Cristiano Ronaldo Should Win The 2014 FIFA Ballon d'or by thegoodjoehunt(m): 8:27pm On Jan 07, 2014
This award actually means nothing. Even Cristiano Ronaldo himself would rather win the Champions League. But still, the FIFA and the whole football world owe Cristiano Ronaldo some appreciation.

[b]Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 62 goals since January 1st, 2013. Messi is not having a good time on the pitch and he will be out until next January. Therefore, he simply will not be able to match Cristiano Ronaldo's 2013 record. Some could argue that Franck Ribéry should be the one who raises the golden ball because of Bayern Munich's achievements, but his 16 goals in the 2012-2013 season will not help their case.

The FIFA Ballon D'Or is an award given to an individual player, not a team. It goes without saying that Bayern Munich was the best European team in 2013, but there was not better player than Cristiano Ronaldo. Yes, he didn't win a single trophy with Real Madrid. But Sneijder did win the UEFA Champions League, the Serie A and the Coppa D'Italia -and also being the runner-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup with Netherlands- and still finished 4th in the voting. Therefore, the FIFA should make a clear list of criteria available to determine what kind of accomplishments are considered to win the award. But again, if we take a look at  the previous Ballons D'Or to Lionel Messi, we could end up believing that only individual records and performances are examined.

Still, FIFA President Sepp Blatter's recent comments could certainly influence those who vote -captains, journalists and national coaches-. But it's also true that the FIFA could try to prove that there's nothing behind those comments. Maybe Blatter helped Cristiano Ronaldo, after all. Because, all things considered, it would be questionable not to give him the award. It could even be dubious, and it would help those conspiracy theories that believe there's a campaign against the Portuguese star.

One could say that it wouldn't be unfair to give the 2014 FIFA Ballon D'Or to Ribéry. But it would show how unfair it was not to give the 2011 one to Wesley Sneijder. We can only hope for Cristiano Ronaldo to play the way he's doing it since the season started. And maybe, the world of football will finally acknowledge how big of a legend he is. As Blatter said, "Cristiano Ronaldo is like a commander in the field of play." He's making both Real Madrid and football better with his performances and his desire to improve and excel everyday.

A true leader. Someone who deserves to win more individual awards than Michael Owen, Pavel Nedved, Fabio Cannavaro or Hristo Stoichkov.
