WHAT IS POLICY EXCESS?

Motor Insurance Policy often has a clause called ''Policy Excess.'' The policy excess is the amount paid by the insured for each and every claim made. The policy excess can be stated as a fixed amount, e.g. N20,000 for each and every claim.

It can also be stated as a percent of the clam, e.g., 10% for each and every claim. Lastly, it could be stated as both a percent and an amount, e.g. 10% or N20,000.00 for each and every claim, whichever is greater.

The policy excess is inserted in most motor insurance policy to make the insured or owner of the vehicle more cautious when he/she is driving. It is to ensure reasonable precaution on the part of the insured.

However, most companies allow the insured to buy back the excess, which is referred to as ''EXCESS BUY BACK.(EBB)'' This means that the insured does not have to pay a part of the claim anytime a claim is made. The cost for the EBB is usually a fraction of the premium payable.
