PUNCH Refutes Premium Times Plagiarism Claim by DonColz1(m): 12:03am On Dec 13, 2013
The online news medium, Premium Times, on Thursday, falsely accused The PUNCH of republishing its version of the letter that former President Olusegun Obasanjo wrote to President Goodluck Jonathan without attribution.
We strongly repudiate this unfounded claim and deplore the online news medium’s recourse to hasty generalization in its bid to claim the moral high ground.
Premium Times was neither the source of the information used in our story nor the source of the text published.
The online medium would have avoided an “ethical flaw”, and served its readers well, if it had been careful to comply with one of journalism’s basic tenets by reaching out to The PUNCH for its side of the story.
This newspaper would have readily shared relevant information pertaining to our story, particularly, the fact that it was obtained from a source in the former President’s office on December 11, 2013 and also provided emails and PDF document containing the 18-page letter in its original form.
That an online news medium publishes a document first does not by any means suggest that it is the only medium (print or online) with the information at the point in time.
Our decision not to state the source of the story was not for the reason stated by the online medium. Indeed, Financial Times (UK) also published the story without stating its source, just like The PUNCH.
PUNCH’s culture of professionalism is its strongest forte. We provide clear attribution when stories are sourced and offer an apology when errors are brought to our notice.

I wonder what Premium Times were feeling like. So they thought Punch would just copy their story like that. Yeye.

Premium Times does not have the monopoly of information. Indeed they are the first to publish the said 18-page letter but that does not preclude other media houses from publishing same.

Do Premium times believe that they are the only one who can have easier and faster access to such information

greatgod2012: Do Premium times believe that they are the only one who can have easier and faster access to such information

[s]Anyone who paid close attention to the way this story unfolded would indeed realise that Premium Times goofed by laying unfounded claims against its competitors.

As someone who usually checks the time-stamps on news articles, I was aware, for instance, that Amaechi's Faction of the NGF already knew about the letter, because the Nation (an opposition newspaper) implicitly referred to its contents in an article it ran 4 days ago - Governors to raise nine questions on economy

Governors are disturbed by the state of the economy, which has remained hazy to them.

They are to raise nine issues on Thursday at the meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), which has not been convened in the past three months.

Many states have complained of being shortchanged in their monthly allocations. Some have been borrowing to pay their workers’ monthly wages, The Nation learnt at the weekend.

Vice-President Namadi Sambo has summoned a NEC meeting, following the governors’ compliant that they are being kept in the dark about the economy’s health.

The nine issues are:
•Is it true that $50billion was unremitted to the Federation Account? Where is the money?
•Is Nigeria is broke or not;
•Why was the NEC consulted before 2014 Budget was presented to the National Assembly;
•How much has Nigeria earned from its oil sales in 2013 and what percentage of the budget is funded by these receipts?
•Is it really true that $5b is missing from Excess Crude Account
•How much oil does Nigeria produce daily?
•Is the benchmark price for oil in the 2013 budget is $79?
•Is it a fact that crude oil was sold at prices that hovered about $110 per day throughout the year?

@eguerrila just go through your post again and kindly edit it to make some sense cos I don't see any confirmation of or claim that nation has seen the news already in that long story you quoted....

rather fallacious by attacking Premium News.

I think Premium Times has a point to certain
degree, nonetheless, Punch should have
acknowledge it for breaking the news. I
understand Punch is claiming he got the
same letter from different source,
notwithstanding , why did Punch Editorial
Board sat on it for too long? Why can’t
Punch break the news first?
News business model is based on integrity,
honor and speed. Lets face it, Premium
Times beat every traditional news media in
Nigeria to the scoop, which forced all other
media house to respond to the development.
Typically, editors in Nigeria Media house
would have killed the story after financial
inducement from Villa. However, Premium
Times did the opposite.
With this development, at least, Punch could
have acknowledged Premium Times
newspaper for beating them to the switch.

Kelechi2020,

I see your point. On reviewing PT's claim again, I can see that it mentions Obasanjo's letter and the one written by Sanusi, which I erroneously referenced. Alright, I will strike out that assertion.

They are both anti-GEJ and are known as APC propaganda machines.

They should both keep quiet and concentrate on their publication of falsehood?

It's inferiority complex. All they know how to do is tribalize issues. Who mentioned Igbo now? Nonsense! Jump the gun every time a POTENTIAL accusation comes up. People like these make the Igbos look suspicious and give the general population a bad name.

giving attribute is only ethics of journalism ONLY if u copy from another site or the source want u to do so by mentioning his/her name. D punch have dr own specific reason 4 not naming d source, d source dat reveal d news to Punch may even be part of GEJ inner crew or OBJ inner crew and d person want to be an anonymous. If any1 is truly interested in d source then shd walk up to punch, premium times or if possible d main writers of such news.
