German-born Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has posited that the round 16 clash between the Flying Eagles of Nigeria, champions of Africa and Germany, the European champions in FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand will be an interesting match to watch.

Nigeria’s Leon Balogun tackles Bayern Munich’s David Alaba in a Bundesliga match
In a chat with footballlive.ng at the Eagles camp in Kaduna the Darmstadt 98 defender says he sees the Flying Eagles soaring high against the Germans to book a place in the quarter -finals of the tournament.

“I think it’s going to be very interesting because I think the German youths have become stronger in recent years but Nigeria especially the U20S and U17s have always been strong teams and have always been candidates for the finals”

“Physically, I think the Nigerian team is stronger than the Germans and that always count because its important so I think it’s going to be interesting but I see Nigeria making it”

The flying Eagles qualified to the round of 16 on the backdrop of a 4-2 loss to Brazil in the group opener but bounced back to maul Korea DPR 4-0 and Hungary 2-0 in the second and last group games.

Nigeria is aiming to emulate Ghana’s victorious outing back in 2009 when Egypt hosted the tournament and became the first African side to win the trophy till date.

lmao, i didnt say they arent tough but our motivation isnt always there. We go for the ultimate and when we dont get it, bronze doesnt matter to us. Btw, there's no way mali will beat us in an afcon qualifier, group match or a fifa worldcup qualifier.

i know d crew will do d needful. But our guys will strike them like lightening within 90mins come tomorow. The only time this team played 90mini wit out a goal was during d u-17 AYC championship against d Ivory coast. As long as our defence is not letting in goals i'm sure by God's grace our attack will deliver. Fly Super flying Eagles
our attack always deliver, i don't remember a match when we fail to score a goal in regulation time, and mind u we hardly score one, we score more than a goal in matches. tomorrow will not be an exception.

Manu goes for a hardworking lineup again. I think an iheanacho would have given more bite to a less than inspiring forward line.

Hmm... My favourite Ifeanyi or in-form Sokari... . Who ganna start?... . Well #manuknowsbest

Mattew and Sokari can start together.. in fact, i believe it would suit the Germany match the best.. the simple tactics will be to permanent the full backs and the DMF at their duty post while the rest do the attacking.. the opposition full back will also be afraid to join the attack when they realize you have 5 attackers readily available to counter you on the break.. the wing forward should also support the defense the they lost the ball..

Since yahaya's rabona skill.. . The eagles have been dry entertainment wise.... Now I really miss Ifeanyi Mathew, He is way more talented than Sokari- at last I have seen Sokari play. Sokari is a good player and strive on short passes- But ifeanyi is just a joy to watch on football.. . His ball juggling, outrageous dummies, slide rule passing, Marseille roulette and step overs. .. It was unfortunate he went cold in the game against brazil.... But I just wanna revel in his tricks..

Nacho got some touch too and of course yahaya gave that beautiful rabona skill

I wanna see some little showboating in the game against Germany especially if the eagles are two or more goals up
I need entertainment grin grin

But #manuknowsbest

Icon4s:

Bulbwa kept Iheanacho on d bench
-during 2013 CAF U17 Qualifiers
-And also during d 2013 CAF U17 Championship
-Iheanacho got his first appearance in d tourney in d 1-0 lose to CIV when he came in as a 2nd half sub for d less than impressive Bulbwa.
-Iheanacho started in d 3rd game against Congo and d sebsequent semi and final game.
-Iheanacho scored 4goals in d 3games he played
-Bulbwa failed d MRI before d FIFA U17 WC and nacho pined down d shirt.
-Fast forward to U20 & Bulbwa is back keeping Iheanacho on d bench during d AYC qualifiers.
-Mancity did nt release Iheanacho for d AYC and Bulbwa pined down d shirt.
-Now dey are both in d team and Bulbwa is benching Iheanacho again.

Does this nt mean dat Bulbwa is more useful to d team dan Iheanacho?

I didn’t miss a sec of the 2013 CAF U-17 championship. It’s true that Bulbwa was benching Iheanacho back then but during that competition Bulbwa was very wasteful in front of goal. No disrespect to Bulbwa’s skills, ability to dribble and run with the ball but the below attributes will make me pick Iheanacho over Bulbwa currently:
- Higher conversion rate in terms of goal scoring which means we can score more of the chances created.
- Sharp eyes for goal
- Forward minded and Less dribbling (mostly interchanging of passes), attack moved faster.
- Combines well with other attackers (Awoniyi's combination with Iheanacho at U.A.E 2013 was like that of siamese twins).

Bulbwa can always come into the game to waste time just like Mikel does for Chelsea.

