Militants reject Niger Delta ministry From Soji Ajibola and Bolaji Ogundele - 12.09.2008 MILITANTS in the Niger Delta region have rejected the proposed creation of a ministry of Niger Delta, saying the move was “another way of stealing money.” The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), in a reaction to the development, said ministries that had existed before now had been massive failures and avenues for some people to enrich themselves. In an online reaction by the group sent by its spokesman, Jomo Gbomo, MEND said it was “not impressed as this is not addressing the root issues of the unrest in the region. All existing ministries to date are fraught with incompetence, corruption and bureaucracy. “Take the ministries of health, works and education for example. These ministries are over 40 years old but have failed to deliver. The president himself does not have faith in the health care system, almost all the top government functionaries send their children overseas for studies and the roads are death traps for travellers. “So, establishing a ‘ministry’ for the Niger Delta is another way of stealing money. "The people of the region should receive this latest dish with apprehension. It will be yet another avenue for corruption and political favouritism,” it said. What a shame that it takes pple that are making pple to look thru the nozzle of barrels to tell how disappointing Nigerian ministries has been. Any lil headache, they wanna go to even India for treatment. |
