Gov. Al-makura dragged to court for neglecting man who was knocked by his convoy

December 2, 2013

The story of killer convoys would not vanish anytime soon as Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura, has been dragged to court by a non-governmental organisation, Center for Social Justice for allegedly neglecting a man, Ayuba Yakubu of Kwandere Village, Lafia Local Government Area, who was allegedly knocked down by the governor’s convoy over a year ago.

Although the governor was not present when the accident occurred along Keffi-Akwanga road, the convoy was conveying his wife, Salamatu Al-Makura and it eventually resulted in the loss of all that the victim had as he has not been able to work since then. It also claimed the lives of 19 people including two police officers.

Mr. Ayuba, who was the only survivor of the accident, it was learnt was on his way to Lafia when the accident occurred between the the government’s Toyota Hilux with registration number NSGH 37 and a commuter bus with registration number XC 212 GW.

The NGO, through its counsel, Kingsley Njoku, decried the failure of the government to honor an earlier agreement to settle out of court after the convoy driver, Bawa Ahmadu, pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was convicted by a magistrate court.

Mr. Njoku stated that the matter came up at a Keffi High Court after he filed a suit (NGd/k28/2013) against Mr. Al-Makura, the Nasarawa government, the state attorney general and commissioner of justice, and the guilty driver, Bawa Ahmed, as the first, second, third, and fourth respondent respectively, during which the state government’s counsel asked for time to settle out of court and offered N2 million to Mr. Ayuba below the N4 million requested by the orthopedic hospital, Kano.

This offer, according to Mr. Njoku, has not been fulfilled which prompted his clients decision to return to court to get the state government to settle the medical bills.

Reacting to these claims, the Nasarawa state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Innocent Lagi, stated that the government’s offer was rejected. Despite that, the government was doing everything possible to get Ayuba back to his feet, although he refused to reveal the nature of the offer made by the government.

My Ayuba must not die!

Pagan 9ja, here is another worthy cause to add to your growing list of concerns, now that you've decided to broaden your scope beyond 'tribal issues'.

It boggles the mind that so many contributors on NL are shackled by party loyalty.
Do you not see the dangers in going up the creek without a paddle when you suspend objective reasoning?
