Rivers State Government made free education compulsory to all children of school age in the state, Kano state Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso just declared free and compulsory education at all levels in the state during the presentation of 2014 appropriation bill to the House of Assembly revealed that the gesture would commenced from 2014 academic year. Education has been high priority in several APC controlled states.

Legislators in Kano are already working on a reciprocity law which would enable 'indigenes' of other states to enjoy this benefit provided that Kano State indigenes receive reciprocal treatment in those states with the limitation certain stipulations currently being worked out.

The details being worked out regarding the reciprocity mentioned, will become mute as APC will implement the free education program nation-wide. Additionally, the platform will require that every Nigerian obtains a Primary school education with jail terms for parents who do not make their children available for the said education. All 400+ Almajiri school initiated by the current government will incorporate convention educational programs in addition to Islamic teachings.

Funding this program should not be a problem once import waivers totaling N700billion in 2013 alone are eliminated, and corruption is put in check, as Ribadu and Buhari are known to be capable of doing. To those who do not yet understand that the ongoing effort to unseat PDP is very real and essentially unstoppable, and to the doubting Thomases among us, I say just wait and see what 2014 will bring.

For now, I say congratulations in advance to APC if indeed Free Education is included in its platform as expected.

I don't think free education can work in state owned tertiary institutions controlled by APC government. I suggest it should be subsidized or scholarships awarded. Using LASU as an example, it might not work.

It should be 100% subsidized as done in other oil rich nations, we have enough money to do this, don't be fooled. Free education means no one will be prevented from attending state owned tertiary institutions because of money. Specific ways to implement such a program can be worked out.

As usual, you tend to pursue your lines of illogicality. Nobody has ever said that there should be no comprehensive room for free-education and job-creation. The problem is that the room for unemployed graduates in Nigeria is apparently overheated. It is not prudent to talk about adding combustible ingredients to already overheated room. I simply ask that governments in Nigeria should strive to strike equilibrium in terms of producing graduates and creating of jobs.

Once again, it is sad for me to state that most of you are quite ignorant of how blessed Nigeria is, in both natural and human resources. It is this ignorance that makes well meaning people like you to believe that it is not possible to offer quality education, freely to Nigerians.

I challenge you to do a small research on how much money has been stolen by government officials in 2013 alone and limit your research to proven thefts only (news paper accounts or court records could be used). Then add the amount of crude oil stolen in the same year, then add the over N700 billion lost as a result of import waivers issued by the ministry of finance. You'll soon find out that if only 10% of the sum is channeled properly, there will be enough to provide the said quality education freely to Nigerians.

A regime change will make this obvious soon enough. Folks, we are on the verge of the greatest level of development ever experienced in our history and the good news is that providence is on the side of Nigerians.

So they decided to make education free, how do they want to finance it? Nobody knows, but when the Governors announced their plans, the crowd must have hailed them as heroes!!!!
So if they can't get good finance, all our institutions will be turned into mere secondary schools. They won't get the right allocation, ASUU won't have any good reason not to shutdown the universities, etc...
Common basic education they haven't implemented properly, ignorance is at its highest despite the computer revolution...
I prefer a group of people who have an ideology (capitalist , liberalist, or socialist), rather than the senseless political election time talk by our silly politicians (I'll build roads, I'll make education free, I'll boost the economy, I'll improve power supply, etc)...

Contrary to your beliefs of negativity and deceitfulness, one of the major contributors to societal ills and decadents is lack of employment for school leavers. Until Nigeria has put in place solid plans to grant gainful employment to its school leavers, the talk of free education is a hogwash.
