Why are we so lame in generating revenue in Nigeria? Is it because we rely so much on oil money.

For eg:
I read a thread in Nairaland that for you to drive a vehicle with tinted windows, all you gotta do is pay 25k permit for the life span of that vehicle. which country on earth does that? why should the transport ministry rely on the govt to support them when they can raise enough money from issuing a drivers license that has an EXPIRING date, a tinted window permit that has an EXPIRING date.

Many Nigerians are buying SUV's now instead of sedans and those vehicles are not energy friendly but the govt is not doing anything to curtail this trend by increasing the taxes for SUV owners. How can you subsidize imported petrol with our oil money and allow only those that can afford SUV's to enjoy a lion share of it without making them pay a little more for your subsidy or do they think the little extra taxes they collect from the port of entry is good enough?

What about states and local governments? MOT inspection is a dead activity in Nigeria and the jobs it created went away with it. Local taxes for vehicle registration should be annually for private vehicle owners. Do you know how much the Lagos state govt will generate from making that law annually and how much the amount raised can sustain that ministry?

Must the police improve and rely solely on the govt for their salaries and maintenance when they can generate about 30% of their maintenance fee legally from motorists by enforcing these laws? when will we learn to be independent in Nigeria without waiting for govt to do it all?

taxing suv owners doesn't make sense, they already pay the price at the pump

there is an array of taxes in lagos, everyone from taxi drivers to land owners to market women have to pay taxes in lagos. it's much harder to evade tax now in lagos and the state's internally generally revenue is one of the highest in nigeria.

licensing fees are payed to the council and not the police. the nigerian police by the way has it's standardized 20naira tax grin

No, because the fuel in Nigeria is highly subsidized. If there was no subsidy, you can say that.
