BABY CHRISTIAN a term used to refer to a new convert in the Lord, regardless of the period of time the believer has " supposedly " being a Christian. It's okay if one is a baby Christian, after all, even human life begins from the infancy stage. in fact, all men of God you see or hear about were babies sometime ago. The amount of time one spends being a baby Christian is the real deal.
Apostle Paul made some comments about the Corinthians that refused to leave the infancy stage.
"And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto Carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not to bear it, neither yet now are ye able" (1 Cor 3:1-2)
Paul in the above verses tells the Corinthians his concerns about them. Having just received the gospel anew, he refers to them as 'babes in Christ'. Some other versions have that phrase as 'mere infants in Christ' and 'children in the Christian faith'. He fed them with milk since that's the only food babies can digest easily. milk here may mean praying and fasting for them, condoning some actions which may not be sinful but at the same time not useful, advising them on most matters etc. Those things were okay initially. However, there was a time he expected them to have grown and they hadn't. He was unhappy just as a mother will be unhappy if her 2 year old hasn't started walking. just as Paul felt, our seniors in the Lord and even Jesus feel that way when a Christian refuses to grow. Note the word 'refuse'. Most people do not grow in the faith because they are lazy. having fellowship with God daily
is a hard task, talk less of attending corporate fellowships and discipleship seminars.
growing out of this spiritual infancy stage doesn't occur easily. in fact, it doesn't occur normally except a deliberate effort is made by the Christian. then having faith in God to crown all efforts is also required.
As a baby Christian, one should aim primarily at becoming like Christ. know that you can't know everything about the Christian faith and you'll learn new things daily till you die.
To grow, you need to study the Bible having a very humble and teachable heart. always ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand as you read. diligent Bible study enables you to know how Jesus, our perfect example, lived while He was on earth so you can imitate Him. A daily Bible study guide may be of help.
praying and fasting are also avenues through which growth can be achieved. praying is simply communing with God. As a baby Christian, it will do you a whole lot of help to learn the habit of praying at a young stage. know that God is everywhere and you can pray anytime and anywhere. fasting is abstaining from food, friends, entertainment, pleasured etc showing how bad you want something from God. God will be so pleased if we fast and pray to know Him more.
do not forsake the assembly of the saints. attend fellowship and Christian gatherings often. you'll learn a lot by sharing ideas and experiences with one another.
always obey God's word promptly and totally. Gladly accept the advice of Christians that are more mature in the Lord. However, do not always do what anyone tells or preaches without checking it with God's word no matter how 'anointed' the person is.
Do unto others only what you'll like them to do to you.
God bless you. Have a wonderful 2014!!!
