Imo Government has reiterated its commitment towards realizing the objective of setting up the Onitsha Road Industrial Estate, which is to attract functional industries to the state.
Commissioner for Industry and Non-Formal Sector, Bar. (Lady) Ugochi Nnanna-Okoro, in a press release, disclosed that government has no intention of leaving any space at the layout fallow as she enjoined allotees to commence effective development or risk revocation of their occupancy right.
Barr. Nnanna-Okoro, who frowned at a situation where land speculators acquire government land without any serious intention to develop it, described the practice as detrimental to genuine investors and accordingly gave an ultimatum of January 2014 for the allotees to show presence or forfeit the allocation.
According to Lady Nnanna –Okoro, who was on a fact-finding tour of the Onitsha Road Industrial Layout, the Rescue Mission Administration is in a hurry to industrialize Imo State, stressing that the policy thrust of Governor Rochas Okorocha is to use the Industry and Non-Formal Sector to provide massive employment opportunities and to stimulate the economy of the state.
But the few industrialists in the area noted that neglect of the industrial layout by virtually all administrations coupled with insecurity, lack of amenities and the deplorable state of roads were discouraging to prospective industrialists.
In another development, Commissioner Ugochi Nnanna-Okoro has vowed to revive moribund industries in the state by engaging all stakeholders in positive dialogue.
The Industry and Non-Formal Sector Commissioner, who announced this during an on-the-spot assessment visit to Resin Paint Industries Aboh Mbaise expressed disappointment at the level of dilapidation of the once-vibrant factory, which used to manufacture high quality paint and allied products, pledging to address the legal and financial impediments holding back the reopening of the company.
