Returning from the Yuletide break, the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has resumed his effort to accomplish his administration’s vision of making Anambra State the first choice investment destination and a hub for industrialization and commercial activities with the recent attraction of an automobile assembly plant and a natural gas distribution plant to the state.

The two investors are Richbon Nigeria Limited which plans to establish a $40m vehicle assembly plant in the state and Falcon Corporation Limited which intends to set up a natural gas distribution project valued at $100m that will pipe natural gas to the many industrial clusters in the state.

The proposed Richbon assembly plant will be located in the industrial cluster at Oba, Idemili Local Government Area and will on completion assemble various types of automobiles including light and heavy duty trucks, buses, construction and agricultural equipment among others.

On the other hand, Falcon Corporation’s $100m investment is pointedly targeted at scaling up power supply to the various industrial clusters in order to shore up their capacity utilization and bring down production cost to stimulate a significant growth in the real sector.

Penning a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the chief executives of the two companies in Awka at the weekend, Governor Obiano explained that the two investors were a great addition to the growing list of wise businessmen and women who had discovered the huge economic potentials of Anambra State and have moved in to take advantage of the new investor-friendly climate that his administration had created in the state.

According to him, the two entrepreneurial giants had heeded the call by the state government on path-breaking indigenes who had contributed significantly to the economic growth of other states across the country and beyond to come back home and play a role in building the New Anambra State.
Governor Obiano also noted that the projects were in line with his administration’s Four Pillars of Development which was conceived to open up the state for investment, create employment, stimulate domestic growth, enhance the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), open fresh revenue windows and increase the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)

The governor further revealed that his administration had intensified efforts to double the volume of current investmentinflow to the state and enjoined all stakeholders to support his on-going efforts to transform Anambra State.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of Richbon, Chief CajetanMuonagolu explained that he was encouraged to site the proposed automobile assembly plant in Anambra State because of the friendly investment climate that governor and his team had created as well as Governor Obiano’s avowed commitment to change the state for good.

Chief Muonagolu further revealed that Anambra would be the first to host such an ultramodern assembly plant in Africa pointing out that Richbon was also determined to invest heavily in Agriculture.
Speaking in the same vein, the Chairman of Falcon Corporation, Prof. Joe Ezeigbo explained that the arrival of his company in the state would divvy up growth in the industrial sector as it would supply relatively cheap fuel to power industrial machines and boost capacity utilization thereby leading to a realistic and sustainable industrial growth in the domestic economy.

Prof. Ezeigbo extolled Governor Obiano’s bold and pragmatic approach to governance recalling that he had made several attempts in the past to establish his business in the state but all his efforts came to naught.
The industrialist observed that Anambra had enough potential to become the industrial hub of West Africa if Obiano’s bold efforts are sustained and regretted that the high volume of gas Nigeria loses annually to gas flaring was enough to provide stable power supply to the West African sub region.

In his own remarks, the Managing Director of Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency (ANSIPPA), Mr. Joe Billy Ekwunifeexpressed optimism that more investors would be encouraged to consider Anambra State as the best choice for investment following the recent influx of investors to the state.

He also expressed the hope that with the growing investments in the state more jobs would be created to meet the bloated employment market while more revenue windows would emerge to shore up the state’s Internally Generated Revenue.

Anambra attracts $1.65bn investments as Oduah heads Anambra airport project

By Our Reporter on December 29, 2014 Trending
In keeping with his avowed commitment to achieve increased investment inflow to the state, Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, said the state has attracted about $1.65 billion investment from investors since March 17, 2014 when the new administration was inaugurated.

These investments, he said, were attracted to key areas covering agriculture, hospitality and tourism industry, power generation, trade and commerce, among others.

Obiano, who addressed journalists on the various programmes and achievements as well as challenges facing his government, also disclosed that he had appointed former Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Oduah, as head of Anambra State Airport Development Agency based on her wealth of experience and track record of turning around the country’s aviation industry, noting that his administration had distributed high-yielding seedlings to farmers and encouraged the formation of cooperative societies for easy access to farm inputs and credits.

The governor stated that through the Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency

(ANSIPPA), investments had flowed in from the Coched Farms $175 million, Ekcel Farms Limited ($150 million) and Grains and Silos Llimited ($11 million). Others are Delfarm Limited and Songhai Regional Centre from Benin Republic with $200 million investment, West Africa Inter-continental Trade Centre ($320 million) and Cardinal Developers and Trust which took over the completion of Anambra’s four-star luxury hotel in Onitsha, among others.

