The Six Major “sins” Committed On Facebook by Donmams(m): 11:59am On Nov 26, 2013
Facebook is a social networking site meant for old friends to reconnect and make new ones. In some cases, some people place adverts of the kind of businesses they do. But, in Nigeria, people have been exploiting the platform the site provides to express their fancies. To some critics, some expressions constitute an abuse.

Let’s discuss some of them:

1) Silly names: It is a common trend on facebook to see people anglicising their Nigerian names. “Oladimeji Ayo” are spelt “Horladhemehji ‘swaggerboy’ Haryor”, while “Funmilayor Adekunle” are twisted to be “Phunmilayor ‘dopegurl’ Hardehkunle.” Owners of the names argue the bastardisation expresses class and modernity. But to proud traditionalists, what’s classy about altering one’s natural names?

2) Unnecessary uploads: Uploading photos isn’t a crime but when it becomes an every second, every minute, every hour affair, you would be clogging people’s timeline, thereby making facebook uninteresting. It also portrays how jobless you are.

3) Abusing another person’s wall: Another big “sin” committed on facebook is when two people go to someone else’s wall and start a very long conversation as if they are sitting in their living room. Whatever happened to that thing called ‘inbox’? It’s weird and totally annoying.

4) Posts: You have your own home page; as such you have the right to make as many posts as you want. But do you know it gets on people’s nerves to see your updates every minute, every second? What message are you sending across about yourself? It clogs people’s timeline and at a point, your friends would get tired of seeing your updates.

5) Commenting on everybody’s posts/pictures: This is one of the major sins of facebook. That your friends write posts or even upload photos doesn’t mean you should make comments on every Tom, Dick and Harry’s update or photo. You are not the only one who see these posts or comments. So why comment on them every time?

6) Asking unimportant questions via inbox: This is one sin a lot of people are guilty of especially the menfolk. It is so annoying when someone who you are not even friends with just sends you a random message on facebook via inbox and says, “Hi pretty, can I get to know you?” Or perhaps he says, “I just saw your pictures and I fell in love with you immediately”. In this age, who does that please? Have your manners suddenly flown out of the window? It’s a turn-off, a very big one.

People need to seriously consider their use of the social network and check if they are guilty of any of these sins. If they are, then they need to call themselves to order and make the necessary adjustments.
