What is this one talking about??.. undecided

The airport has 1 runway for both domestic and international flights
Why one runway with all the overhyped remodelling going on, an international airport is suppose to have four runways and not one.

Currently stranded in Owerri. To top it all I have a biz meet at 3pm today in Abuja. This is just not acceptable!!!

Maybe in dis fresh air regime,
Slippery Floor tiles, bullet proof BMWs etc are much more important in an 'international' airport than standard runways.

The story of Abuja Airport's 2nd runway.

1) It was said that the 2nd runway would cost over 64 billion naira.

2) Critics and members of the National Assembly complained about the cost. They said that it cost Akwa-Ibom state less to construct an entire airport.

3) Some critics also said that P.W offered to construct the runway at a lesser cost, but the contract was given to Julius Berger which quoted a higher sum.

4) The EFCC investigated the process and found nothing wrong with it.

5) It was reported that the government ordered aviation officials to reduce the cost of the project.

6) Aviation officials said that the government did not slash the cost, rather it reduced the scope of work on the project.

7) The National Assembly blocked the 2nd runway project and the Abuja railway project.

Fingers crossed!

The airport was never completed. What you see is just a phase hurriedly put in place by Babangida back then and a patchwork of upgrades ever since. The original plans were 'excessively elaborate aka white elephant and were abandoned a long time ago.

This is what happens when a country is full of social critics who never allow things to be done. Over to the national assembly who blocked the second runway project.

Mayor_of_Lagos: That is impossible. International airports have multiple runways for precisely that reason. If a runway is unusable there usually are two parallel sets aligned N-S and E-W to give airlift assist with tailwind for departing and headwind for landing. So at minimum there will be four. If one is blocked what happened to other three?

impossible ?

that word is not in our dictionary in Nigeria

is it possible for NEPA not to give you power for even 5minutes in a month yet they bill you 20,000 monthly ?

is it possible for Doyin Okupe to be working with GEJ now ?

is it possible for the head of custom to tell the senate he does not know the volume of crude oil being exported and imported daily ?

is it possible for a seating president to have sex with his son wife ?

And who told you an international airport is suppose to have 4 runways??

It simply depends on the level of traffic or how busy the airport is. Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Abuja is very very far from what you would call a busy airport by all standards. Heathrow Airport London which is one of the busiest airports in the world has only 2 runways although it sure needs some more because at busy times, a plane takes-off from Heathrow every 45-60seconds.

The news report isn't clear on what is really going on at the Abuja airport but instead of a new runway, what I think is needed urgently is an efficient system to evacuate (tow) the the carcass of the Saudi cargo plane from the runway.

The National Assembly blocked proposals for a (64 billion naira) 2nd runway, saying that it's too expensive (I think that they thought that the contract was inflated).

Hm! Who knows if this is an attempt to get them to change their minds?

sure, thats why the Pro-Oduah group created the thread.

64,000,000,000 naira to build just 1 runway that will start "leaking" days after it is completed, dont you see that it is inflated already?
that money will build an airport

Kuala Lumpur International Airport which is Malaysia's main international airport and one the major airport of South East Asia
It was ranked the 9th busiest airport in the world by international passenger traffic, and is the 4th busiest international airport in Asia
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuala_Lumpur_International_Airport

was built with 3.5 billion USD approximately 540 billion naira and has 2 parallel runways, each is 2 kilometers long
Our greedy mistress want to build a single "local standard" 700 meters runway for 64 Billion naira

person wey her coffin go still crash last last.

Where is Lastma with their tow trucks or dem random strangers posing as mechanics when you break down in d middle of nowhere!!!

And how is it that a Saudi Plane breaks down very conveniently on the only runway outta a major city in Africa. If you ask me I smell something very fishy! Surely the pilot must have known the plane was faulty before landing or did fuel finish the moment he touched down!!!

Also because its a foreign plane from "abroad" nairalanders aren't calling 4 the politicians' heads but if it was a naija plane, some will even call for war & revolution like that's gonna solve life's problems!!! Nigerians!

And all of you bringing nigeria into it,how are we linked to a saudi plane breaking down!!! Common people,Nigeria has problems but surely we aren't responsible for every negative thing in this world or do you wanna say our runway spoilt the plane cos I've seen nairalanders come up with many ridiculous justifications for the trash they spew out of their smelly gobs about their own country instead of being positive & accepting that life is not perfect & neither is any country!!!