[b]Déjà vu for spot-kick specialist Steffen

“I knew he would save it!”

It takes a huge amount of confidence for a coach to be sure that his goalkeeper will palm a penalty away in the 83rd minute of a Round of 16 match at a global finals with the score at 1-0, but that is exactly the level of trust Zackary Steffen has earned from Tab Ramos. The game could easily have tipped at that point, the momentum shifting entirely in the other team’s favour. What’s more, the Colombians played out the remaining minutes with a one-man advantage after Kellyn Perry-Acosta received his second yellow card for the foul that led to the spot-kick. But Steffen was ready: “I had a really good feeling before the penalty,” said the match-winner modestly.

Steffen stood motionless for a long time on his line, not moving a muscle until he made himself big and opted to dive for the right-hand corner – which proved to be the right corner in every respect. “I tried to stay still for as long as possible, to give the striker nothing to work with and give him no idea which corner I was going to pick,” the USA custodian explained. “I also tried to look the kicker in the eye in an attempt to irritate him or perhaps give him something to think about.”

The American coach has every reason to place such deep trust in his goalkeeper. The save ‘Zack’ pulled off against Colombia is a repeat of the one he made in a FIFA U-20 World Cup qualifier at the end of January. In the crucial match against El Salvador, with the score also 1-0 to the USA, Steffen revealed his talent as a spot-kick specialist and secured his country’s place at the World Cup finals. “I really don’t like those situations much," he told FIFA.com. "And it’s frustrating for me when we practise penalties in training because the ball usually just whistles past my ear.”

I think they’re an opponent on our level and a side we don’t have to hide from.

Zackary Steffen, USA goalkeeper on quarter-final opponents Serbia.

Last year, Steffen's idol Tim Howard had a fabulous game against Belgium at the FIFA World Cup™, making an incredible 15 saves and setting a new competition record in the process. Thanks to Steffen, those memories came flooding back for the USA fans. The Cafeteros fired a full 24 shots towards goal, but none of them managed to beat the 1.92m keeper. Whether the Colombians tried to beat him with a long-range effort or a one-on-one, Steffen always had the answer.

“They really warmed me up during the course of the match,” the Freiburg man said. “For a goalkeeper, it’s nice when you get that much to do. Of course I like it when my team-mates can help out in that area, as they ultimately do most of the work,” he concluded, giving a hint of his status as a strong team player.

The 20-year-old previously gathered experience at a U-20 World Cup in Turkey two years ago, albeit as third-choice goalkeeper, but the tournament was over for the Stars and Stripes after the group stage. Things are looking very different now. “We’re really being very cautious,” said Steffen. “We’re now focusing on Serbia and will be ready for that game. I think they’re an opponent on our level and a side we don’t have to hide from.”

One thing is certain: if the USA get into another penalty shootout, they will be in safe hands. Steffen will have no objections in finding himself at the bottom of another pile of grateful team-mates, just as he was at the end of the Colombia game. After all, as he said: “Our main objective now is to make it all the way to the final.”

Allnigeriasoccer. com understands that for the third straight game, Nigeria Under 20s coach Manu Garba will field the the same starting lineup at the ongoing Fifa Under 20 World Cup. It means the so - called marquee players Isaac Success, Kelechi Iheanacho, Musa Yahaya and Moses Simon have not been included in the starting XI for the round of 16 clash against Germany Despite returning to full training , coach Manu Garba has elected not to name Ifeanyi Matthew in his starting line-up but there is a spot reserved for skipper Musa Mohammed, who had health concerns earlier this week. Joshua Enaholo will start in goal while Ndidi, Bello and Abdullahi will act as his shield in addition to right - back Mohammed. The trio of Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, Kingsley Sokari and Akinjide Idowu have formed a good understanding in midfield and have retained their spots. Godwin Saviour and Bernard Bulbwa will flank Taiwo Awoniyi in attack again. Flying Eagles Starting Line-up : Enaholo, Mohammed, Abdullahi, Bello and Ndidi; Sokari, Idowu and Ifeanyi; Bulbwa, Awoniyi and Saviour.

After watching the highlights of the German European triumph on YouTube, one thing actualized into a certainty for me, tomorrow's match is going to be a very difficult one for Nigeria. This German side is a well oiled machine, they play with one mind, and most importantly, they're ruthless. They are very big on wing play, so our our full backs have their respectively jobs cut out for them.

I'm by no means fazed by Germany, and I believe that our boys can beat them convincingly if they take their game to the next level, but they should by on no account allow this Germans to counter attack them at any point in time, cuz, they are very deadly at it.
