Anambra Polls: Jega Hits Back At Ngige by ChinoElects: 10:25am On Dec 10, 2013
From FRED ITUA, AbujaChairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega yesterday lampooned those who allegedly called for the outright cancellation of the Anambra State governorship polls.

While acknowledging the fact that the voters’ register used in the conduct of the election might not be a perfect document, Jega said the register was not as bad as some people were strenuously trying to make it appear.

Jega spoke in Abuja during the quarterly meeting with political parties.

Apparently referring to the trio of Chris Ngige of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tony Nwonye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Ifeanyi Ubah of the Labour Party (LP), who had called for the outright cancellation of the controversial gubernatorial election, Jega said: “As we are all aware, complaints were made about the register of voters in the aftermath of the Anambra governorship election, with at least one political party/candidate alleging that the register was lacking in integrity and calling for the cancellation of the election essentially on account of this.

“Let me use this opportunity to categorically affirm that while our register of voters is not perfect, it has requisite integrity and it compares favourably with any register of voters on our continent. It is certainly not as bad as some are strenuously trying to make it appear. Nonetheless, we’ve to keep on improving upon it and we have planned to keep doing so through the continuous voter registration process.”

Speaking on the commission’s preparation ahead of 2015 general elections, Jega called on party leaders, some of whom were present at the parley to contribute their quota in ensuring a hitch-free exercise. He further revealed that beginning from next year, Nigerians above the age of 18 years would be provided the opportunity to be registered.

“Our CVR programme provides an opportunity for registering all those who have become 18 years old since the last registration and it also provides an opportunity for all those with missing essential biometric details on the electronic register to be recaptured.

“INEC offered these opportunities to people in Anambra State in August, preceding the governorship election; regrettably, many didn’t utilise them. As we move towards 2015, we, all stakeholders, have a joint obligation to ensure that the CVR is utilised maximally to update and improve upon our register of voters,” Jega added.

Why can't the Islamic Yorobar Party APC understand that the election has come and gone. That nothing will change the decision of the masses.

That election was rigged in a world class manner. Kudos to Obi,he has perfected the arts of rigging. My only hope is for Obiano to be a better governor. All the candidates were really not impressive. May be in 2019 we would start having more impressive candidates vying for the gubernatorial position.

The only sensible contribution so far. You have spoken objectively and from your heart.

Chino can you answer the following questions specifically?
1. Is it true that the PDP candidate (Tony Nwoye) did not find his name on the register INEC used for the election despite having a valid voters card?
2. Is it true the APGA candidate (Willy Obiano) have more than one voters card, which is an offense in the electoral law as amended?
3. Is it true that the INEC Officer in-charge of Idemili (where the APC candidate came from) was paid to ensure that voting materials did not arrive in time in Ngige's stronghold?
4. Is it true that INEC subsituted the voters register? (In Anambra, there is the 2010 register INEC, a different one used in 2011, another displayed 2 weeks to the election and the one used in the election day - where many valid voters could not find their names)
5. Finally, in light of the above, and INEC admission of irregularities, do you think the result we have now is correct and accurate?

Another objective contribution, its like people with functioning brains are coming in late in contributing!

Let us also remember that this was the same rigging method Obi adopted during the elections for his 2nd Term and it seems he has perfected it while the clueless Jega looks on!

One thing I 've observed is that none of the top contestants said the election was rigged but they only complained about the register. This means that even if all voters from Idemili North & South vote for Ngige, he still not gonna win. So certain!

Your observation is wrong o. I even watched ifeanyi ubah's advert on Ait today. He was thanking the people of anambra for voting for him and he said in clear terms that even though the election was rigged he was still able to pull such vote and this means that if their votes had counted he would have surely won. Let's not forget that Tony Nwonye even called for Jega to resign that he has lost control of Inec and Ngige is in court.
