JOHESU Declares 5-day Warning Strike From Jan 15 by yemmy75(m): 2:54am On Jan 07, 2014
The Joint Health Sector Unions, in league with the Assembly of Health Sector Professionals, yesterday, directed its members to proceed on a 5-day warning strike from Wednesday January 15, to Tuesday January 21, 2014, except government addresses their grievances through constructive dialogue.

Stating their grievances/prayers in a jointly signed position paper presented on contemporary developments in the health sector, the workers, comprising pharmacists, nurses, physiotherapists, radiographers and laboratory scientists among others, insisted that the dialogue with the President is the minimum and non-negotiable conditionality, as the President, who they described as “the father of the nation”, must be willing to give all his children a listening ear in a conflict that continues to fester as a rotten and infected wound.

Spokesperson of the group, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, Pharm Olumide Akintayo, warned: “In the event that government does not enter into meaningful dialogue within two weeks of this notice, we shall be left with no option than to commence a more excruciating and total nationwide strike to enforce our liberties.

Noting that the declaration was a follow-up to the expiration of the 15-day ultimatum earlier given, Akintayo stated: “We call on all men and women of goodwill to admonish government on the need to urgently redress this avoidable crisis it has also assisted to worsen.”

why waiting till Jan 15th? These people can't be serious. It's time they knew they are not indispensable. Let them bring it on.

we all know that JOHESU members articulate 80percent of hospitals' services.

The game has just began....we shall see who is indispensable.

-I see JOHESU shutting down all Public/private hospital pharmacies. No more drugs for patients.

-I see JOHESU shutting down all Nursing services. No more nursing care for patients that pee and poo on their beds.

-I see JOHESU shutting all Physiotherapy clinics. Motor/Okada accident patients undergoing rehabilitation will be in pains.

-I see JOHESU shutting all Radiography departments. Physical therapy can not commence without Imaging and X-ray.

-I also see JOHESU shutting down the wards. No patient will be admitted even in emergency cases.

-I see JOHESU shutting down the medical records department, patient clinical history and therapy records will not be accesible. Treatment will at best be done based on guess work and that is if treatment will be possible at all.

-I see JOHESU shutting all laboratories including Blood banks. Women in labor, Pre-operative patients, accident victims, Dialysis patients and Neonates with jaundice may not survive this.

May God avert all these....but if these Professionals are unimportant and useless, JOHESU won't be this powerful.

JOHESU is NMA's 'frankeinstein creature'. Their overbearing attitudes were their tools.

Peace!

Yea... True.

But I'm sure if u ask the patients, who are the consumers of these services, they would by far prefer a 1-yr JOHESU strike to a 1-wk NMA strike.

Of course you may be right, the patients hardly experience JOHESU strikes because their members are humane and hardly use the life of patients as bargaining chips for administrative and political power like the MBBS guys do incessantly, so they ( the patients) hardly know what a JOHESU strike feels like.....maybe that's about change.

Healthcare is not an exclusive preserve of any group of people everybody is an equal stakeholder.
80% of professional duties are carried out by JOHESU professionals. We just pray people don't die.

I'm a proprietor in the private health sector and have NMA members as personal friends and Biz partners, of course we argue here and there but the fact remains that JOHESU professionals go through hell in the Public sector.

Doctors might be 20% of the total health staff but they give out 70% of the total functions of the hospital whereas Johesu members, though 80% of staff capacity, contribute 30% of hospital functions.

when the lab scientists are not around, the pathologists can function effectively.
When the radiographers are not around, the radiologists are present.
Pharmacists only dispense drugs, so their work can be easily handled.
Nurses are d only group doing something meaningful but the house officers can serve in their stead momentarily.

In a nutshell, Hospital functions are performed mainly by the doctors and assisted by the nurses. Other Johesu members do more of fringe works.

Exactly what I've been trying to say!