He stated that the investment feat recorded by his administration in a few months in office was made possible by well-deserved appointment of competent professionals, especially in the areas of financial investment and banking as board members of the Anambra State investment Promotion and Protection Agency (ANSIPPA), led by Cyril Enweze, traditional ruler of Umuoji and an accomplished professional of international repute.

The governor pointed out that consideration was being given to an idea of expanding Onitsha Main Market to the River Niger, stressing that four other urban markets had been proposed for urban settlements of the state.

Anambra Fire Service Urges Govt. To Provide Insurance Cover | fire outbreaks
Agency Report
— Jan 19, 2015 | 0 Comments
The Anambra Fire Service on Monday urged Gov. Willie Obiano to provide insurance cover and hazard allowances for its officers and men to ensure their safety while fighting fire outbreaks.

Mr Ikechukwu Nzegwu, the Chief Operating Officer, Okpoko Fire Service Station, made the appeal while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha, Anambra on Monday.

“It is the trend in most states to have insurance package in place for the fire fighters who put their lives and safety at risk while putting in their best to salvage lives and property,’’ Nzegwu noted.

He said that the payment of hazard allowances would act as incentive and make the job of fire-fighting attractive to young and energetic people needed for the job.

He also appealed to government to provide them with bigger fire-fighting vehicles and other equipment that will spur them to do better.

“With bigger and better equipment, we can withstand any fire incident and put it under control in due time.

“Another problem we have in putting out fire is the size of fire-fighting vehicle, which has the capacity of only 1,000 gallons of water.

“If we have a fire-fighting vehicle or supportive water tank that has about 3,000 or 7,000 gallons of water; it will give us enough water to fight any dimension of fire,’’ he said.

NAN reports that some fire-fighting vehicles are already grounded like the ones at the Main Market, Onitsha.

However, those working in the state needed turn-around servicing for optimal performance since we are in the harmattan and dry season when fire outbreak is common. (NAN)

About N18billion have been spent by APGA administration in Anambra State on the construction of roads in Idemili North and south local government areas.
Governor Willie Obiano, who disclosed this Sunday while inaugurating the construction of two roads at Ogidi, Idemili North, said that the two roads totalling over five kilometres are Oye Olisa- Ogidiani-Umuoji road and Boys secondary school Ani-Ukwu road Ogidi.
He assured that the project which was awarded at the cost of N1.6billion will be completed before the end of this year.
The governor said the government would soon award the Nwazik-Johnbosco-Electrical market road and PHCN road for construction, in addition to on-going work on schools and health centres infrastructure in the area.
He explained that the area has equally received a fair share of political appointments and urged the people to give APGA total support to sustain the tempo of development in the area.

Navy To Take Security Awareness To Riverine Communities In Anambra
— Jan 16, 2015 | 0 Comments
The Nigerian Navy said on Friday it had concluded plans to sensitise riverine communities in Anambra to possible security threats on the nation’s waterways.

The Commanding Officer of the Navy Outpost in Onitsha, Navy Capt. Mike Oamen, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha, Anambra, that awareness campaign was to strengthen the level of security in the state.

Oamen said the awareness would enable the communities to give informed and well-articulated messages on activities along the water-line to the navy.

· Cue in audio

“We intend to make sure we show presence in all these communities and try to inform them on the possible threats that could happen on water.

“Anytime they see some vessels that are not clearly marked – because we have ensured that all vessels plying the waterways are properly marked and are identifiable – they can reach us quickly because we have given them our telephone numbers.

“That is how we work; once we get the information we move and quickly arrest the situation.

“Everybody should be vigilant and make sure they report to the nearest security agency anything they think is suspicious.“

NAN reports that the River Niger runs through the seven council areas in Anambra North Senatorial zone, which includes Anambra East, Anambra West, Ayemalum, Ogbaru, Onitsha North, Onitsha South and Oyi local government areas.

The commander, however, advised criminals, oil bunkerers, pirates and smugglers to steer clear of the waterways in Anambra.

