15 Death After Saturday Downpour In Ibadan by seunlayi(m): 7:14am On Jun 29, 2014
MONDAY 30TH JULY

IBADAN—FIFTEEN people have so far been drowned in the flood occasioned
by heavy downpour that fell for several hours on Saturday.
While 10 casualties were recorded at Apete area of Oyo State on Saturday,
another five persons including three children of a woman taking refuge in a
C&S church located around Olodo river were said to have been swept away
by the raging flood.
Giving account of how the woman and her children were swept away, a man
identified as Fatai Osuolale, said the church and some buildings were
submerged.
According to him, rescue team were still searching for the bodies of the
victims adding that one body had been found so far.
He added that a car was also seen floating on the flood noting that the
owner escaped unhurt as he was seen after the flood had subsided trying to
remove his car.
Meanwhile, the death of about 10 people at Apete area has triggered street
protests by some irate youth who felt that the slow pace of work on the
main bridge led to the death of the people.
During the protest, the youths vandalized the work station of the contractor
handling the Ijokodo-Apete road and the bridge linking the two communities.
On the casualties recorded at Apete area of the city, hundreds of residents
were seen at the end of the bridge waiting for rescue operation to start.
Some of them were throwing stones and other objects at a combined team
of security agents who were at the Ijokodo end of the road to maintain
order.
Bassey Etum, one of the security men employed by the construction
company said that he had to run into the bush to escape being lynched.
He said, “After the river had overflown its banks, residents at the
community said people drowned because of the bridge that collapsed. They
vented their anger on the company and destroyed our machines and
equipment. They stole computers and other office equipment too. There were
six security men here when they came last night (Saturday night). They
wanted to lynch us so we ran into a nearby forest. When we returned around
11pm, the whole place had been vandalized.”
Tunde Emiola, said “the rain started in the afternoon but by 6.30pm the
bridge was submerged. I was among the crowd at the Apete end of the river
bank. We saw people trying to make use of the bridge and warned them but
they were desperate to reach home before it was too dark. Suddenly, the
wooden pillars holding the bridge collapsed and people fell into the river. The
current was too much so there was little hope for survival. We rescued two
people but more than 10 others drowned. I was there and saw it all till very
late. The youths were really angry at the number of deaths.”
Since the bridge linking Ijokodo community and Apete, Ajibode, Arula,
Awotan, Olomo and other communities collapsed during the August 26, 2011
flood disaster, construction work on it has been going on at a snail speed.
The Caretaker Chairman of Ido Local Government, Prof. Joseph Olowofela,
who described the incident as unfortunate explained that it was the volume
of the flood that thwarted the effort of the council to erect a stronger
make-shift bridge there.
He said, “I was here on Friday with the contractor that was to erect the
bridge. But we realised that the volume of the water was too much so we
decided to wait for it to come down. Unfortunately, heavier rain fell on
Saturday which swept away the existing one. We are hearing lots of stories
about the incident but we are yet to ascertain how many people were
actually involved. Those who were rescued have been taken to a hospital.
“We have a large number of people here so we will go ahead and construct
the bridge. Whatever we do is a palliative measure because the state
government through a contractor is already working on a standard bridge
that will be completed before the end of this year.”

meanwhile, Seventy-two hours after the drowning of unspecified number of people
on the make -shift bridge at Apete , the state government on Tuesday
adduced reasons for the delay in completing the main bridge which was
washed away on August 12 , 2011 .
The bridge collapsed after a downpour.
The government ascribed the delay in completing the bridge to the
climatic conditions of 2013 as well as other factors like design revisions
and alterations of the project.
It however promised to complete the reconstruction of another
pedestrian bridge to replace the collapsed one within the next 10 days .
The government urged the residents to make use of the alternative
routes at Ajibode and Akufo areas, pending the completion of the
pedestrian bridge.
It equally assured that the main bridge under construction would be
made passable to motorists by September this year.
The Secretary to the State Government, Ismail Olalekan Alli, disclosed
these Tuesday at a joint press conference held at the Governor ’s
Office, Ibadan , where he described as unfortunate the collapse of the
pedestrian bridge owing to the flooding from the downpour of last
Saturday.