Maybe the reason why JOHESU doesn't go on strike too often is because they know they won't be missed, not because they care about patients' lives more than the doctors... #justsaying

Cos I don't see any group of health workers that cares more about the well-being of the patients than the doctors

Thank u so much dozzybaba.... U hit the nail hard on the head. Yemmy23... I can feel your ignorance about the workings of hospitals. It is time the public is educated on who is doing what. They have long been fed with fallacy from never-up-to date thing called NMA. Nigerians reserved the right to be correctly informed and know all the professionals that manage them them in the hospitals....
They must know that the Pharmacists are experts in drugs....so all prescriptions are never successful without them.
Nurses own the patients.... No Nurses....no admission. No admission...no comprehensive care.

Physiotherapists are Neurons-musculoskeletal practitioners. The last time I checked...all fractured patients never felt treated without the skill of a physio. No movement no life because motion is life.

Lab sciencetists....are clinical investigators. There is no modern medical practice without the lab scientist. They make diagnosis possible.evidence based practice is anchored on the appropriateness of diagnosis.

Imaging scientists... The radiograhers.....the indispensable ally in trauma, no imaging ...no surgery etc.....

The developed nations understand the importance of all.... By spending several millions of dollars to train these professionals
and go extra miles each year to bring in foreign professionals as they have continued to be in acute shortage.

What do we get in Nigeria....NMA wants to eliminate them on the alter of ego and sentiment not minding the grave consequence this protend to our nation and people.

We must all say no to the cancer in health sector.
Stay blessed.

I'm not trying to down-play the importance of JOHESU to the health system here... Of course we all know that all parts of the health system complement one another, and none can function effectively in the absence of another. All I'm saying is that the allied health workers should not feel more important than they really are. Even in the developed world, there is no controversy about who the leader of the health team is, and the heights reached by the allied health workers is due to years of proven diligence, consistency, and mutual respect between the doctors and them.

Here, what we have is JOHESU trying to take over the health system as if its their birth right.

IMO, there's nothing wrong in JOHESU producing the Minister of Health or Surgeon-General if they actually EARN it.

Just by the way, I've never seen a pharmacist in a government hospital render any other service to a patient asides dishing out drugs (in contrast to what u said above)

Merci...

For your information, nobody is out on superiority contest here. Health professionals are the most satisfied with there job among various career in Nigeria. There is no doubt about that. Google across the world you will find same thread. You may check CNN most satisfying profession 2012/13. So JOHESU members are very happy people.
But, how do you handle NMA telling govt to withdrawal our allowances using the minister of health, that govt should stop recognizing health professionals as ''consultant'' against international norm, that only doctors must head hospitals in nigeria against best practices globally, that skipping of level 10 should stop despite years of collective agreement on it. That our specialists who are already being paid specialist allowance should be delisted.I can go on and on.

There may not be peace in health sector until NMA become realistic in its thought and embrace global beast practices.

Yemmy78....u can see no one is in superiority match here. Aferall there is no major diff in doctors salary and that of health professionals.......COMMESS vs CONHESS educated u more on this.
So why should NMA be having trouble with others structure and welfare.?

before conmess, were doctors and pharmacists earning the same? NO.there was a reason for that.today that relativity does not apply but it WILL be restored. Doctors SHOULD be paid more.no where In the world do they earn the same and that fact must be respected.

Salary issue is another area we have to consider. Salary is worked out based on the nature of d profession, job evaluation, total hours of schooling, total hours of work input etc. In d medical profession, surgeons earn more than physicians in US,Britain n other developed countries. Other allied health professionals earn far less than d physicians. The lowest salary is earned by Paediatrician/ psychiatrist ( average of $200,000 per annum) while the highest salary is received by Orthopaedic surgeon/ Neurosurgeon/ Cardiothoraxic Surgeons (average of $550,0000 per annum).

Nurses receive average salary of $90,000 per annum, pharmacist is on average salary of $110,000per annum, Physiotherapist $75,000, Lab scientists receive 75-80,000 per annum.

