Before stepping into United States, have it in mind that the naira you own, when converted to dollars becomes a smaller denomination. What state are you relocating to ? Biz in United States is capital intensive if you plan on generating high revenue. If you have less than 10k dollars, buy goods from bulk sellers and then resell them at Flea Market (open mkt). Buy goods from China and then list them on Amazon. If you live in a city populated by blacks, open a small shop to sell Hair extension. If you have close to 20k dollars , consult with your local chambers of commerce and Small Business Association (SBA) agencies . Business in states is transparent, no back door or fraud like Naija. Also look into owning a cleaning service and employ Hispanics to run it for you. I hope this help

Pipsland78: Thanks a lot, I truly appreciate your contribution.

I'm thinking of moving to Houston because of the large Nigerian community in the city as well as the weather, low cost of living, great economy and no income tax.

In terms of business, what do you think of shipping in Nigerian food items from Nigeria to sell in the city, opening a Nigerian restaurant and running a drive-through car wash. These are some others I've been considering.
Texas is a great place to do business. Shipping goods from Naija may require numerous licensing cos FDA is no joke and apart from those you may face steep competition. There are uncountable Naija restaurant in Houston and majority of the Naijas out there go to the known restaurants( finger leaking). I think you should channel your money towards other biz.

Pipsland78: ^^^ So you are saying I should look beyond Nigerian food due to competition...hmmnnn...I've been thinking even the logistics of having to import may be too much for me to handle.

You made mention of selling things on amazon, sounds really good to me cos I guess I can sell virtually anything on amazon and ebay. Would it be profitable to buy such things as toys, hair extension, perfumes, etc from the manufacturers to sell on amazon/ebay?
What about starting a car wash or buying a franchise to clean buildings?
Car wash business in States are mainly attached to Gas stations. Although they have independent car wash places. Always have it in mind thst labor is not cheap in states. In regards ebay or Amazon, you can source for wholesale in China and United States.

Brother come back home and invest your money.

There is much money to be made here. Lebanese, Chinese, Americans and South Africans are coming in to Nigeria to invest and pack our money. You are going to American to compete with smart tech and whiz brains in a saturated environment.

My Brother I am not saying Nigerians are not smart or can't compete with the other guys in US. But it is 3x much harder there than in Nigeria.

What I am saying basically is that the real money is here in Nigeria. Why? Because we have lots of problems and anyone who can solve a fraction of this problems in a millionaire in a jiffy. The only problem is that the economic business policy is not friendly(funding) and its difficult starting out for people who are not used to the terrain but not difficult making money if you do your HOME WORK as an entrepreneur.

Have you taken a look at the Online businesses springing up here and there in Nigeria. Startups are the next big thing if they really solve a problem for a lot of people. Nigeria is just beginning to reap the benefits of the goldmine gradually but the surface is still yet to be scratched.

My brother you need to consider and make the wise choice- if foreigners come here and make a lot of money in our land and go home what does it tell youhuh

I wish you well in any choice you make but remember this words from Bill Gates at all times "If your business is not Online, you are not in Business at all"

Cheers!

Pipsland78: And you consider yourself not smart enough to compete with the very best in the world and so would rather mingle with your kind.
How sad.

Pipsland78: I am the young lecturer who won a visa lottery and planning on relocating to the US for my PhD. You can read all about it here: www.nairaland.com/1518684/relocate-america-keep-lecturing-job
I would appreciate it so much if the good folks in here could advise me on the kind of business to do in the US with minimal initial capital outlay. I am quite enterprising and would prefer starting a business in the US as against being an employee.
What I really wish to know are:
1) What type of business to engage in.
2) Capital outlay for the business.
3) The business strategy or procedure.
4) Expected return on investment.
Thank you and I appreciate you all as always.
Pipsland78.
Most Nigerians in US source their raw food either through the African shops there or through relatives that can either send to them or travell with small quantity.
Nigerian food are expensive out there. You dont need to ship large quantity at first. Start with small quantity
Interact with the african shops, individuals and get to know their specific needs. You will be amazed at what you will discovered.
I once met a couple in Nigeria here that sends Ugu leaf, gari and yam flour to their Nigerian customers which they met during some of their holiday. They are making their cool cash.
You only need to know your customers specific demands and meeting the demands.
The source could be arranged right now that you have the knowledge of food commodities from here. Its easy for you to compare when you get over there
Fresh vegetables like Ugu, Okro, moin moin leaf and others are airlifted every monday and tuesday from the Lagos airport
Small packages that have recipient does not require NAFDAC, and all the unneccesary protocols that usually accompany the bigger ones.
Before you know, you would be making steady income and making arrangement to put all papers in place for bigger quantity shipping
Nigerisn foods are in great demand outside our shores.
There is a big oppourtunity in that
