NIGERIA LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE (NLI) FUTURE LEADERS SEMINAR

Nominations for the October 2013 Nigeria Leadership Initiative’s Future Leaders has commenced.

The Future Leaders Seminar is a program for emerging public and private sector leaders aged 25 to 35 years and based in Nigeria or the Diaspora. It is a 3-day residential seminar sessions capped by a dinner and the launch of class projects by the seminar participants. At the end of each session, the participants are inducted Associates of NLI.

The Future Leaders Seminar had its inaugural class in 2007 and to date, with support from First Bank, there are currently 247 NLI Associates in Nigeria and in the Diaspora. The Future Leaders Seminar was designed to define the mission of the Nigeria Leadership Initiative (NLI) by creating a growing, global network of credible, accomplished community-spirited Nigerian leaders, committed to taking responsibility for driving positive change in Nigeria and Nigerian communities.

Candidates must be 25-35 years old
They must have exceptio

They must provide a written essay
They must provide two written references

MIT-AFRICA EMPOWERING THE TEACHERS
2013-2014 Call for Applications

Empowering the Teachers is a teaching fellowship that enables outstanding young Nigerian and Ugandan faculty in science and engineering to collaborate with faculty at MIT in developing new curriculum and teaching methods.

The program is offered by MISTI together with its corporate partner Total. The director of the program is Professor Akintunde Ibitayo Akinwande, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT.

Description

Empowering the Teachers will select up to twelve outstanding young faculty fellows from the disciplines of electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering and mechanical engineering in Nigerian or Ugandan universities to spend a semester at MIT in 2014. Selected fellows will observe instruction in their disciplines and work as a group to prepare innovative curricula and approaches to teaching that can be introduced into their home universities on their return.

During their stay at MIT, the faculty will participate regularly in at least two MIT subjects (including lectures, recitations and tutorials) that correspond to courses the faculty members teach at their home universities. They will attend weekly Empowering the Teachers Fellows Seminar meetings on curriculum development and meet with professors and teaching assistants. Beyond the fellowship semester at MIT, Empowering the Teachers will support online communications, periodic reunions and meetings in Nigeria and Uganda in order to build over time a community of faculty devoted to excellence and innovation in science and engineering education.

The Empowering the Teachers program covers travel, living and instructional materials expenses of the participants. The home universities of the successful applicants will commit to provide paid leaves of absence during the period of the MIT program.
Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration for selection, a faculty member must hold a PhD and teach in a department corresponding to Electrical Engineering and Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering at a university in Nigeria or Uganda. Only candidates at the level of Lecturer One will be considered.

GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIPS

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are prestigious, highly competitive full-cost scholarships. They are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.

ELIGIBILITY:

You can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if you are:

a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom.
applying to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study at the University of Cambridge: PhD (three year research-only degree); MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree); or a one year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA etc.)
OR already a student at Cambridge and want to apply for a new postgraduate course. For example, if you are studying for an MPhil you can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to do a PhD. However, if you have already started a course, you cannot apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to fund the rest of it.
OR already a Gates Cambridge Scholar and want to apply for a second Scholarship. You must apply by the second, international deadline and go through the same process of departmental ranking, shortlisting and interviewing as all other candidates.

TRECHT EXCELLENCE SCHOLARHIPS

The Utrecht Excellence Scholarship offers a number of highly talented prospective students the opportunity to pursue a degree in a selected number of fields at Utrecht University:

International Bachelor’s programmes:

Economics and Business Economics
Liberal Arts & Sciences at University College Utrecht
International Master’s programmes offered by the following Graduate Schools:

Graduate School of Geosciences
Graduate School of Humanities
Graduate School of Law, Economics and Governance
Graduate School of Life Sciences
Graduate School of Natural Sciences
Graduate School of Social and Behavioural Sciences
Amount of scholarship

Selected students are awarded a scholarship up to 28 350 euro per year. Students should be aware that the grant is not necessarily a full scholarship, and that it may be necessary to find additional funding to be able to finance study and stay completely. As one of the requirements for being granted a residence permit in the Netherlands, students from abroad must prove to the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Office) that they have sufficient financial means. Read more about the budget the University advises.

Eligibility criteria

The applicant must meet the eligibility criteria in order to be considered for this scholarship. The applicant should:

Not have the Dutch or an EU/EEA nationality;
Hold a non-Dutch secondary school diploma;
Have been admitted to an International Master’s programme within one of the Graduate Schools mentioned above, the Bachelor’s programme in Economics and Business Economics or to University College Utrecht;
Hold a relevant Bachelor’s degree (for a Master’s programme) or secondary school diploma (for a Bachelor’s programme), or an equivalent thereof;
Be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch visa;
Failure to meet one or more of these criteria automatically means the student is not eligible for this scholarship

Application

It is not possible to apply for the Utrecht Excellence Scholarship. The selection committee of the programme will select eligible candidates on the basis of the selection criteria mentioned above. The selected candidates will be offered an Utrecht Excellence Scholarship at the latest in May.

Please note that students starting their programme in February are not eligible for the Utrecht Excellence Scholarships.
