights between Lagos and
Uyo in June 2010. Additionally in July this year Aero initiated daily
flights between Abuja and Uyo.

Who are you people deceiving with that village airport?

Akpabio built that crap for himself and his ego and there is nothing to that landing strip beyond the noise they make everyday.

AKS paramount rulers comfortably seated in a corner of the passenger terminal building of Akwa Ibom International Airport while waiting to receive the state governor, His Excellency Chief Godswill Akpabio, on 28th April

^^^^ Apart from the fact that he summons people to sit around the silly airport for hours to wait for him and receive him like some kind of god, the terminal right there in the picture is so tinny, my bedroom is even more spacious than that gimmick the losers is making noise about all over the place... Just look rthe poor traditional rulers looking bore and inconvenienced.

^^^^^ Imagine summoning public officials to receive him at the airport as if they don't have something better to do? Must people always sit around the airport just to receive this clown?

This is all about the clown and his ego landing strip he's fooling Nigerians with. Just look at the shed behind them? This is what they call international airport and fooling Nigerians with....smh..

incrediblestev: Another thoughtless and miscalculated ego-riding project with little or no viability.....
cargo airport in a state that is largely rural with little or no serious economic activities going on there.... Lagos and may be Oyo states are the only SWest states that can be talking of such project not rural osun state. what is the essence of building an international cargo airport in a state whose economy does not rely on shipment of goods or buying and selling..... how many big businesses are in Osun state to warrant a white elephant project.... na wa for all these our leaders sef.... Dem can sabi do rubbish just to look busy.
For me is better than packing all the money and put it in his pocket, or what do u think? He should embezzle the money meant for the project? Abeg jare let him do something

It is July 2014. The Osun governor seeks re-election.

We must ask: What happened to the May 2014 Airport Delivery Date

No one seems to be asking questions about this man's incompetence. You don't make statements when you can keep your words!

Southwest people ask question ke?
Are they done being obsessed with igbos?
See the way that useless agbayameta tried downgrading akpabio with the airport stuff when it is pretty obvious that the best governor in Southwest being fashola with all the fed and state IGR couldn't even come close to what akpabio achieved in akwaibom state.all these ofenmanus realy need to grow up and start asking their leaders questions I swear.but after all said and done,I guess they get the kind of leader they deserved.

These leaders are mostly clueless and know that the only think that they could do is to building quack "international" airports in every state, even those states that don't even have up to 2 million people.

Instead of building highway systems, medical centers, mega shopping areas, factories, etc., their quack and corrupt nature only allows for airport.

Sometimes it reduces BP and increases laughter, I mean the action of politicians. It is a tragicomedy with the principal of animalism. If there is nothing like these ghost projects money will not be siphoned.

Good to know.
The Gov. said the airport will have 3.5 kilometres runway,
which he said will be the longest in the country sad?

Is he competing with other airports in Nigeria undecided?

I think the Governor should focus on getting it right and making the airport
functional instead of rubbing shoulder with other existing airports.

*Hope the construction will not later become an abandon project undecided*

Saw all the tribal comments and was like wow!! Funny enough, after abusing the south easterner's,the airport hasn't been completed. Does it show how useless and incompetent the osun state governor or does it show the media hype and propaganda they are known for? You be the judge. Most times we really need to be careful about what we say and do! It might come back to haunt us one day.....
