Since the inception of the world cup in 1930 till date, so many wonderful, breathtaking goals have been scored by great players, goals one can only but dream of.

Though no one can say he/she has watched all the previous WC matches, so my choice of WC best goal will be limited to the matches that I have seen either live or on tape.

Many fans regard Maradona's second goal against England in the 1986 WC in Mexico as the best WC goal, personally I feel that many fans have not had the privilege of watching what I consider my best WC goal.

It is the Carlos Alberto Torres' thunderbolt in Brazil's 4 - 1 demolition of the "masters of defence," Italy, in the 1970 WC final. Nine Brazilians were involved in the build up to that goal with Pele setting the stage for team captain Torres' blinder to the far post.

To my mind, the goal is probably deserving of FIFA's award as the most beautiful goal in WC history.

Sometimes it may not be only the English that could be idiots, the goal by Michael Owen against Argentina in 1998 probably comes to mind,

The English are the most culpable remeber ronaldinho on Ashley cole, Ronaldinho on Seaman, Argentine Free kick scored by Zanetti in that same match, Zidane's free kick in Euro 2004 to mention a few.

I will go with Socrates' goal against Italy in 1982.
The way Zico and Socrates combined to create that goal is absolutely brilliant.
Brazil went on to lose the match 2-3 to the Azurris but the way Socrates planted Dino Zoff on his ass was PEACH!!!

I think Owairan`s goal was a fluke.That of Maradona was more like it.

There was a goal scored bya Mexican, Negrette(hope the spelling is right) in the 1986 world cup held in Mexico.
It was a hopeful cross from the right wing and the lad connected with a side bicycle kick which flew into the net after hitting the bar.

It's got to be Maradona's solo effort vs England.It was unthinkable back then to round half a squad,and it's even more difficult to do such again these days.And it was at the World Cup, when World cups meant the tough matches at every stage.

Van Basten's volley against USSR at Euro 88 was more of stunning than beautiful, but a great goal all the same.the angle from which he struck the ball was out of this world.

Zidane's volley  vs Leverkusen was sweet.The way he set himself up,the actual striking of the ball,the way the ball hit the net, awesome.!

I would have agreed with you if i hadnt seen lionel messi's goal in the match between barcelona and getafe 2 or 3 seasons ago. But nontheless, it was a great goal

It was a wicked goal in a wicked match that almost saw Korea equalize against the Mighty German Machine.It was after that match i knew for sure that German side couldn't retain their crown

The German's still had the pedigree to hold on for the win while the English would have crumbled

That Borghetti's goal reeks of class. Buffon was rooted to the spot.

That Borgetti's goal was something else he nodded the ball in an opposite direction with his back to goal i have not seen such in my life

I think the Maradona "Hand of God" goal (1986 QF against England) is my favourite just for the sheer audacity of it all. Like imagine getting away with that today. Maradona was magic or a god.