“Those people, it is clear that their days of operation on the waterways here are over,“ he said. (NAN)

Crisis looms in Anambra community, as youths allege illegal oil deal

By Nwabueze Okonkwo

ONITSHA—The ongoing misunderstanding between the youths and stakeholders of Umerike na Umia village of Umolum in Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State would have degenerated into a full blown communal crisis, last weekend, but for the quick intervention of Governor Willie Obiano.
The youths had embarked on a demonstration against what they described as a grand conspiracy between a priest and a retired headmaster in the area to strike an illegal oil deal with Orient Petroleum Plc without the consent of elders and youths in the area.
The youths, numbering up to 100, gathered at Nwoye Junction, from where they embarked on the protest that took them to Shell Road and reserved Oil wells at the Otu Umolum water side in search of Orient Petroleum workers.
While the demonstration lasted, the youths accused the Catholic priest and the ex-headmaster (names withheld) of inviting some people believed to be workers of Orient Petroleum to the site earlier in the month for possible oil exploration, without their consent and that of the elders.
When the youths could not trace the whereabouts of the oil workers, they also matched to the priest’s residence where they demanded to know about the visitors, who they were and the purpose of their visit.
Spokesman of the youth group, Comrade Mocha Anierobi, said their demonstration stemmed from the fact that they could no longer trust the priest because of the manner with which he represented the community in previous dealings with other oil companies in the area.
He alleged that the N9 million royalty paid by Shell Development Corporation to the villages of Amikwe, Ikenga and Umerike na Umia through the Rev. Father since January 22, 2010, was yet to be released to the villagers or accounted for by the priest till date.
He said the youths had cancelled any agreement reached between the priest and Shell, Cetrap, Elf or Orient Petroleum on behalf of the villages, either in part or in full without the consent of the elders and the youths in the area.
The protesting youth called on Governor Obiano to urgently wade into the matter and call the priest and his allies to order, to prevent the situation from escalating into communal crises capable of leading to a total breakdown of law and order
However, in a reply, priest addressed the protesters in a subtle manner, telling them that the people that came into the area were not workers of Orient Petroleum, adding that they were there to install a power generating plant that will supply electricity to Orient Petroleum Refinery at Nsugbe in Anambra East Local Government Area.
He assured that Orient Petroleum workers would still come to do meet the yearnings of the villages at the appropriate time.

Revealing the ‘Anambra Equation’

04 Jan 2015
Font Size: a / A

There is a quiet revolution in Anambra State. Nigeria would know of it soon. It is an open secret among “NdiAnambra”, as indigenes of Anambra State and residents of the state are called.

This is against the typology of “Anambrarians” as indigenes of the state were previously described before the advent of the Willie Obiano government. The new nomenclature came about in the wake of the Obiano administration which is barely nine months old. The Governor is known to have consistently said that the old typology sounded more like “Barbarians”.

The new focus is on the ‘Anambra Equation’ and what they call the “Enablers”. This equation centres on agriculture, industrialisation, trade and commerce (of course, the world knows that the people have always excelled in these areas), and Oil and Gas. A critical part of the equation is security, security of movement, security of lives and property, security of economic investment, and security of development.

Their major case history is the Niger Bridge and the main entrance into Anambra State, the Upper Iweka Road, Onitsha, through Asaba in Delta State. Before now, the situation on Upper Iweka Road could best be described in one word “bedlam”. Not so any more.
Upper Iweka Road can now be compared with some of the best boulevards around the world. It is not only speck clean, there is ease and freedom of movement. There is also a great sense of safety around that environment, just like there is across the state.

To underscore the new sense of security pervading the State, the Willie Obiano Government has in the last one week been holding a series of activities at venues and times which would have been unthinkable before now. There is the “Obiano Soccer Fiesta” which commenced on December 22 at strategic venues across the state. The final held at Rojenny Stadium, Oba, near Onitsha.
A cultural festival involving all the local governments took place at Ekwueme Square, Awka. Onitsha North local government claimed the ultimate prize at that event. The first ever “Christmas Carols of Nine Lessons” was held at the Women Development Centre, Awka. That Christmas carol ended with pyrotechnics. Onitsha stood still as residents witnessed unprecedented fireworks display.

Anambra State boasts of a very high number of entertainment professionals, some of whom are among the top 10 in their various segments of the arts. They also took their turn to showcase their talents at Ekwueme Square.