The salary disparity should be addressed ASAP following the relativity ( or ratio) stated above. Lets encourage d ongoing revolution in the healthcare system to bring the much needed change.

for those who dont know, the relativity used to be 4:2:1.7 for the doctor, pharmacist and nurses/other health professionals respectively.but this has been eroded and is not proper.
Re: JOHESU Declares 5-day Warning Strike From Jan 15 by bumfem: 4:43pm On Jan 07, 2014
@phantom.... I can see your worries. Relativity is a creation of Olikoye kuti. It was a military fiat. That was why it went off in flame. Relativity in your contest is dead forever in Nigeria.

@okey.... You are far from been correct. Those figures are meant for doctors who are specialist. In the US, u do not practice independently until after your residency. Resident doctors in the US earn in range of 30,000-40,000 USD. So they never earn up to nurses. Not like Nigeria where residents want to earn all
Pls be mindful of what u post in here.

Paediatrician, Psychiatrist, Neurosurgeon etc are all specialists. They are not resident doctors. Resident doctors are the ones undergoing training to become consultants(specialists). When they become consultants, the total hours of training is factored into their salary .

Note, the stated salaries of allied health workers are for their most senior staff.

Meanwhile, d relatively must be restored or let the health institutions be privatised. U have to earn according to ur input

simple as ABC.what do the pharmacists do in our hospitals other than dispense drugs?how is this different from what the road side chemist does? How many of them have advised doctors on drug therapy which they claim they do? Our pharmacists dont research.sickle cell disease is a problem here.have pharmacists gone into research to discover new drugs? All they do is get the formulation from foreign companies and rebrand. This pain seems to av taken a serious hold on u.

Pharmacists don't do research? R u freaking kidding me? Who discovered NICOSAN for the treatment of Sickle cell disease? Who? Pharmacists in NIPRD under Prof Gamaliel did, go do ur research. A pharmacist wasn't recently able to mask the taste of metronidazole syrup or so. So shut the trash up boy!!! U ignorant fellow.. Ask questions b4 u decide to spew trash.. My pharmchem lecturer was able to synthesize a pro-drug from snake venom and the research won't come to limelight in a long while, do u know aw many phases these new drugs av to pass through and how many years it takes

Pharmacists in the industries do research from time to time to have dis drugs better formulated, better absorbed and better taste especially the syrup without affecting the subjective factors that affects the drug's stability and durability. U say
.

Pharmacists are the most underutilized health professionals, they want to be on the wards to see the patients and review their medications. Who kicked against it? U silly doctors. U don't want anyone to criticize ur prescriptions. U arrogant bunch of higher animals. I agree hospital pharmacists are another lazy bunch of homo sapiens, deyll sit in the so-called dispensary and just dispense. Buh the role of doctors can be unsaid. Who kicked against the PharmD program? Nonsense!! Go to Igbobi and see what happens there for urself. U want to see us on the wards full time? Let the program live. FOH!!! So u see, we av done our jobs even under these circumstances.

Medical doctors should let other health professionals be!!!

All they do is get the formulation from foreign companies and rebrand. R u kidding? Av u heard of Iba mixture? Grab that drug and check out its phytochemistry. We are indigenous even in the face of fact that the government hasn't sponsored pharmaceutical research enough. So shut the trash up once again and concentrate on ur job.Instead, U DOCTORS AV NOT DONE UR JOBS. We are tired of going to India for surgeries, up ur game and leave the pharmacists alone!!!

Medical doctors should let other health professionals be!!!

@okey....I can appreciate your struggling to keep pace with me in this matter. You can re-read my post. I never too a resident doc for a specialist. A resident is a doc on training in the US and they never earn up to nurses. Take advantage of cheap mobile internet and verify this fact.
Specialists are our consultants in Nigeria. Family physician annual take home is around 120,000USD to about 135,000usd depending on the location. Yes physicians salaries varies from that figure to up to about 350,000usd depending on the specialty.

You are not correct by saying senior health professionals earn the figures u posted. U do not get anything by not being sincere bc u want to make a point.
New PharmD grad gets around the figure u posted i.e 110,000usd,, new Doctor of physio (DPT) grad makes around 80,000usd and nurses about 65,000usd out of schl.
We must not forget that this figures varies largely among those professionals that own or co owner of clinic ,especially the DPT in the US.