COURTESY was thrown to the wind Thursday as commercial motorcyclists at
Ajibode area blocked the only accessible road to protest the death of two
persons including an okada rider.
Ajibode is on the outskirts of Apete in Ido Local Government area where
flood wrecked havoc last week Saturday.
The two persons were reported dead when a sport utility vehicle ran into
them while on okada.
The road is the only road left for the residents of the area to use since the
collapse of the make-shift bridge during the heavy downpour which
reportedly killed many people.
Vanguard gathered that SUV sped off and escaped after crushing the okada
rider and his passenger.
The incident angered the Okada riders, who prevented other road users from
using the road.
As a result of the gridlock, several civil servants, lecturers and workers of
the University of Ibadan were stranded at bus stops.
Many resorted to trekking after waiting endlessly at bus stops for vehicles.
One of the people, Idris Lawal, who lamented said he had to choose the
Ologuneru longer route to get to his office.
Owing to the commotion, there was hike in fares as okada riders plying
Eleyele road which was N70 now charged N250.
When Vanguard contacted the state police command, the Public Relations
Officer, SP Olabisi Okuwobi Ilobanafor said she would get through to Ojoo
police station to get details.
Meanwhile, Governor Abiola Ajimobi has told the opposition parties in the
state to stop politicizing the collapsed pedestrian bridge at Apete Area of
Ibadan.
The governor, who gave the warning while briefing newsmen shortly after
inspecting the collapsed pedestrian bridge as well as the main bridge still
under construction, told politicians, particularly those from opposition
parties, to desist from playing politics with human lives which, he said, were
sacred.
“The politics we are playing in Oyo State today is politics of development. If
you want to contest for any political office, come out and tell people what
you have done before which qualifies you for the office you are running
for. Show the people your credentials.
“It is unfortunate that some politicians, who have nothing to offer the
people other than character assassination and name calling, have been
visiting this bridge, politicizing human lives which are sacred. Let me tell
them that the good people of Oyo State are now more politically
sophisticated and they can understand their antics,’’ he said.
Governor Ajimobi particularly berated members of a certain political party
who, he said, had been tampering with the pedestrian bridge under the guise
of showing concern, a situation which he said had affected its foundation.
“They are not engineers and so, they are not qualified to tamper with the
bridge under the guise of fixing it. We don’t want anyone to politicize human
lives or the good works that our government is doing.
“We are for politics of development and not the pedestrian politics or politics
of destruction, rumour and innuendoes which they are playing. We are not in
the jungle. This government will not allow it,’’ he said.
The governor thus directed the contractor handling the bridge to ensure
that a temporary pedestrian bridge was put in place latest by this week-end,
and that the main bridge should be completed befor

Imagine for a second that all the dirt collected in Ibadan had been dumped into the streams and gutters as it used to be, what do you think would have happened?

Some of you guys don't think properly, before Ajimobi came on, what bridge was at apete? Or is apete a new area abi the water just start to dey flow pass the place?

If the man had not dredged the waterways you would have known the true definition of flood. Shioor

There's no sense in what you have written here. Are you telling us all the bridges in your state have been built within the past four years? Apply some sense, will you?

Then again, your state receive so much money you should be ashamed of how terrible it still is.
Re: 15 Death After Saturday Downpour In Ibadan by makeitplain: 1:00am On Jul 04, 2014
Why would anyone want to defend this failure, a govt that failed to build a mere drainage bridge (not an overhead bridge) in 4 years? When Ajimobi himself couldn't find any excuse other than that non construction of the bridge was due to climatic conditions. Unfavourable climatic condition Year 1, Year 2, Year 3... Come on now!!! Mr Governor, how come the same climatic condition did not hinder the construction of Mokola bridge? Which was completed in no time?

As far as Apete is concerned, its a fatal failure and if anyone wants to know how bad it is, check his official facebook page or better still oyo state government facebook, things are not looking good for the gap-toothed dude at all, his popularity has nosedived given the reaction of aggrieved groups here and there.

But whatever he is planning to do, its too late though, bye bye 2nd term

The problem of this government is misplaced priority. They are not interested in any project that is not marketable for their propaganda no matter how much it will benefit the people. That's why they will rather sink boreholes running to billions of naira just to water flowers and flaunt it on T.V to show how performing they are than to sink same for human use.

That bridge does not fall within his propaganda projects as a result, the Governor is simply not interested. Now that they need votes after seeing what happened in Ekiti, they are now desperately promising completion of the bridge in September. Just like Aregbe in Osun is desperately begging the victims of his demolition to come and collect their compensation. So if Fayemi did not lose in Ekiti they wont feel the need to pay ppl whose houses are pulled down 3-4 years ago.

But its too late now... its just too late for them, just like it was too late for Fayemi. Election is already here

Permit me to state that u are an ìdiôt and as dumb as buffoons come. Sometimes it is better to keep quiet than to come out and be announcing your foolishness to the world.
You obviously know nothing about the said area but you are here running your stinking mouth like a mad goat in defence of ur APC paymasters. There was a bridge there as at 2011. Part of the bridge got destroyed because of a flood that occurred August the same 2011 when the governor was still fresh in office. Ajumobi decided that instead of completing the less than 20 metres bridge at the time, he would find a way to stall the construction and use it for 2015 thus leading to loss of life and hardship for the people of the area during the time of rain like this.
Just in case u didn't read the foregoing well THE BRIDGE IS LESS THAN 20 METRES!!! Casually taking about 20 steps will get u across.
This is what django1 the unchained goat who "thinks" properly will have us believe is not Ajumobi's fault but the Ibadan peoples'. APC e-goats living in a bubble grin
