Onitsha (Anambra) – Dr Tim Anosike, the President of Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, on Friday warned that the Niger Bridge might collapse sooner than envisaged by its designers and engineers.

He made the observation when he spoke in Onitsha, Anambra.

Anosike said that the bridge was being overburdened by the daily traffic gridlocks and had to carry tens of trucks with goods of thousands tonnage each day.

He said that the commencement of the second Niger Bridge was overdue considering the increase in vehicular movement on the bridge in the past five years.

“This chamber will never cease crying to the Federal Government until the construction of the second Niger Bridge is achieved.

“Without this project, the entire life and economic activities of the people in this part of our country are hanging on the balance as the existing bridge can collapse sooner than envisaged.

“We have thought that the critical nature of the project is not something to toy with.

“But very sadly, it has become a strategic weapon for political campaign in the hands of our politicians since time immemorial,’’ he said.

The Federal Government had awarded the construction of the bridge to Julius Berger, but work is yet to start. (NAN)

We can't sit and watch this bridge collapse

Anything to save it

How can Amosun be building over five bridges and neglecting the Niger Bridge?

How can Fashola build the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge among others he's built and not look in the direction of the Niger?

Wickedness at its peak

If nothing is done about this dilapidated Niger bridge before 2015, GEJ will lose a lot of votes from the East. He made a promise to build a second Niger bridge during his campaign and two years have passed with no tangible work being done. cry

30 years of crying to the same worthless FG is not enough? If Fashola can build the best bridge in West Africa in less than 3 years, how come the FG of Nigeria and the governors in the SE can not build a little bridge in 30 years even with their donated electoral votes for the Aso Rock dullard who is obviously taking them for granted...?

How hard is it to build this bridge? Must people die and perish before their corrupt, lazy and incompetent leaders lift a finger?

We have talked about other options to settle this mater here
https://www.nairaland.com/1309992/why-cant-anambra-state-government

If it is important enough seek better options, crying to the FG won't solve it.

It is better the bridge collapses so that biafra can be allowed to come out since it will cut biafra into a separate country like Ibos have always wanted! It is important to mention that Delta State never cries about the bridge, they know its a big relief if the burden of human cargo was reduced by any means! That said, most ibos who are paying taxes in Yoruba land have since figured out that using the bridges in Yoruba land where they pay taxes monthly and fees and enjoy a safe, developed and consistent way of life is better than iboland that has now adopted the republican mantra of no taxes (or is it low taxes) and small government? In essence they are voting with their legs and their wallet! Today, the Lagos governor, Governor Fashola commissioned another agricultural facility that will be churning out 150,000 eggs on the first day early next year and 32 tonnes of cassava! The people shout low taxes, low taxes and come to where their taxes is counting in Yoruba land to pay for better road, better houses, better quality of life and will return for a week or two in December - January! >> wink wink wink

It is just not fair. Is it not possible to do some remedial repairs? Posterity will not forgive Governments, past and present if any disaster occurs. For God's sake what is wrong with this country?

Where is the money or did you keep money in the pocket of the government? Remember that the republican igbos build their infrastructure and not the government, hence a small government and low taxes >> low IGR! Except you collect money from the oil of Nigeria, you cannot build the bridge? Lagos just built a bridge about the length of the one you are crying for FG, don't you have state governments ni? I just want that bridge to drop into the Niger overnight (to reduce casualties).

Amaechi is underrated to be frank. A man that built 10 bridges with three to go. on the ongoing Ogoni-Andon-Unity Road with 800ms as average of their lengths.

Okrika ring road = 2 bridges
Bolo = 2 bridges
Flyovers = 4 flyovers in Port Harcourt
Ndoni = Steel bridge (600m)
Another completed bridge at Woji-Odili (400m) Road in PH
while the one crossing Akpajo (500m) is still going on.

And at at least a culvert in most dualised roads.

He is really underrated.

Presently, 3 bridges are been constructed by RCC in the ongoing Garrison-TransAmadi-Woji-EastWest Road dualisation.

And they want to remove him.

God forbid.

Many of the Anti Amaechi loudmouths on NL are not from his state, they are mainly from the same place where their incompetent leaders can not even sink one borehole.

It's called "bring him down to my level"...you know when your supposed mate is besting you at everything? Rivers state (SS) now putting their once hegemonic neighbours to the screws >>? You'd want to remove the Governor Amaechi before he completely opens up another lead they will never catch up with so they can install someone like Wike or GEJ who did nothing for Bayelsa and doing virtually nothing for the country!

why are our SW neighbors taking medicine for our own headache cheesy cheesy Mischievous lots. The FG must construct that 2NB, its our right. The FG has not even invested 1% in the SE of what they invested in SW. We are talking 2NB here not some lame Fashola bridge. 3MB is currently in bad shape, I dare Fashola to step in and do the needful on that bridge.

How do you build the great River Niger bridge while still incapable of building Amaechi type mushroom bridge even after 30 years of begging?

At this very second, Amaechi's mushroom bridges that he built instead of sitting around crying and begging for 30 years trumps your raggedy and falling apart village bridge.

In fact, we want them to hand it over for proper care and maintenance just like we snatched Ikorodu road way from their incompetent hands, Badagry express is another good example. We don't sit around and cry and beg like destitutes for handouts.

Saying you are not going to lift a finger even if your own people perish on that bridge says alot about you people and your inhumane and anti social ways...

There are many FG projects rotting under the care of Lagos State govt. why not rescue these massive projects first from rot before talking about 3MB. The 3MB is fast decaying and Fashola uses that road everyday. smh

The Niger Bridge, is it more than 2km? The bridges I stated here comebine is more than 15km in lenghth and most of them lies in swampy areas covering 42km ( Andon-Opobo axis plus sand filling 30km) Including Okrika. Is more than the budget of your Niger Bridge.

Enough said.

This is not just your everyday bridge, This bridge takes more traffic than all SS bridges combined so stick your ignorance back to PH.

I wonder what is delaying the construction of the second Niger Bridge upon all rash promises made by successivel Govts since the days of OBJ to GEJ,yet nothing has been done.Ifthis were to be in the Southwest the whole press will be writing about it and Govt would be pressured to do something. In fact such a thing won't happen here in Lag.Its a clear indication that some ppl are more equal than others, such a dilapidated bridge which serves a multilateral economic and geographic importance cannot equally exist in the North and this Govt would turn a blind eye, unequivocally its a clear pointer that some tribes are more important than others. The so called SE senators are all there for their personal aggrandizement.Let Govt wait until it collapses and innocent citizens die before they will respond.

1. This is about your crumbling and falling apart village bridge and not Lagos state or Fashola

2. Lagosians are not facing any imminent danger or about to fall off 3MB like your own people back in your village.

3. 3MB just got shot down and maintained unlike your crumbling village bridge.

4. We'll build our own bridge before begging anybody for 30 years like you beggars.

5. Are we begging anybody for 4thMB which groundwork is progressing as we speak? No

6. We did we beg the FG for 30 years for Ikoyi link bridge and the other ones Fashola built, no we did not

7. You are not saying anything because we know how to snatch FG infrastructures away from them and do our own upgrade and maintenance unlike you 30 years begging people.

8. We snatched Ikorodu road and it's undergoing reconstruction and upgrade as we speak.

9. We snatched Badagry EXPRESS and it's set to be the best road in Nigeria @ 10 lanes with metro rail and BRT access, something your generation including the next 10 generations can not duplicate.

You can huff and puff as much as you want, but the joke is still on you because you still don't have a little bridge even after 30 years of begging, Your people are the ones in danger and not Lagosians.
