The Power In The Tongue: Its Positive And Negative Effects. by todayguest(m): 9:41am On Dec 23, 2013
"The Tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. See how great a forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. . . . ." James 3:5,6. "The tongue is a fire" There is power in the tongue. No matter how highly placed. How often we realize this, will save us from so much avoidable problems. Unarguably, its misuse or abuse, cuts across all races, religions, tribes and communities. Infact, we are all guilty of it. Parents have used it, to either built or destroyed their children. Religious leaders have used it, to bless or curse their followers. Politicians have often applied it maliciously against one another. Employees have also used it to mar the careers of their superiors or subordinates. No doubt, its careless use had been the cause of wars. It had promoted hatred, spread lies, torn families and broken relationships. No one had escaped its effects! However, there are reasons why we misuse its power. Amongst them are, uncontrolled anger, pride, selfishness, hatred, bias. Prominent of all --ignorance. There is an adage " the injury caused by a matchete will get healed someday; but the injury caused by a careless word never gets healed " Nevertheless, there are few practical ways that had helped many used its power properly and effectively. They are: by being a good listener, humility, being tolerant, being quick to hear;slow to speak and choosing words carefully. Moreso, are there benefits in its proper use? Yes. It helped many earned the respect of others. Settled quarrels. Being forgiven. Had saved lives and averted conflicts. Most importantly, had brought peace. The New Year is around the corner. Lets make it our resolve to use the power in our tongue wisely. For a better society to live in. Remain blessed.
