Reviewing the life and times of Nelson Mandela, I was wondering what the situation would have been if he was born in Nigeria

It is possible that the struggle he led could have been turned to a tribal one

It is possible that many politicians could have condemned his struggle. They could argue that the country might be better under the apartheid system and point to many independent African countries that were being mismanaged.

Perhaps his greatest opposition could come from Christiandom. Many would argue that he did not believe in God or at best was not a practising christian. The Christian leaders could argue that God has placed those at the helm of affairs there and therefore God will remove them at his time. others could argue that he was not able to effectively manage his family ( as he divorced twice) and could therefore not be expected to manage the county.

It is possible that the apartheid regime could have compromised him either by inducement or blackmail or both.

There could have been sponsored trips all over the world confirming the acceptance of the 'generality' of the people to the status quo and presentation of statistics to authenticate same.

However maybe the above is the 'old Nigeria'. The new Nigerians would not do any of these and would do the same if not more than the South Africans did. Perhaps . . .

It depends on where in Nigeria he was born. What I know is that Mandela is a Pacifist. If he was in Ojukwu's shoes, he won't have called for secession. H won't have been a military head of state either as he is not power-obsessed. He would have been a great man all the same. Nigeria really did not have much to fight for. Independence was given to us on a platter of gold. We are out own enemies.
