So amazing, for the first time in Nigeria a wild elephant was given its life back… a chance to live again through a successful surgery by a team of vet surgeon from the state house ABJ headed by Dr. Aisha Abubakar. The elephant was shot by poachers in an attempt for its ivory, terribly injured on it right shoulders shattering its humur bone. The injured elephant was first sighted in the eastern part of the reserve (Buri area) where a herd had spent over a month in the area. Two weeks later the elephant herd showed up at Wikki where they left the wounded elephant at the mercy of the management of the Yankari GR. The message was clear enough that we had to do something urgently. WCS teaming up with Dr Aisha and securing permission from BSG took the chance to save the elephant. A pre surgery examination was conducted followed by a 2 hour Surgery to find the bullets and treat the infections. Three days after the procedure the elephant recovered and rejoined his herd.
